“Beautiful Maine at a Wonderful B&B”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2013

This is a "must go!" The Mooring B&B is wonderful! The ocean view is to die for! The rooms are beautiful and comfortable! The breakfast is delicious! We love staying at B&B's and Penny has created the one of the best we have ever been to. AND, the location is wonderful! Georgetown is an out of the way small community BUT Five Islands lobster at the end of the road will definitely be on you way to a great lobster dinner!

Jen and I just spent 4 days at Penny's this month where we have visited faithfully once or twice a year for maybe six years or so? She never disappoints with her fantastic breakfasts and wonderful accommodations. We typically stay in the room on the first floor with its private balcony and it has been our "home away from home". My wife and I love the ocean and you can't find a better place on the Maine coast to hear the waves and see the sunrises each morning. The guests we have met there have always been very interesting - this visit they ranged from Michigan to Florida to Australia! If you are interested in a great relaxing place to stay with beautiful views, great breakfasts (and did I mention those blueberry muffins?) make arrangements today to make it your next vacation spot. It's like they say about potato chips, "you can't eat just one". If you stay and the Mooring you will be back again and again and again!

Room Tip: All of the rooms are great!

I couldn't have asked for more. The owner Penny Barabe promptly answered all questions and was very easy to work with. The food was amazing, my friends are still raving about it a month later. The view/setting was unmatched. And most importantly, our families got to hang out all weekend at the house as if it were our own. My two-year-old niece even said "I live here. This is my home now!" It definitely felt homey. And a special thanks to the caretaker/cook Margaret who kept me company on the early hours of my wedding morning, while no one else was up and she was making blueberry muffins! We've talked to couples who go back there every year and now we will too.

Room Tip: The room downstairs has a private balcony overlooking the ocean. But all rooms have ocean views and...

We chose The Mooring to view the 8/31/12 blue moon, which decided to hide, but in all other respects a perfect spot on the wild Maine coast south of Bath. Former home of the Walter Reid who donated the land for the nearby state park of the same name, The Mooring was lovingly updated and is run by his granddaughter, Penny. Original 1900's pine floors, old garden, family photos and memorabilia everywhere, adding to the homey atomsphere.

Those at the delicious breakfast, were we met both repeaters and like us, a family new to this B&B. Penny prepared a lovely and tasty meal & was to cater for 50 a lobster fest that night-a wedding rehearsal dinner.

My research promised cookie jar always stocked, and both the peanut butter and choc. chip were homemade & delicious.

My husband and I stayed at The Mooring to celebrate our one-year wedding anniversary for a few days in late July. The property is beautiful and incredibly remote, which was just what we were looking for. We had a nice private deck off of our room which we used quite a bit and was also a great spot to hang wet beach clothes. We are pretty private people, and never felt like the staff was watching our every move or checking up on us. Reid State Park is about a 2 minute drive down the street, and we spent a few days there. It is basically deserted during the week, and the beach is beautiful. If we were to return to this area, I would definitely stay at The Mooring again. Also, it's worth mentioning that the breakfast is FABULOUS and there are always fresh muffins in the kitchen. We also enjoyed a nice spread of cheese/fruit with wine one evening before dinner. Well worth it!

The Mooring B&B in Georgetown was exactly what I was looking for in a weekend with my girlfriend: ocean-front, quiet, gorgeous house, amazing and considerate service, and close (but not too close) to Portland.

Penny, the innkeeper, runs a B&B the way it should be, with fantastic amenities and a light touch. I'd go again the next time I'm in Maine and recommend everybody to do the same.

FOOD
Breakfast is homemade, plentiful but light, and delicious. It seemed to alternate sweet one day, savory the next. The dishes and premade items (bread, cereal, oatmeal, etc.) are left out to pick up and dine at leisure. There's no formal sit down and serving, which is a bit stuffy. Penny was very accommodating to our vegetarian requests.

Throughout the day and night, cookies, muffins, fruit and other snacks are left out in the kitchen. In the afternoon, Penny sets out a cheese platter with some wine. There's also a fridge filled with water, soda, and beer for guests -- a VERY nice touch.

ROOMS
The rooms are comfortable, clean, and quiet. They all have east-facing ocean views, which are spectacular in the morning. It gets incredibly bright in the morning (there are shades). The bed is comfy, there are extra pillows and blankets throughout. The bathroom is very clean and includes some toiletries.

In our room was a beach bag with towels, meant for use at nearby Reid park or any of the beaches (highly recommend Popham). Again, an unexpected and considerate extra.

HOUSE
This is a beautiful and large house. Besides the rooms, guests are given mostly free reign over the dining room, family room (Spanish room) with games and a tv, several sitting areas, and a very large porch with tables for breakfast and lounging. We never felt like we were intruding or in a museum where we couldn't touch anything (like some B&Bs).

The lawn behind the house stretches to the water. Sadly, there is no direct water access without scaling a mini cliff. They are set up for weddings, and host them frequently, so there are areas for a ceremony with a nice lattice overhang, and a reception. We could've spent all day hanging out on the lawn.

AREA
We were very close to Reid State Park (about 30 min drive) which offered some beaches and light hiking. Very close to Five Islands Lobster and a few general and farm stores. About 30 min from Bath, closest "city" and the only way to bounce to other islands or areas. About an hour from Portland. Most importantly, this is a quiet, middle-of-the-woods area - not touristy at all.

Room Tip: All rooms have ocean views and privacy. The ground floor (Reid) room has a private porch area.

My friend and I just got back from a one-night stay at The Mooring on Georgetown Island on our way home from Camden. It's a gorgeous location and a perfect place for an ocean-front wedding, which appears to be one of its draws. The driveway leading to the house is lined with white hydrangea trees and the gardens are filled with flowers and aquatic plants. Spacious deck in the back with tables and umbrellas. Our 2nd-floor room was large, comfortable and beautifully decorated (every guest room has a theme AND an ocean view) and we fell asleep to the sound of the waves crashing on the rocky shore below.

Penny is the perfect hostess -- she had a bottle of wine and two glasses waiting for us when we arrived and a list of local restaurant menus for us to peruse. She's friendly, professional and doesn't hover. Breakfast was MUCH better than I've come to expect at most B&Bs -- piping hot, delicious French toast with bacon, blueberry muffins and fresh fruit salad. Fabulous coffee.

Penny's 9-year old grandson gave us a tour of the grounds and provided a bit of history as well (he's the great, great, great grandson of Walter Reid, the donor of spectacularly pretty Reid State Park, just down the road from the inn.)

Unfortunately, The Mooring's website doesn't begin to do justice to the lovely house, gardens and ocean views. It's a shame, because The Mooring is a great getaway, not too expensive and close to both Bath and Portland if you're in the area.
