“Railroad Minus the "Scenic"”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2012

My girlfriend and I went up to go camping near Bar Harbor this past weekend and we were looking for different things to do that was indoors so we could get away from the rain. The Downeast Scenic Railroad in Ellsworth caught our eye at a local information center. We drove the 15 minutes to the station and paid the $15 per person fee to board the train. Our impression was that this would be a nice, relaxing, 1.5hr. train ride, with a lot to see. We were very disappointed!

- First, you start the ride going in one direction for about a mile, crossing several back roads and immediately turn around and go back the other direction. There was not anything to see going during this portion of the trip except a large white building that is a blueberry production building (not that interesting). Oh! But they point out the local high school! So exciting!

- Once you get pass the station you boarded at (remember you are going back the other direction) you start to experience the "scenic" portion of the trip. You go through a wetland that is like any other in Acadia. There are Ospreys in their nests that you can see, but this isn't really a rarity in this portion of Maine, much less New England.

- The wetland is short lived and the remainder of the ride is uneventful with scenes of brush, people's back yards, and industrial lots.

Overall the experience fell far short of a $15 dollar ticket. Most of the 1.5 hours consisted of switching directions, stopping at crossings, and boarding/unboarding the train.

It might be a better idea to save your money and take a short ride on your local Amtrack train. The views will be nicer.

“Oy!”

If you are a train enthusiast you may enjoy some portion of this. I took the ride with 3 kids and the yoingest wouldn't shut up about how incredibly BORING it was. If he was wrong, I could have asked him to stop. Suffice it to say, there was no mercy in Ellsworth that day. It's? might have been better if they provided more information or interavtion but all we did was stare into the woods while inhaling diesel fumes

“A great start, and a great ride”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2012

I rode the train in 2011 with four adult family members. We all had a wonderful time. The crew and staff are extremely personable and friendly, and their enthusiasm and knowledge of the history of the rail line and the area are evident. As a former resident of the Ellsworth area and somewhat of a railroad historian and enthusiast, I thoroughly enjoyed it - but more to the point, my family, who are not "train buffs", had a wonderful time as well.

As others have said, the scenic views are somewhat limited at present, although the marshlands around Card Brook east of downtown offer plently of wildlife views and the ride through the backyards of downtown Ellsworth is a unique perspective. Keep in mind the present short trip is just a beginning - the railroad will extend west toward Green Lake in the future, which will make for a much longer and more scenic journey. Still, a ride on the Downeast Scenic even now is a great way to spend part of a day and experience something people had not been able to since 1957 - take a pleasant train ride in Downeast Maine. I highly recommend it to visitors and locals alike.
