We stayed her for a few nights while in Joberg for the world cup and sightseeing. The place was one of a kind with safari animals on the grounds - very cool! But while we were there the construction had us up very early in the morning. Rooms were beautiful, modern and classy. Buffet breakfast each morning which was fine. Dinner you needed to have a reservation and they had to be cooking that night. We heard it was good food, but didn't get lucky the night we wanted to eat. it was a bit pricey too. Make sure you have a car while there or you are stuck. There is nothing close by and although taxi service is easy and convenient, it is expensive - about $20 each way to the casino near by for dinner.

We went to the Cradle of Humankind as well - amazing day!

Johannesburg is a bit scary if you don't know where to go! The Zulu Nyala Country Manor took care of everything -- smoothly and easily. The rooms, dining and sightseeing were all excellent. Bella and Trevor were excellent hosts. We enjoyed seeing the sights with Patrick, our private tour guide, all around Pretoria, Johannesburg & loved SOWETO + the Cradle of Mankind, etc. We recommend this unique and comforting place to stay -- they aim to please!

We stayed at the Country Manor Inn before and after our trip to Zulu Nyala Game Lodge. It is a beautiful place. It has been going through some renovation. They are just finishing a convention center. The landscaping is beautiful. There are a few animals there and 4 zebras that like to graze on the grounds. We loved our rooms. They were large and very roomy. The decor was great. The food was good. If you are a dog lover, the owner has quite a few dogs that tour the property with her. We had warm, friendly service from the staff. Our driver's name was Sipho and he drove us to and from Zulu Nyala Game Lodge. He also took us on a tour of Johannesberg. We saw the Apartheid Museum which is something everybody should go see. He also took us to see the new stadium. He is a great driver. The whole trip was amazing!!!

I just returned from my vacation in South Africa where I had the opportunity to stay at one of the most relaxing and enjoyable resorts. The country manor staff was amazing, from the time they greet you at the airport, to the pleasurable transfer to the property to the meals they serve through to the checkout process. I can't say enough great things about my experience. The staff goes well beyond the call of duty. I highly suggest to anyone traveling in the Joberg area to stay at the country manor. You will be treated like family there and not like just a number you find at most hotels. The owners of the property have created such a relaxing enirnoment arund the property you have no choice but to feel relaxed and at home. I will miss everyone who made my stay so enjoyable especailly the stable girl Bella. She made the trip so enjoyable. Also if you are looking for non-touristy adventures inquire with Renee about the driving tours she can provide you and your friends.

We recently stayed three nights May 7-9 at the manor. The large estate is about a 1/2 hour (depending on traffic) from the airport, a unique private, comfortable experience. All conveniences available, modern hotel like rooms near a growing conference center, our room around the courtyard near reception was large, thatch roofed, African artifacts. Great B&B breakfasts. Many guided tours available ala carte. We enjoyed lion park and Soweto tour for history of city/area. Estate has zebras grazing openly, equestrian area, swimming pools, nicely landscaped. Lunch and dinner available. Quick taxi ride to Casino shopping mall for wide selection of restaurants - a Vegas style mall. More discriminating shoppers would more likely head to Nelson Mendala Mall. Bird sanctuary at Casino well worth the visit. We would have liked to stay one more night to eat at a restaurant called the Carnivore but time did not allow. Reception and dining staff at manor outstanding. David, guide and driver superb. Owner lives on property. Highly recommended. Tip: If you have time while waiting for your next flight, walk out of busy, noisy airport to the Intercontinental Hotel and enjoy the quiet service in the lobby bar/restaurant.

My husband & I stayed here for 2 nights prior to a 6-night stay at the Zulu Nyala Game Lodge in Hluhluwe (see separate review for Game Lodge). I had been a bit concerned after reading some of the older reviews; but more recent reviews prior to our trip were reassuring, and every query I e-mailed to the Zulu Nyala reservations office was so promptly answered and helpful that I was hopeful I'd made the right choice for our first nights in South Africa after a very long trip to get there. (We'd flown overnight from NYC to London, and then overnight again the next night from London to Johannesburg. Needless to say, we were "zonked" by the time we got there.)
Well, I have to say that from the moment we arrived in Johannesburg, every arrangement I'd made via e-mail with Zulu Nyala was perfect. Things could not have gone more smoothly for the entire trip (including our later stay at the Game Lodge). We had asked them to arrange airport transfers, and our driver was right there waiting with a sign showing our names as soon as we walked out of Customs. He immediately took charge of our luggage, and then gave us a fascinating history discourse during the ride from the airport to the Country Manor. (Traffic in Johannesburg was horrendous, so the drive took longer than we'd expected.) When we arrived, the reception folks had a very comfortable room ready for us, and also asked if we'd like lunch to be prepared there or were planning to go out. (Normally the only meals included are breakfast & dinner; but they will prepare lunch if it's requested. I hadn't thought to specifically request it , so it was very nice of them to inquire. Then, as soon as we got to our room, the chef called to give us the menu options and ask what we'd like to have them make for our lunch, and what time we'd like to eat. Amazingly personal service.) The room (#11) was rustic in decor but very clean and comfortable. Actually, it was more of a small suite, with a living room (with TV & couches which looked as if they could be made into additional beds if needed) and a separate bedroom with double bed. The bathroom was clean and bright, and the shower was particularly great, especially after 2 overnight flights--fantastic water pressure and very hot water. The grounds of the Country Manor were lovely, with (fenced) animals, pretty flowers, interesting birds and teeny little frogs on the sidewalks. It's a real "out in the country" relaxing atmosphere. We had arrangements with cousins who live in Johannesburg to come pick us up and take us out the first evening and the second day. Both sets of cousins, who have lived in the Johannesburg area their whole lives, had never before heard of the Country Manor but they walked around the grounds with us and were very impressed--they thought the place was "a lovely find". When we were there we didn't encounter any other Americans, but there were some tour groups of, respectively, French & Germans, whom we saw in the dining room at various times. (We also encountered bus-tour groups of French & Germans at the Game Lodge when we were there. I have no idea if it was the same people or other groups.) But the property is spread out ,and it always seemed as if we were at someone's private country home. The food was good, the servers were very nice and accomodating to requests. Everyone on the staff was pleasant and welcoming. We also met the owner, Trevor Shaw, and his charming daughter Nicky, which was a pleasure. Both were interested in hearing whether we were enjoying the property and if we had any suggestions or ideas for them. Again, we were made to feel like "guests" in the best sense of the word. Nicky described what wonderful things we'd be seeing at the Game Lodge, and then offered to take us on a little tour of the animals (followed by her pet wolf, and a couple of other friendly pet dogs), and even showed us how her pet mongooses (mongeese?) opened eggs to eat them. (I took a video; it was very cool. The best part was when the wolf grabbed one of the eggs and then immediately responded to Nicky's command to drop it, so she could pick it up and give it to a mongoose for my video. Who could imagine such a well-trained wolf!)
All in all, I would highly recommend the Zulu Nyala Country Lodge as a comfortable place to stay, particularly before continuing on to the Zulu Nyala Game Lodge. It is a bit out of the way if you want to go sightseeing in Johannesburg; but they can arrange transportation, etc. for you. (For us this was not an issue since we had cousins coming to take us each time and bring us back.) I would certainly plan to stay here again if I am ever lucky enough to plan another visit to the Game Lodge.
