Description: Gritty McDuff's, Maine's Original Brew Pub specializes in hand-crafted English style ales and traditional and creative pub fare, in a friendly and fun atmosphere. Both Gritty's fine ales and the pubs have won countless "best of" awards through our twenty-six years of operation. Our standard brews are session beers, Gritty's Pub-Style Pale Ale, McDuff's Best Bitter, Black Fly Stout, allowing one to have multiple beers within a reasonable time period without overwhelming the senses. Our seasonal and varietal ale offerings are more adventurous, some with a higher ABV, and some with higher IBU. We brew a beer for all craft brew palates. For the diner, we offer traditional pub fare alongside not so traditional specialty items. Our pub-style long tables with benches easily accommodate parties of all sizes and add to the camaraderie.

“Excessive Noise Undercuts Good Food Experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2013

We stopped in for supper on a recent Saturday night. They told us there would be a ten minute wait for a table and their time estimate was spot-on. We ended up sitting at one of the longer table-and-benches in the bar area, ultimately sharing the table with another couple seated at the far end from us -- something Gritty's staff had cautioned us about when we were seated. We could have had a table of our own but it would have required a longer wait.

While they warned us about the "family-style" seating, they didn't prepare us for the volume of the upbeat, modern music in the bar area. We had no problem with the music format -- we like almost everything; but the volume was another issue. There was absolutely no chance any conversation we might have could be heard by anyone else -- we had to literally yell our orders so that our server could hear them. The only reason we could fathom for it needing to be that lound was that the regular Gritty's staff had already suffered sufficient hearing loss that it had to be excessively loud in order for them to hear it ??

The service itself was friendly and attentive....and the food was good. Our blackened-haddock burrito was nicely flavored -- not spicy simply for the sake of being spicy, but with a nice kick for folks who prefer their spices on the more-moderate side. For those wanting a stronger "kick", the salsa served with the burrito fills that bill nicely. Corn chips and sour cream made nice sides to this comfortably-large meal. The haddock fish-and-chips ordered by another member of our party were good -- the fish described as "especially sweet", but the fries "just average". We opteed for desserts as well -- a harvest-toll-house-square with white chocolate, cranberries and orange zest was excellent although the ice cream that came with it had noticeable ice crystals (yuk!).... the apple-cheddar cobbler had nice-sized apple chunks, but the crust had virtually no cheddar flavor, tasting more like a thickened Bisquick mix; the ice cream with it was fine.

The food, in any other setting, would have garnered a very-good rating for our overall experience -- but any sense of "enjoying" our meal was pushed aside by the bulldozer of sound coming from the sound system. And, for those who would critically ask if we'd requested they turn it down, we've learned from past experience that those kinds of request just fall on deaf ears!

We'll probably go back here again next summer -- when the outdoor seating area is available, but probably won't venture back during the cold weather when the building is buttoned-up-tight to keep the heat -- and the music -- contained.

“Great meal! ”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2013 via mobile

We stopped in for dinner. Everything was delicious! The whole family liked their meal! We had the pulled pork sandwich w/ sweet potato fries, burger, Mac and cheese, and fish and chips. And the beer is good too. I would Definitely recommend this place!

“Great Pub!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2013

We arrived shortly after 9pm and sat in the pub section. The main dining area was closed and we were told that they would be moving to the reduced menu at 9:30pm.

We ordered the pulled pork fries (delicious, with lots of pork) and the half-order nachos, which were also delicious, served with salsa on top. Both of these were plenty of food for the two of us.

The beers were good and the long tables made for a fun atmosphere.

I would recommend and return in the future.

“Glad we went”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 3, 2013

Stopped here for lunch and beer based on a friend's recommendation (and based on our desire to go to as many breweries/brew pubs in Maine as possible on each trip.) Food was decent (lobster roll was pretty good) and some of the beer was good. We got flights. Some were not my favorite. The porter was probably the best. Brown ale was also decent. I would certainly stop here again in Freeport.

“Great Casual Dining”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2013 credit card Amex Card Member Review

The menu has something for everyone. You can stop by for an appetizer and drink or have a full meal. They always have a great selection of beers available. In the summer, you can sit out on the large deck and if you have children with you, they can play in the large fenced in back yard while you are waiting for your meal. Very lay back and fun and the staff is great. We totally enjoy visiting this restaurant when we are in Freeport.
