We stopped in for supper on a recent Saturday night. They told us there would be a ten minute wait for a table and their time estimate was spot-on. We ended up sitting at one of the longer table-and-benches in the bar area, ultimately sharing the table with another couple seated at the far end from us -- something Gritty's staff had cautioned us about when we were seated. We could have had a table of our own but it would have required a longer wait.
While they warned us about the "family-style" seating, they didn't prepare us for the volume of the upbeat, modern music in the bar area. We had no problem with the music format -- we like almost everything; but the volume was another issue. There was absolutely no chance any conversation we might have could be heard by anyone else -- we had to literally yell our orders so that our server could hear them. The only reason we could fathom for it needing to be that lound was that the regular Gritty's staff had already suffered sufficient hearing loss that it had to be excessively loud in order for them to hear it ??
The service itself was friendly and attentive....and the food was good. Our blackened-haddock burrito was nicely flavored -- not spicy simply for the sake of being spicy, but with a nice kick for folks who prefer their spices on the more-moderate side. For those wanting a stronger "kick", the salsa served with the burrito fills that bill nicely. Corn chips and sour cream made nice sides to this comfortably-large meal. The haddock fish-and-chips ordered by another member of our party were good -- the fish described as "especially sweet", but the fries "just average". We opteed for desserts as well -- a harvest-toll-house-square with white chocolate, cranberries and orange zest was excellent although the ice cream that came with it had noticeable ice crystals (yuk!).... the apple-cheddar cobbler had nice-sized apple chunks, but the crust had virtually no cheddar flavor, tasting more like a thickened Bisquick mix; the ice cream with it was fine.
The food, in any other setting, would have garnered a very-good rating for our overall experience -- but any sense of "enjoying" our meal was pushed aside by the bulldozer of sound coming from the sound system. And, for those who would critically ask if we'd requested they turn it down, we've learned from past experience that those kinds of request just fall on deaf ears!
We'll probably go back here again next summer -- when the outdoor seating area is available, but probably won't venture back during the cold weather when the building is buttoned-up-tight to keep the heat -- and the music -- contained.
