We stayed at the RV campground and earned a free pass to the great Desert of Maine. Well, let me say that it was a disappointment. The area is quiet small and I suppose if you were from NY or some other God forsaken place it might be impressive, but honestly, I've seen more sand in Arizona for free. They do have a good gimmick to get you in the door, but alas, I am afraid this one goes down as an average score, sorry. On the positive side, the people are great there and the rates are fair, plus LL Bean is just down the street.

This is just a very cool oddity just north of Portland and just south of LL Bean's. A fun little exploration to see a geological oddity. It's strange to see a pine tree surrounded by "beach" sand.

Hard to believe, but there it is! And, not even close to the Atlantic! Interesting and fun facts. Best for families with children over the age of seven.

When you get tired of shopping at the outlets, take a few minutes and see the desert. It will only take about an hour. It is a tourist trap, but so what. The two ladies who seem to run the place are very friendly. If you have a sense of humor and have some time to kill ( let's face it. Freeport Maine isn't overflowing with tourist attractions) take a shot. You will probably get a laugh out of it.

This is one of the funny, crazy tourist traps in Maine. A big pile of sand, the owners throw in "jewels and colored stones" for the kids to find....and it's a waste of money and time......they need a few more truck loads of "desert" here...
