“Scenic, Easy Trail”
Reviewed July 14, 2012

We have visited Mackworth Island the last three years. It is a very nice walk in the woods with views of the shoreline. You can easily get around it in 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how fast you walk and how much you stop. There are two places to stop along the way that have large swings. There are also benches along on the way. It is a very easy trail to walk, with hardly any elevation changes. My son enjoys walking down to the shoreline. There are also fairy houses that have been built by other hikers. New this year, they have started charging a nominal fee that you drop in a collection stand. The one drawback is the very tight, limited parking. We have always been able to get a spot, but sometimes have had to wait a few minutes for a spot to open up.

A beautiful, easy walk around an island with a diverse habitat. Good for seeing ducks. Notice the fairy houses!

“Great 1 mile easy hike with ocean views every step of the way!”
Reviewed June 19, 2012

This great Maine trail actually encircles a small island just off the coast of Falmouth. After turning off Rte #1, you will first cross a bridge, revealing your first sights of the tremendous seascape views awaiting you on this trail. As the island also houses a school for the deaf at its center property, there is a guard station at which you must stop--simply tell the guard that you're there to hike--he'll ask you if it's your first time and will provide information if needed--then, he'll direct you to the small parking area just ahead from the station and to your right. Sometimes the parking lot is full--and, if it is, no hike for you today. There's no other place to park on the island. And, if you cross back over the bridge back onto the residential street, there's residential parking only. That's it, there's simply no where else to park. However, if you are lucky and you find a parking spot, the Mackworth Island singular trail that encircles the island has much to offer. Unfortunately, dogs are required to be leashed. The moment you start your trail walk to the right of the parking lot (you can elect to go left instead), take one of the side trails down to the largest beach. If you wish, you can spend the day there, the beach is hardly used--you will likely have it all to yourself. The entire trail is an easy walk, watch for side trails taking you periodically back down to a beach/rocky area. Also watch for the ghost tree--and--a wooded area keeping all the fairy houses--a special place where people of all ages are invited to make fairy houses of their own for the wee people to live in. If you do choose to build your own fairy house, take care to only use fallen items already on the ground: twigs, pebbles, acorns, pine cones, etc., as the fairies do not take kindly to your hurting any living thing. What I like best about this trail is that it contains several spots where you can stop, set up a chair, read--and, find yourself alone with few people disturbing you. Plan on bringing snacks/drinks/doggie bags as there is no eatery sources on site. However, before turning off Rte #1, you will find many places to pick up anything you need. Again, it's a mile easy hike, perfect for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, and, who may not be as sure footed--certainly, an excellent and safe hike for smaller kids, too (and, who cannot wait to reach the fairy house site to make one of their own).

“Nice place for kids”
Reviewed May 30, 2012

This is a favorite place for us and great for the kids to spend an afternoon exploring the shore. Parking can be a bit iffy on the weekends.
