Stopped in after having dinner just down the street. A small older little restaurant. We sat at the bar. The bartender was very friendly. Great conversation. We had some raw oysters. They were very good. Great place to stop for a quick cocktail.

“Overpriced, dumpy decor, poor service.”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

Please, don't make the same mistake we did. Don't go here.

This is the first place we ate in the state of Maine. We were starving after a 7 hour drive and chose it for the sake of ease since Kennebunk was packed with people. We were seated immediately, which was nice, but that was the only nice thing about this place. The chairs were metal, like something you'd see on someone's back porch. There are sheets of construction paper hanging everywhere with handwritten sentiments on them such as "Ari Fleisher loved the blueberry pie", and "so-and-so loved the clambake", all written in marker. These were all over the place. Makes you wonder why they feel the need to do this...

The food is mediocre at best. I had the shrimp platter- they were basically salad sized shrimp fried and dumped over a pile of french fries- for $15! My husband had the fried haddock (again, on top of a pile of fries)- it was mushy and had a funny taste to it, and his was $18... way overpriced. Our waitress asked if we would like to try the blueberry pie- we figured we'd try it since supposedly it was served on Air Force One (according to one of the things on wall). We got the pie, and it was in this tiny bowl with a small scoop of ice cream on top. It was okay, but the pie wasn't even warm. We got the bill and I looked it over... they charge $7 for the pie! Ridiculous in my opinion. Our waitress seemed nervous the whole time, and acted like she didn't quite know what she was doing. She didn't even formally ask us what we'd like to drink; she just stood there and waited for us to speak up.

“Overpriced dump, bad service, decent food....”

We stopped here for a late lunch and it was pretty crowded for 1:30 pm. You walk in and you can tell it has been there forever and it is one of those "you gotta stop by" places everyone knows about when visiting Kennebunk. With all the Presidential and other political stuff on the walls you can tell this must be "the place" to stop when in Kennebunk for a meal. While waiting for only a few minutes for out table I made a pit stop in the bathroom. not the worst i have been in, but it was pretty rough. The main inside dining area has a mix of cafeteria style tables/chairs and outdoor table and chairs, while the floor has a bunch of food scraps all over the place. The ceiling is stained drop ceiling, with some tiles just missing and left exposed. We got the lobster rolls, which on the menu are offered at "market price." Well, the market price must be in the gold standard because the lobster roll was $18, which is 15/16 bucks even in the touristy areas of the Northeast (Maine/RI/etc...). Being on a dock and this years lobster is a bumper crop we all know lobsters are 3-5 dollars a pound, so I expected $12-$15 bucks tops, not $18. The food was good (nothing mind-blowing)...the lobster roll was good and the clam chowder was very good. An older lady made a big announcement that the "blueberry pie just came out of the oven." My wife ordered a slice...it was good pie, full of blueberries, served with ice cream, but it was cold pie...certainly not out of the oven recently. The service was terrible as there were more than enough staff, just standing around, but after receiving our food we never saw our waitress again. When we were ready to leave I stood by the cash register and one of the waitstaff asked to check us out, I asked for our check as our waitress was missing since serving the food...I told the guy helping me and he seemed unfazed and as if complaints about the service is not a new thing. It was decent to good food, but I would skip this place as better are in the area. Plus, the owners should clean up the place.

“Great Food-Great Service”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

After Driving 8 hours from Bucks County Pa. we arrived at our favorite lobster roll restaurant. we have tried many places for lobster roll and none compare to Bartley's. As we entered we were met by Brian and for the fourth October in a row we felt like seeing an old friend again. we were seated at our favorite table and our server Jamie Hafford was amazing, the service was excellent and we made another Maine friend. We have yet to time the fall foliage correctly but we always get the lobster roll right,we start with outstanding clam chowder and finnish with the to die for blueberry pie and ice cream.we always take a picture to remind us to find the time to make a return trip.10/12/2012
