Freeport has a real nice downtown with shopping, restaurants, and of coarse LL Bean. Good walking downtown with plenty of free parking that is difficult to find these days. We really enjoyed our short stay there, wished we had more time to spend.

If you have time to take a slower pace, this is an enjoyable drive. If you don't have time, don't do it. The speed limit is frequently below 55 mph. There are also a lot of people driving slowly, enjoying the views.

I just drove this road for the first time in nearly 20 years. I was so happy to be back. The towns haven't changed much and that is a good thing. Don't be in a rush when you take this drive. Enjoy each town for it's individuality and character. Support the local economy while you're at it.

Nice highway views and plenty of places to stop with nice restaurants. Also convenient access to I-295.

This route can be a relaxing and scenic drive provided you pick the right sections. First bear in mind that it doesn't always follow the coast so getting to some coastal towns may require short diversions. The section from the Canadian border at Calais to around Ellsworth sees light traffic and has , in my view, a more rugged appearance and mimics Nova Scotia rather than the sections south of Ellsworth. South of Ellsworth to around Freeport is still a nice drive but more rolling hills and not quite so rugged. South of Freeport and it becomes more built up (hotels/gas stations etc) and more traffic. However head inland on secondary roads and traffic drops away quickly and pleasant drives are readily at hand - just great in a sports car or sports sedan. Great drives country!
