“Good seafood - and don't miss the blueberry pie!”
Reviewed August 28, 2011

While in Ellsworth, the hotel concierge recommended the Union River Lobster Pot for good seafood. We were so impressed (with the blueberry pie), we returned two nights in a row. The seafood was very fresh and well cooked (we really enjoyed the clam platter). The lobster roll was a bit disappointing (bland taste) but the fried haddock sandwich was excellent. But the highlight had to be the open-faced blueberry pie with cinnamon cream topping. All I can say is wow. The freshness of the Maine blueberries, complemented by the topping made for a very special dessert that wasn't too sweet (especially the first night - the second night had too much topping which overwhelmed the wonderful blueberries a bit more). The lobster, which is steamed outside in large saltwater pots, can be viewed before entering the restaurant - and is a nice place to wait with kids when the weather is nice. The restaurant was busy both nights, so go early or late if you can to avoid a wait. Service was excellent the first night (thanks, T. Pain!)- the second night wasn't much better than satisfactory (we had a different server on our second visit). The cost is a little steep, but not outrageous. Definitely a nice find in Ellsworth, ME!

“Native New Englander not impressed with service or just average food”
Reviewed August 27, 2011

When we entered the restaurant, the hostess was barely civil. We figured that it was a too many tourists kind of day. Unfortunately it didn't get any better. We sat down at 7 and didn't leave until 9 pm due to major screwups by the staff. The place is average at best. My husband and I ordered lobster pie and broiled scallops. My daughter had the clam chowder. We waited more than 45 minutes for our dinners (supposedly there was "no room in the oven"). When they arrived, both were SWIMMING in sauce. The broiled scallops were less "broiled" than under water in butter. The lobster pie had little lobster.

I was extremely disappointed, particularly as we are from the Boston area where seafood is plentiful and tasty. I thought we would find better here. I was wrong.

“Fantastic seafood, just as great as ever”
Reviewed August 13, 2011

I've been coming to this restaurant since I was a kid (back before they moved to the current location, even). One summer I tried the lobster stew at every restaurant we went to the whole trip, and this came out as my clear favorite. Over ten years later, and it's still the best. The plank grilled fish is fantastic, the lobster even better, and of course the lobster stew is the best I've ever eaten at any restaurant anywhere (with over 20 years and counting of summers with the family in Maine). The deserts are wonderful as well--the raspberry pie especially is the perfect mix of sweet and tart. Service is generally good for how packed they are, perhaps a tad slow, but they *are* packed, even on weeknights. Expect to wait half an hour or so to be seated, unless you come very early. I've been coming here since I was little, and it's family friendly.

“A hidden gem...”
Reviewed August 12, 2011

We were staying at nearby Green Lake as part of our Maine vacation (coming from Switzerland) when we stumbled across this restaurant. We liked it so much we came back twice in a row.
What sets this restaurant apart is the food and the service. Despite its popularity, waiting times are typically no more than 30 minutes -- and the wait is well worth it. We enjoyed some of the best, if not the best, lobster and clam chowder we have ever had in Maine (and we love to explore restaurants when we visit) The service is fast and very friendly, even though staff are extremely busy. If you like beer, try the award-winning stout or blueberry ale. The desserts are tremendous, too - although after your succulent local oysters, margarita chicken wings, lobster roll or lobster cooked in sea water, you may have no room. There's a decent kids menu as well. All in all, a hidden gem of a restaurant and one which deserves top spot in town.
