“Way Beyond Expectation!”
Reviewed November 10, 2010

This was a trip with my son and grandson to find where our Swedish ancestors came to New Sweden, near Caribou, arriving from Jemptland, Sweden in 1871.

It was our first experience with a B& B and we were more than pleased with the home and the hospitality. Great breakfasts and visits with hosts and other guests. We loved the relaxed atmosphere and the unique collections of antiques and books. Kevin greeted us as we pulled into the drive, immediately making us welcome. Kate was helpful with directing us to local activities and restaurants.

I bought the little book about antique irons and a little replica brass slug iron. Who could ask for more?

I would be afraid to try at another B&B, thinking nothing else will meet the high standards at The Old Iron Inn!

I am in hopes of visiting the area again and will work it around the availability of a room at The Old Iron Inn.

My husband and I stayed at the Old Iron Inn for the weekend of my brother's wedding. There are not many choices for accommodations in Caribou, but I think we definitely made the best choice. The room was a good size and could have accommodated three people if we needed it to. The in-suite, private bathroom was also good sized, clean, and included a shampoo/conditioner/body wash dispenser. The room had access to free wi-fi, which was a bonus for us. There is a sitting/TV room on the second floor, which included a small fridge with complimentary bottles of water and snacks. Books galore fill the shelves, so you won't be lacking for reading material. Kate and Kevin were great hosts and gave us many recommendations for things to do while we were in town, and the breakfasts were great. Overall, it was a great value and a great place to stay.

Wow! What a wonderful experience we had at our first B&B. The old iron inn was charming, quiet and full of old irons with tons of history. Kate and Kevin were the perfect host and hostess. We were greeted and shown the room to make sure we would like it. We immediately decided to stay and what a great choice we made. The beds were very comfortable, very clean rooms, fluffy towels, and a fridge upstairs for our convenience. We felt right at home and oh the breakfast the next morning was to die for. Kate made fresh peanut butter muffins, eggs, fresh fruit and wonderful coffee. She gave us directions to some back roads with lots of scenery. Very knowledgeable. Kevin even posed for a photograph for us. The only negative...Kate would not let us take her picture. Oh well, we will just need to come back and sneak a picture.
Oh and we found out that Kate irons the sheets! Now that is first class!

It was my first time experience a bed and breakfast and I was a little skeptical but figured I'd take the chance since I was traveling with a colleague. It was well worth the risk. We arrived earlier than expected and yet we were greeted with warm friendly service. The breakfast was absolutely excellent and ooh the freshly baked muffins are to die for. after a long days work, room and the bed calls your weary body to rest and yes, you do awake refreshed. My favorite part however, has to be the freshly baked muffin, hands down!

We stayed at the Old Iron Inn in Caribou during the peak of the Fall colors in northern Maine. What a great place to stay! So much more personal than the "cookie cutter" motel rooms we stayed during the beginning of our trip. We spent 3 nights in the Old Iron Room and enjoyed Kate's wonderful breakfasts of omlets, pancakes, homemade muffins and fresh fruit. Kate is very knowledgeable of the local area functions and events and recommended a variety of activities. The home was neat and clean with large, fluffy towels and our own bathroom. The Inn is filled with antiques, a collection of old irons and an eclectic group of old pictures and unique items that took days to explore. Our hostess, Kate treated us like family and was very accomodating. So much so that we have decided to spend our honeymoon there next year!

It's a very cute house with 2 little apts next to it. I stayed in the downstairs apt which is a 1 bedroom, clean and neat, with a full kitchen and a full bath. I was invited to join the other guests for a breakfast on Sunday and chatted away with very interesting travelers while eating fresh pineapple, fresh blueberry pancakes and bacon. It was nice!!! The wi-fi was a little weak from the apt, although the router was aimed at the apt from the house. It didn't matter, I'm typing this in the dining room of the inn itself. The owner, Kate, is very nice and accommodating, as long as you are here for a nice quiet and respectable time. I had 1 night where the upstairs apt neighbor was rather rowdy and loud at 1am, and she promptly took care of it! The location is great, practically across the street from a nice large grocery store and down the street from the main downtown area where the fire station, police station and movie theater all are, which means that in cases of inclement weather, these roads are cleared right away!
