“Nice alternative to interstate highway driving”
Reviewed July 29, 2014

If you are looking for a more scenic drive up to any point north of Portland this is the drive you want to take. As others mentioned it is a slower drive but it gives you the opportunity to enjoy he area for its natural layer back beauty. If you are looking for great lobster rolls that are not loaded with mayo and amazing coleslaw, Cindy's Lobster Rolls are on route 1 in Freeport is worth a stop. Their web page is www.weloveclams.com.

“Once is good enough”
Reviewed July 23, 2014

We were recommended to take this route from Portland to Bar Harbor. This is not an interstate or anything close. Most of the time you can only go 35 and pedestrians are everywhere! It's also a pedestrian-friendly state and you must stop if they stick their toe in the crosswalk, which can add a little stress to a driver who is trying to see sights, drive, and not kill someone. It was nice, but I think if you've travelled this way one time, you'll have the feel and can take a major highway next time.

“The Vacation State”
Reviewed July 8, 2014

They do not call the Main the Vacation State without reason. US 1 is very crowded, and slow moving. But you are on Vacation. Stop in Booth Bay Harbor. Park in the church parking lot, and visit the lobster boats.

The town gets very crowded. We were there about 20 years ago, but for Main that is like yesterday. We were in a Motor Home. I had to put in a date to submit this report.

“Worth the Ride!”
Reviewed July 1, 2014

Great drive during the week! Not a lot of traffic and great sights to see. Started in Freeport and went to the Maritime Museum in Bath, awesome lobster roll and Scallops at Red Eats in Wisscasset, Maine Prison Shop at Thomaston (a must see!), Rockland (lighthouse museum and Wyeth museum), grabbed a drink and lunch in Camden Waterfront restaurant overlooking Penobscot Bay, and Penobscot Bridge Observatory (very cool - tallest bridge observatory in Western Hemisphere) and Fort Knox at Bucksport. Ended in Acadia and there were several other sights which we missed due to time.
