Recompence Shore Campground at Wolfe's Neck Farm

We stayed with friends for two nights on the west bay site 149, an open, field-ish site near the new bath houses. The site was well maintained but certainly not our first choice because there is no shade. (There weren't many options by the time we were able to make reservations). However, despite that, the new bathhouses were terrific and being close by was helpful, also the little path to the rocks was a nice place to eat our campfire breakfast. We love this campground, and haven't had a bad experience. The west bay has a lot of families that are up early, not an issue except for that one morning we wanted to sleep in after a fun night. We indulged in the Lobster bake, which was terrific and a great value. This is our second time to Recompence, the first time we stayed in middle bay and we loved our wooded site, so we would probably shoot for that area again. Overall, an easy camping trip within close proximity to shopping, entertainment and other creature comforts.

We spent 3 nights in an oceanfront spot 170 I think. The views were beautiful and my daughters enjoyed hanging out down by the water although it was mucky but they liked it. My husband and daughters rented kayaks for the day and enjoyed it. It was nice to wake up and sip my coffee enjoying the beautiful views, in our semi private spot. My kids road their bikes around the camp and to the rest rooms. They also enjoyed the farm area. Our only complaints were it was $50 per night for tent camping which was a bit high and the outhouse two spots away we felt was unusable, no light, pitch black in early evening, wet floor (although no sink or water). The regular bathrooms were cleaner and brighter although there was one shower that didn't work the whole time we were there. I thought the $1 for a shower was ridiculous, my first day my shower was cold no hot water.
We liked that it was so close to Freeport which is a nice town.

Stayed in tent on site #78 for a few days in July and had a wonderful time. The campground is rustic in a very pleasant way and the folks are friendly and considerate. This isn't your ATV or mini water park kind of place, which for many of us is just perfect. The cow pastures are lovely and the kayaking is fun.

This is a clean quiet campground. We stayed 3 nights in a water/hydro hookup site. Wifi access was ok but slow at times. They were cleaning the showers at 8am which seemed like an odd time. The staff is very pleasant.
The view of the water is nice. There isn't much to do if you have children. No beach or playground to speak of that I noticed.

My major complaint of this campground is the poor water pressure and shower facilities. They charge $1 per shower and their is barely enough pressure to get wet. The tempurature fluctuates between hot and cold as people flush toilets or start showers in the other stalls. The water pressure at the site is poor too but I can deal with that.

This is a good campground for a one night stay. The campground is nice but the facilities need an upgrade.

I would not return to this campground due to the poor shower facilities.

Thank you for your feedback! This is really helpful. In the past week we’ve evaluated these issues and installed a brand-new high-efficiency well pump which should remedy all of these water challenges. If you get a chance to come by again, we invite you to visit our West Bay section of the campground, where we have a brand-new shower building, additional shore access and our kids’ playground area. Thanks again!

We stayed in West Bay which has no electricity, but nice water views. We were near an RV who HAD to run his generator everyday from 8-11 and 3-6. Yes, he was following policy, but it was over kill; 3-6 is enough. He should have been placed with the other RV section which has electricity available. Bathrooms were not kept up on cleaning. There is NO beach for kids to play in unless you want them in mud flats once the tide goes out. There is NO security. There is a back way into the campground and people where using the facility who where not registered campers.

Room Tip: If you are tenting only you will have more to choose from in a quieter section of the campground.

Hi Liz!

Thank you for your feedback. In order to have a few oceanfront campsites available to RVers, we do allow limited generator use in West Bay. As we were so full the weekend of your stay, we regret that we were unable to move you to an oceanfront site in our generator-free (tents only) Middle Bay section.

We are pleased to offer four miles of ocean frontage. While it is beautiful to look at, as you point out it is all tidal and the water is best enjoyed during the hours of high tide.

It is surprising that you witnessed no security the night of your stay. Our campground manager was on-duty the night of your stay, and patrolled three times that evening. We closely monitor the campground, and encourage campers to call one of three security phone numbers (posted throughout the campground) if they experience any disturbances once the office is closed.

All restrooms are scheduled for cleaning twice per day, and if campers notice any unclean restrooms we encourage them to notify the office so we can address any issues immediately.
If you noticed vehicles without campsite car passes, they may have been associated with our Community Gardens, our Teen Agriculture program, and canoe and kayak rentals.

Thank you again for your helpful feedback!

We spent two nights in one of the waterfront campsites. Excellent view, for just sitting and watching the tides in Casco Bay, birds, fish jumping. The sites are mostly wooded and shaded, and usually with trees separating the sites. (I hate campgrounds where there's no real boundary between my site and the neighbors). Even though all the waterfront sites were occupied, many with families, it was very quiet. Even though you are 10 minutes from downtown Freeport and the outlets, it's another world.

Some reviewers have criticized the outhouses. They are outhouses, not washrooms; they are going to give off an odor, especially in the heat of summer. I did not find them that bad, and a campground employee came around cleaning them daily. The fresh cut flowers in the washrooms near the office and snack bar were a nice touch.

Room Tip: Definitely fork over the extra money for a waterfront campsite. The RV sites with water/electric ho...

My husband, daughter and our dog stayed here for 5 nights at the end of June. We had spot #98 in the tenting only section. We had a very large area right on the ocean. We were close to the stairs to the beach and the kayak launch ramp as well as the slightly smelly outhouse and water pipe. There is not a lot of trees etc between the sites but everyone was far enough away to still have some privacy. The campground was very clean and quiet. Wolf Neck Farm is part of the campground. So you hear a lot of cow noises :-) Maybe it was early in the season but I was surprised that the little office/store didn't have any produce, milk, eggs or anything for sale from the farm. The campground is right outside of Freeport so going into town is easy. There is a very nice market right before arriving at Recompence that had everything you could need so didn't have to go all the way into Freeport to stock up. All in all a very nice place in a beautiful location.
