We were welcomed upon arrival by the Innkeeper with a friendly smile and quick service. The comfortable veranda gave us a beautiful view of the coastline. The home cooked full breakfast was excellent. Although dinner is not served at the inn, a local seafood restaurant is a short walk away. This is a beautiful spot for a quiet get-away.

My wife and I stayed for three nights during foliage season and would certainly be willing to include the Five Gables in our New England favourites. We were upgraded from one of the small but quaint gable rooms to a larger one with tub and working fireplace - can't fault it at that time of the year, can you? It was very comfortable, nicely appointed and had a nice ocean-view - old New England charm without being stuffy. Next time though, I might try to stay in one of the gable rooms - we had a look, and sitting in one of these gable windows when it pours down heavily must be priceless.
The true selling point of this B&B though are its hosts. Not just because they conjured up terrific breakfasts (two hot entrees, fresh fruit, granola, muffins etc); they simply seem to genuinely enjoy sharing their lovely property with their guests, making suggestions as to what to see in that area without bordering on the patronising as can happen from time to time. They came up with a "what to see/do on a rainy day guide" which was more insightful than almost any travel guide you'll find and they went out of their way to provide us with information about trips/activities still going on at that time of the year. The best rainy day option though might just be to sit next to their sizeable fireplace, picking a book from their library.
Be aware that East Boothbay is a slight distance from Boothbay Harbor (10mins by car), so you'll use your wheels for dining options. There are some terrific options at the East BB general store, which, however, closes down for the season.

Michael is a great host, and he and Dee served up inventive breakfasts served buffet style taken out on to a front deck/porch with wonderful views across a row of small cottages to a narrow forested bay. We experienced a vivid rainbow the last morning which stamped our stay with a great memory. Log fire needed windows left open and made for chilly corners in the large front parlor. Wished we'd stayed a 3rd night as we missed the botanical garden and a longer hike. Oh..and final thought - the bathrooms need an update for sure.

Most every bath in the inn has been renovated and the rest are on the way.

Stayed in York Harbor for 2 nights. Rather than trek back to Boston, found Five Gables on Internet. Totally exceeded our expectations. Gorgeous Inn, immaculate bright rooms,
wonderful porch for relaxing, sleeping, viewing the calm bay. Mike and Dee are incomparbable hosts. Obviously love what they do. Their recommendations for the area,
sightseeing and dining, were exactly what we were looking for. The included morning breakfast was fantastic, so far beyond the bland offerings (nothing hot) at York, yet York was $100 higher per night. Chicago is a long way off, but we hope to get back to this wonderful retreat and visit with Mike and Dee again.

A person could not ask for more from the Five Gables Inn at East Boothbay, Maine. The owners of the property, Mike and De Kennedy, are tremendous people! They will direct you toward great sites, great food, and a relaxed yet eventful time! The setting of their inn is a wonderful view of God's creation, and the ambience of the inn takes one way back in time. There is not television or radio. You just sit, relax, enjoy the warm fire, read books or play games, and enjoy their tea time with cookies. One gets it all at the Five Gables Inn, but the host and hostess are the ones who make it extra special!

After having enjoyed the Five Gables Inn every September for a number of years, we invited my wife's brother and his wife to join us this time. We had been so effusive in our praise of the Inn that they came with very high expectations and, as we knew would happen, their expectations were met and exceeded. The gourmet breakfasts, the friendliness and helpfullness of the owners, Mike and De and of innkeeper Lisa, the tea and cookies in the afternoon, the Port and chocolates in the evening, and the spotlessly clean and comfortable accommodations combine to make this our favorite New England Inn. It's so nice to be able to relax away from the hustle and bustle of Boothbay Harbor and yet be close enough that it's just a short drive to the shops and restaurants. We can't wait till next year!

We had a very nice weekend get-a-way in Boothbay Harbor, and very much enjoyed staying at the Five Gables Inn. Mike and De are outstanding hosts who create a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere, and the inn is very clean and comfortable. Nice touches abound. Also recommended: sailing on the Schooner Eastwind in Boothbay Harbor, and visiting the Maine Coastal Botanical Gardens.
