“Wonderful summer vacation home near Cascais!!”
Reviewed August 22, 2013 via mobile

Morada do Sol was the perfect vacation home for our 3 weeks in Portugal. We had 18 people there for part of the time and as few as 6. Easy to get to and from the airport in Lisbon since is is only about 3 miles from the auto Estrada. The house is completely secluded with beautiful gardens. The owner, Marcella, was so nice, helpful and easy to work with. We all thought the house was really functional and the large outdoor table was terrific. We used it almost every day for breakfast or lunch as well as for a couple of dinners. It is close to several beaches and to Cascais and Azoia which gives you easy access to some really good Portuguese restaurants. Lastly, it has a terrific enclosed swimming pool. It can be opened on the sides or kept closed if it is too windy. This kept the pool water much warmer than was the case with other pools we have rented in this area - average poop temperature of 83 degrees!! This was the perfect venue for our two families 40th reunion and we ALL recommend it highly!!!!

We lived in Cascais in 1973/4 and have been back to the area frequently

We have stayed in villas in the area many times with our American friends

Morada do Sol was chosen this year as our two extended families totalling 18 people were sharing, including, for the first time three young grandchildren. We needed a safe child proof home but also one where the grandparents didn't have stair climbing problems.

We were absolutely delighted with the choice.

Malveira da Serra is a small village on a main road into Cascais and Sintra, and although lacking restaurants it had more than adequate local stores, bread shop, coffee bars and Pizza places. The people were extremely friendly.

Morada do Sol was a short walk into the village. We felt secure behind a buzzer contolled gate with a long entrance drive

The house was everything we needed with furniture and kitchenware that was practical rather than expensive, which would have been a problem with young children.

The outdoor covered eating area with a huge marble table was perfect for lunches

The pool was a great hit as it was fully covered with an option to use large sliding doors to ventilate. As a result the water was warm and very inviting. Unlike the previous reviewer Ithought it was absolutely clear from all the blurb that this was a shared facility - this was not a problem

We found ourselves perfectly situated for drives to tourist resorts, restaurants and beaches.

I would go again in a heartbeat

Thank you for taking the time to review Morada do Sol and we are delighted that your stay was a success with all generations!

We often find that the younger ones simply do not want to leave the estate during their stay as there are so many things for them to enjoy, including the ball games area, swings, gardens and of course the pool.

I am glad you also enjoyed the massages and we hope to see you soon again.

Looking at the pictures on their website we were really looking forward to it as it looked beautiful however the pictures were very deceiving. The house itself was very dirty, there were a lot of stains on the glasses/cutlery. The swimming pool is shared, which wasn't clear to us as we thought we had rented the whole thing, so something to watch out for even though it wasn't much of a problem. The inside of the house was ok, but not what we were expecting. We had rented the big house and the downstairs "studio". The bathroom in the studio was quite dirty and gave off a horrible stench whenever we used the shower or the faucet. However, when the weather was nice, it was lovely to be able to sit in the big garden and have breakfast on the outside table. For us, the house was fine, because we were away most of the day but I don't recommend it if you're not planning to spend the entire day elsewhere. The location was nice and close to Cascais and some amazing beaches.

Thank you for taking the time to review Morada do Sol. We value our clients’ opinions and are sorry you were disappointed. We are so used to getting wonderful reviews that we were taken aback by your comments and investigated what had happened.

It is very clearly stated in the website that the pool is only private if you rent the whole estate (up to 30 people). We realise that in a big party not everyone will have read the site when the booking is made and so may have different expectations. Every house has its own outside private space which guests truly enjoy.

We apologise that the house was not as clean as it should have been. We had a large group checkout the day of your arrival and the head housekeeper's mother had died two days earlier, so she had delegated supervision of the cleaning to one of her staff. The circumstances are unusual, and thanks to your comment we shall on future such occasions directly supervise the clean ourselves. It is a shame you did not let us know as this could have been remedied immediately.

With regards to the smell on using the bathroom downstairs, clearly some blockage occurred during your stay, which was picked up on your departure and quickly resolved.

It is a shame that you did not draw these problems to our attention during your stay as they could have been solved the same day. We are on call seven days a week by phone, email and in person locally, and the handy-man Joaquim was at the property on several occasions and spoke to members of your party and helped with other requests. Unfortunately, none of them drew the problems to his or our attention. This is a shame, as you would then have enjoyed all aspects of your stay as so many other guests have done.

Having been to Portugal a few times, this has to rank as one of my best experiences there. Morada do Sol is a great place to get away and relax, whilst the covered pool and ball court meant there was always something to do outdoors. The 5 minute walk into Malveira da Serra ensures that unlike with other remote retreats, you are not cut off from the world. The staff at Sol Domus were incredibly polite and helpful, they even set up surf rental for me at the amazing Guincho beach (conveniently only a 10 minute drive away). All in all a great experience, and I would highly recommend Morada do Sol to anyone, whether travelling as a family or as a group of friends. My only regret was not getting organised and getting a bigger group of us out there!

I stayed there with family and friends at the end of August and we had an excellent time. In fact, I was getting married in Cascais and the estate was perfect as we were all able to stay within the same complex. The agency was great to deal with, and no request was too difficult for them. The house was very well kept and spacious. Although, it is a drive to Cascais it is easy to get a bus or even a taxi and there is a small town within walking distance with everything you would need. The outside area was very well maintained and it was fantastic to have a private pool, barbecue and outside eating area. Also, they organised outside caterers for us on one of the nights and the serivce and food was amazing. Overall, I would highly recommend Morada de Sol and we are all still hoping to return, perhaps for our wedding anniversary!

What a beautiful place to stay in Sintra region! We rented the whole complex for a week as we were getting married in Estoril and we had the most amazing time ever. Relaxing, friendly, peaceful - just perfect!

Very close to Sintra, Cascais and Lisbon so perfect for holidays with a bit of sightseeing!

Special thanks to the staff that keeps this place up and running! You are doing a really great job!

All best!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Morada do Sol is a large, enclosed property to let on a short term basis, in a rural setting near Cascais, Portugal, at the foot of the Sintra hills, 3 km from Guincho beach. This is an ideal location for nature lovers, being in the Sintra-Cascais protected National Park where building is very restricted. Lisbon and its airport are 30 minutes away. With a large swimming pool and beautiful grounds in a 5000m2 estate, close to the beach and the many attractions of Cascais, Lisbon and Sintra, Morada do Sol offers an ideal setting for a perfect holiday: peace and privacy amongst the beauty and tranquility of nature but with all you might want close by. The large, covered pool means the water is warm enough for you to swim from April to November although you are free to use it all year round; sliding doors allow you to catch a cooling breeze in the summer months. The extensive and well-kept gardens with their grand pine tree drive and many areas and spaces of different character have wonderful displays of colour for most of the year and the mature palm trees provide delightful summer shade. Help yourself to fresh tomatoes, lettuces, apples, pears, lemons, oranges, figs and pomegranates from the orchard and vegetable garden, all biologically produced. In winter, relax by a log fire and contemplate the view down a green and unspoilt valley to the sea, or the mystical Sintra hills behind. Enjoy the outdoor games area and sauna all year round. Morada do Sol has two villas in its grounds which can be let as 4 independent units. All units have their own private access and outside space. ... more   less
