Our 3-day, 2-night package stay should have been totally superb. Unfortunately, an unusual and unexpected potpourri of nits and picks really took the edge off and reduced our enjoyment level. We would still go back, but we would make some changes.
First off, our room was right in the front of the hotel and was very seriously affected by Main Street traffic and some mysterious early morning heavy equipment noises (street cleaning perhaps?). Second, their large rear parking lot was totally full and overflowing when we arrived. It took quite a long time to find someone leaving a precious parking space since on street parking appeared to be illegal and/or impossible. Lastly, we didn't do nearly as well on the food side of things as we had anticipated.
On the plus side, our room was outstanding; clean, well-appointed and very well-maintained. Everything worked and worked well. Service in the main dining room was absolutely textbook perfect, as was the maid service. For the most part, this is one very classy, perfectly located, well-managed property.
For the sake of politeness, I'm not going to get into the various food-side quirks and deficiencies except to say that far too many little but significant things ended up taking the edge off what should have been a perfect, multi-course, high-end dining experience. Same with the afternoon teas and, to a lesser extent, same with the buffet breakfasts. Service itself was outstanding, but someone somewhere really needs to pay a whole lot more attention to the lesser food-related details if the goal is ever to achieve true excellence.
On our second night, we couldn't get seated in the tavern for dinner because the crowd was extra large and the wait was way too long. We tried to get served at the bar instead, but it was so crowded and busy that we were ignored. We finally left and went elsewhere. Therefore, we can't comment on the food and wait staff in the tavern.
Overall, we are glad that we vacationed there and we would go back. We now know to request a room in the back, far away from Main Street and nearer to the parking lot for increased convenience. On the food side of things, we will take the lessons we learned and adjust our plans and expectations accordingly.
