We always love to stop by the Whale's Rib once on our visits to Deer Isle. The food is wonderful, the service is always top-rate, and we love the atmosphere. While the restaurant is a little dark for a beautiful summer day, nothing beats hunkering down in the fog at the Whale's Rib and enjoying any of their delicious dishes, especially the Haddock (YUM). Not the place to go for a light bite, or if you're interested in a summery, warm view.

Simply superb in all manner, food, decor and service! Would highly recommend this dining establishment to anyone and well worth taking the time to find such a special place in an "out of the way" location, that being Deer Isle, Maine.

The only drawback is that it closes for the season in mid-October. We had the broiled lobster, which was enormous, well cooked, and worth the rather steep $30 price. View over the water was an added benefit. They were redoing the wine list and did not list a chardonnay by the glass, but produced a nice one on request - but could not produce a carafe or bottle of the same with the meal. The Muscadet instead was ordinary and bland. Warm blueberry bread pudding (a la mode!) for dessert was terrific, as were the steamed clams and mussels beforehand. Service was knowledgeable, friendly and all that anyone could desire. We will make sure that our next visit to Deer Isle will be at a time when this highly recommended watering hole is open for business.

Because we stayed here, we had the breakfasts which were quite good...only one choice plus juice, muffins and cereal. Dinner was delectably good in simple surroundings and for a more casual setting you can in eat in the bar area/sitting area around a big old fireplace. Surrounding are warm and cozy.

Dined here twice last week. Superb food, and I loved the different rooms (traditional dining room, small pub, two sitting rooms) that each offered a different ambiance. Place was packed on Saturday, but service was still good. Nice mix of locals and visitors.
