This is a new and well maintained resort, as others have written. Finding such a resort in Maine is not easy. We stay in great properties, and have to adjust expectations in Maine. Thus, paying over $500 a night is challenging when the property isn't ready for prime time. What are the problems? Right now I am listening to a barking dog on my terrace overlooking the sea. The hotel is so dog-friendly it's ridiculous(and I am a dog lover though not a dog owner). Dogs are permitted on the terrace dining area, for example. There are 5 "doggy items" on the in-room "doggy menu". With half the world's population starving, this is offensive. At the very least, it looks like a kennel convention here. We will be at the Four Seasons in Provence in 3 weeks and I can guarantee you there won't be a parade of hounds (and their clueless, entitled owners) everywhere you go.

Yes, this place is very expensive, and the value delivered is not matched. The walls are thin and we had to call management at 11 pm because it sounded like hoodlams next door. But the beach is beautiful (it is a state beach), the food is good (lunch is easily $60 without wine), and the proximity to things to do is great. We are happy to pay extra for 5 star resorts. This is barely 4 star. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived either (6 pm). But the staff is friendly and I'm not sure there are any better choices in southern Maine.

We spent three nights at Inn by the Sea and had reserved a two-bedroom unit that was equipped with a small kitchen. We arrived at 3:30 pm but the room was not ready until 4:30 pm. The unit had a nice porch with distant ocean views. Furnishings were standard issue. It looked as though the room had been recently updated. Each of the two bedroom and the sitting area/living room had non-HD LCD flat screen TV's. Cable reception was spotty as was wireless internet access. The single bathroom was tiny - far too small for a two-bedroom unit. The kitchen was small (as expected), which we shared with a large number of fruit flys. The boardwalk leading to the beach was nice and leads to a public beach. There were not enough beach chairs and umbrellas to accommodate all guests - first come, first served. Not what you would expect since you are paying a 5% resort fee (our fee was greater than $30/day). The pool looked lovely but was so small there were never any chairs available. Breakfast on the porch was a perfect setting, but on the only day we had breakfast, the Inn was short-staffed so we had to wait 15 minutes before coffee/juice were served and another 25 minutes for breakfast.

A nice setting with nice grounds, but not a good value.

We just stayed at this resort in the beginning of August 08. We stayed in a loft cottage with our little maltese. The loft cottage was perfect for the 4 of us - our dog really loved the spacious cottage. The cottage was gorgeous, spacious, immaculate, furnishings were high end - could not have been happier with the room(s). The beds were ULTRA COMFY. The grounds were unbelievably beautiful. Staff was most accomodating and very polite and nice. My daughter loved the exercise room, spa treatments, steam bath/sauna & outdoor pool was a perfect 80 degrees. The beach was a short (3 minute) walk from the hotel grounds via a pathway. It was a great vacation resort/spa. The price was more than worth it.

Beautiful property. Excellent restaurant. We stayed in a suite that was very tastefully decorated with a bedroom and large sitting area. There was also a nice balcony overlooking the pool. Room service ok. Very accomodating and pleasant staff.

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left "five star" is the best description of this property. The bellmen upon arrival were friendly and attentive (as a good handshake!) The check in desk staff made us feel "like regulars". Rooms were contemporary and interestingly enough we walked down to our garden suite; a nice touch. Salt pool was just the right temp and the walk to the beach scenic and invigorating. Restaurant's view was of the grounds and the ocean, service by Christo wonderful and the food superb. The massage was terrific and theraputic. The only downside was the work out area, not quite up to the Inn's standards. Otherwise we can't wait to return and spread the word !
