What an unknown secret……we had wonderful hosts who told us about Salt Bay. We just can't say enough about the wonderful food, the affordable prices, the atmosphere, and the service. Truly our best experience while in the Boothbay Region. We had two meals there -- breakfast and dinner. There are many, many vegan and gluten free options, and the chef is happy to make changes and make sure his customers leave happy. The best part was our shock at the bill at the end of the night -- we even asked our wonderful waitress if she'd made a mistake. Don't miss the Salt Bay Cafe….and if you get lucky you can even eat outside at their table on their front lawn with your dogs in tow! Worth coming back to Maine just for another Salt Bay Cafe meal.

My husband and I stumbled upon this cozy little Cafe. Service was amazing. Liz did a great job. She suggested a few of her favorite dishes. I had the Galic steak with garlic mashed potatoes with veggie of the day and my husband had the Chicken and Broccoli Alfredo. BOTH dishes were DELICIOUS!!! our waitress, Liz, timed everything perfectly. We had our appetizer, potato wedge nachos. Once we were close to finishing that, she brought out our soup and salad. We had plenty of time to finish each course before she brought out our dinner. He intervals of checking on us were perfect. I would highly recommend this quaint little place to anyone I know. Our experience there was amazing and we will definitely go back :-)

We actually only stopped in for coffee but read the menu while there and were very impressed with the offerings. Gluten free as well as vegan and vegetarian choices. Fresh pasteries. It has a cozy feel to it in this small town with musicians playing on the streets. The Damariscotta harbor is beautiful too with it's large flowing river. Good service, friendly people.

We were coming back from Pemaquid and had originally planned on eating at the Damariscotta River Grill, a place where had dined and had a very nice meal. Given where we parked we had to walk past the Salt Bay Cafe and met an elderly couple on their way out we highly recommended this place, saying they have eaten there over 20 times. So we did.

While they did have a good gluten free menu and nice sized martinis, we seemed to have a long time to order and then it took a long time for the food to arrive. Some of this understand as we were a party of 7 which included two children. The hostess and waitress both were very pleasant but the scallops, fish and other entrees were not memorable but ok and the next time we are in town, back to the Grill.

We have been to the Salt Bay Cafe quite a few times in the past few years but this last trip was very disappointing. When we arrived the host did not have our table ready and when we sat down, he simply put all the plates and utensils in a pile and said we could "figure it out." There were only two servers for the entire restaurant and they were also maintaining the bar at the same time. Our food was mediocre and there were bugs on the wall and the floor was dirty. Our waiter was very friendly but was considerably stressed by the amount of tables he was trying to serve (and did rather well under the circumstances) but it was not a relaxing atmosphere. Our food came out before anyone had cleared our appetizer dishes and we had to juggle all the plates while trying to make room for the new plates at the same time. Nothing like busing your own table. They were very unorganized and I would not go back for fear of a repeat performance. Too bad because we used to like this place....
