“Highlight of our trip”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

I can't say enough about this tour and Young's Guide Service!

August can be pretty tough to see moose, especially in the rain, with the threat of a lightening storm. Chris (the owner and our guide) was extremely up front about that - not wanting to disappoint our group that drove three hours just to get to Greenville for the safari. The storms were headed right towards the location the canoes are kept, so we stayed in the truck and took our safari on wheels rather than water.

We first saw a bull swimming in the middle of the lake and watched him as he approached shore, shook off the water and headed into the woods. Chris showcased his expert calling skills and got the bull to look back and head a few steps in our direction. Our second encounter surprised even Chris! We came across a young cow in the woods and were able to watch her run off into a more dense part of the area. It was certainly video-worthy!

Our group took to calling Chris "The Moose Hunter" (a la Steve "Croc Hunter" Irwin). He was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the area and the moose than we would have had a great time even if we hadn't seen a single one. It was definitely worth the long drive. I can't wait to schedule another safari!

“Fishing and moose safari”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

Chris guided my wife and I for a morning of fishing and an evening moose safari. Before we booked Chris made sure he called and talked to us so he could design the right trip for our needs. We found Chris to be extremely knowledgeable and professional and a heck of a nice guy. We caught a whole mess of fish. The moose were a little tough to find that evening, but we did still see one. We also got to see some wonderful parts of the Maine woods we otherwise would not have. Overall both experiences were great thanks to Chris. He really knows his stuff. Finally, it doesn’t have much to do with guiding—but he made a restaurant recommendation that turned out to be delicious.

“Moose Safari w/ Chris Young!!!”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

We went on a moose safari we Chris Young on the morning of July 5, 2013, and it was the highlight of our trip to the Moosehead Lake area. Chris knows exactly where to find the moose! Chris gave us a choice to go out on a canoe or go with him in his pickup truck. We opted to go in the truck, which permitted us to check several locations for moose. We saw 5 moose, including 3 bull moose feeding in the same lake which is a rarity! We walked down a path to the lake which was obviously a moose path because it had numerous fresh moose tracks! Chris won the 2013 National Moose Calling Championship, and demo'd this skill for us. Chris was extremely informative and all we learned a lot from him. He gave us a great recommendation for a dinner destination, and also gave us great advice as to where to drive to see moose, which we did on both counts. We also enjoyed meeting Chris personally. He operates with the highest level of integrity. He told us he is very inspired by Proverbs 22:1 and he tries to live his life this way: "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold." We are hoping to go back up there and go out on a canoe the next time, and we are also hoping to go up during bird hunting season since we have bird dogs and Chris is also a guide for bird hunts and nature safaris. Thank you, Chris, for a great time!

“Moose Galore.....I wish I had a better camera!”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

Four of us (me, my husband, my brother and his wife) went on this safari while staying on Moosehead Lake. My brother picked this safari due to (1) the previous reviews (2) the simple, informative website and (3) Young's Guide Service offering private tours. Our guide Chris Young (the owner/operator) promptly picked us up at 5am for our much anticipated morning Moose Safari. While we rode in his truck to the pond, we saw 2 moose along the way on Lily Bay Road. At the pond, we quietly got into 2 canoes and begin our "hunt" for moose. The pond was like glass, and provided an amazing backdrop in our moose quest. In all we saw 5 moose on the pond (as well as a few way off in the distance) as well as several loons.

Now mind you, we did not just "see" the moose...we watched the moose for quite some time. Chris was sure to get close enough...yet stay an appropriate distance that was not intrusive. This allowed the moose to go about their morning routine, without being scared off by us.

If you are looking for a peaceful, tranquil experience, this is the one!

....and be sure to have a good camera!

“The Moose Whisperer”
Reviewed July 17, 2013

My wife and I were planning a week stay in Jackman, Maine (an hour drive from Greenville) in Mid-June. So, weeks before I went on Trip Advisor and found Chris Young's Moose Safaris as "THE" thing to do up in that area. I called him and formed an immediate bond with him. We had so much in common. We met him for an 3-Hour evening safari...Jumped in his very comfy pickup truck and headed out towards a lake he commonly takes his clients to. On the way, we saw a large moose cow and stopped for a few minutes to watch her. Also, we saw a great deal of other local wildlife along the way. Upon arriving at the lake, we jumped into a canoe and saw two large bull moose across the lake feeding together...Apparently, a rarity! They were up to their backs out in the water. Their heads would disappear every so often as they fed on underwater plants. We got some great pics of them as Chris skillfully got us over nearer to them. Finally, we moved around the bend and spotted several more moose feeding as well. In addition, we spotted a nesting female loon and got some fantastic pics of her. On the way back to our launch site, we also saw a beaver out feeding. On the way back to Greenville, we spotted several more moose including a cow and her calf. Chris is an exceptionally personable young man who is a consummate professional. He knows his business well. In fact, five days after guiding us he went on to win the "National Moose Calling Championships" over several other worthy competitors. So, he truly deserves the title of "THE MOOSE WHISPERER." Chris, my wife and I formed quite a bond that night as we shared about faith, life and our love for God's creation. As a result, I think we will be lifelong friends. In fact, he and his wife are going to possibly come down to Ohio in the off-season for a deer hunting trip and will hopefully speak at our church. As a pastor of a church with an Outdoor Ministry, I found Chris's humble, more personal approach (as opposed to the bigger outfitters up there) to be just the ticket. Our evening with him was the ultimate highlight of the trip. Seeing the moose was great, but spending time with him was the cherry on top of the cake. We ended up seeing 12 moose with Chris. That was the most moose any of his clients have seen all season on one safari. But to top it off, on our hour-long drive back home in the dark on the mostly deserted road between Greenville and Jackman, we saw 14 more moose (Including a huge Bull that ran right out in front of our car...A Cow with twin calves standing out in the middle of the road...And two other large cows standing in the middle of the road...As well as our 2nd fox of the evening). WOW! 26 moose in one night. Not too shabby! Folks, if you want to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience at a very reasonable price....Go to Greenville, Maine and have Chris Young take you out to experience Maine the way it should be seen! Kudos to the Moose Whisperer!!!!
