This is easily the most popular area trail, both with hikers and bicyclists. It was started in the early 2000s in spite of newspaper opposition from the Kennebec Journal and has remained frequently used, particularly in warmer weather. The trail now stretches from downtown Augusta to downtown Gardiner on the west bank of the Kennebec. Much of the trail is paved in asphalt, but some portions--such as the portions in Hallowell just south of the Augusta border--are crushed rock. The trail offers great views of the river and benches on which to rest. My wife and I have sen a variety of wildlife there, ranging from beavers swimming in the river to porcupines climbing trees. Ample parking is available at the trail head in downtown Augusta near the Maine State Housing Authority, as well as at a spur off the main trail near the YMCA.
