“History tour”
Reviewed October 23, 2012

Having read the book by Bernard Cornwell called The Fort decided to come and check the area out. The fort is stil partially there and you could envisage how the battle took place. There is a military academy in the vicinity which is quite fitting. A small but quaint town with some beautiful homes along the waterfront. A lighthouse which is worth going to have a look at.

“Interesting History”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

The bay area is the site of the largest pre WW2 defeat for the US Navy during the American Revolution. Site was attacked by Americans in 1779, then given back to the US, attacked by the British in the war of 1812, easily taken. I think the State could do better with describing the history of the fort, and what it looked like, as there is really not a great deal on the fort site. As a Canadian this is an important piece of the history of Canada as the US Canadian border was for a short time based on the Penboscot River rather than the St Croix. Worth a visit for the history buff, nice area.

“An interesting earthenworks fort!”
Reviewed July 16, 2012

The remnants of an earthen works fort built by the British in the late 1700s to defend Castine against the US. It sits on the highest point in Castine. One building remains (or the foundation of it), giving some insight into what the structures looked like. It is much larger than Fort Madison. There is also the remains of a underground tunnel that I presume the British used to sneak in and out of the fort unnoticed. What I didn't see was an artists rendition of what the fort looked like in it's heyday, so I had a little trouble picturing things as they would'be been back then. My husband tells me there are renditions, so look one up on the web before you visit for a better idea. It was still an interesting place to visit.
