“Nice hotel, but over priced!!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2011

We recently spent an overnight at the Inn as a respite following my son's wedding in Portland. The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful. Our standard room in the main hotel was wonderful. Room and bath quite spacious; well decorated with screened windows we could open to hear the waves (no blacony in our room). Although we had somewhat of a view of the water, the beach was actually a bit away. At the end of the property there is a small "boardwalk" through the woods which lands you on a sand beach and hotel staff delivering chairs and umbrellas. Very relaxing, although I am spoiled by our Jersey beaches. We had a fabulous dinner in the restaurant (get the scallops). Went over to Prouts Neck the next morning for breakfast and cliff walk. Amazing!

Although everything was perfect, I couldn't help thinking about the price for this room- $434 paid in full in March and then $70 tacked on for taxes. This was just for the room-no breakfast or dinner. We have traveled rather extensively and stayed at 5star hotels, but somehow there was just something not quite there. Would I stay there again? You bet- but for $275. Let me know when you have a sale.

Dear Joycap: Thank you for providing your feedback regarding your recent stay at Inn by the Sea. I am glad you enjoyed your experience and that the room accommodation, dinner and staff service added to your favorable review of the property. I further appreciate your feedback regarding the room rate. We are a small and highly seasonal property and as such our rates do fluctuate a great deal over the course of the year. While summer is a terrific time of year to visit, fall, winter and spring each have their own special qualities and rates are typically lower during these off-peak seasons. I do hope to have an opportunity to welcome you back to Inn by the Sea the next time your travels bring you to Southern Maine. Warm regards, Sara Masterson

The hotel was wonderful. The staff was friendly and helpful. We had a room in the main building which beautiful. The bathroom was huge and very clean. The beach was great and they had chairs available to use. Wish we could have stayed all week!

Double Cottage- Upper suite 3 BRS / Lower Suite 2 BRs. Four Adults- Two Children
Approximate cost per night = $1800
One air conditioner for three BRs. Second floor was a sweatbox all day and night.
Cottages are old and in disrepair. Spent at least 30 minutes per night before retiring to kill 25-30 bugs in the room. Ill-fitting screens just ONE reason.
Pool was also a bug-fest.
Water leak caused water shutdown- no showers, no bathroom use- both cottages were wet and smelly.
Staff not arrogant but a level below such.
Nothing at all for kids to do. Town not within walking distance. Ocean "views" are very distant ones- binoculars might help.
For the price, not something I would ever do again. Kids were sweating all night, A/C was old window model I had in the 1980s and you need a car to get to anything. $1800 per night should have provided much more.

Just stayed here this past weekend. Family of four, au pair and puppy. Arrived at 11:30 a.m. Told our room was vacated the night before, but was still not ready for us, but would be shortly. Had a nice lunch at restaurant. By 12:30, told our room was still not ready, but would be shortly. Walked to beach, walked around resort, hung out. At 1:30 told our room was still not ready for us and that they "didn't want to rush housekeeping." We have a two year old and a five year old. This was not good. By 2:30 our room was finally ready. No apologies or anything. Understanding that check-in wasn't until 4, we didn't make a big deal about it (granted, they did tell us that our room was vacated the day before so it's not clear why they couldn't have serviced it earlier and no explanation was provided, except that they didn't want to "rush" housekeeping.

Room was excellent (#112). We have been to some of the nicest places and the room was definitely comparable and even better. Our most recent comparison is the Chatham Bars Inn and the room (Garden Suite) was MUCH nicer than the room we had there (Deluxe Oceanfront Suite). We are going to the Wequasset later this summer and are interested to see how it compares.

Pool not so good for kids. It's really small and is 4 feet at the low end and 6 and the deep end. This means it is a "working" pool for parents with small kids. They can't be in it alone. There is a very small stair area where all the kids are huddled and it makes it very annoying. This would be the primary reason we won't be back soon.

Beach is beautiful. Staff sets up chairs and umbrellas. Very very nice. Short and pretty walk down a path to the beach from the resort.

Note that this is a very dog-friendly resort, which is good if you have a dog. I will say that it didn't feel like dogs were everywhere. We also had a dog-friendly room and it was very clean and smell free.

Restaurant isn't good, although we didn't have dinner there. Breakfast and lunch are very expensive and the services is extremely slow. The food was just ok. Lobster roll isn't worth it at all. Best thing we ordered was a burger which was just ok. Lunch for 2 adults and 1 child was $98 (2 lobster rolls, a bowl of cereal, a bagel with cream cheese, a pices of chocoloate cake and three tiny scoops of sorbet).

The services was excellent, for the most part. The young kids who work at the restaurant, pool and around the resort are great. Very friendly and always smiling. Really really good. MUCH better than Chatham Bars Inn. With ONE exception. Yesterday, the day we were checking out, we went back to our room at about Noon (check-out is Noon) and our key didn't work. I went to the front desk to inquire and was told that because check-out was Noon the key was deactivated. They literally locked us out of our room! The person at the front desk said, very sternly, that check-out was at Noon and that we needed to "vacate" our room and asked if she could send someone to "collect our bags" because someone was waiting to check in! We felt like we were being thrown out of the hotel! This after waiting 3 and almost 3.5 hours for our room to be ready on Friday and when we were told, in no uncertain terms, that check-in was 4pm!

All in all, it's a decent place. Needs to polish the check-in / check-out service a bit better.

Room Tip: We were in 112. Garden Suite. Very nice, on the corner overlooking pool and grounds. No ocean view.

This is our 3rd stay at the Inn by the Sea. We keep coming bac to experience all the seasons! Our last stay was in September 2010 and previous to that December 2009 (please see my other review). We stayed in a King Spa Suite - pet friendly with my Pekingese Taishan. This is her first trip to the Inn by the Sea and hopefully won't be her last. It was all about her because of the Inn being pet friendly. Dogs aren't allowed on the beach at certain times but she had to try it out for at least a second. The King Spa Suite was wonderful. Like a loft apartment with a kitchenette with small 'fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, and sink. The spa bathroom has a whirlpool tub, double vanity, and a large walk-in shower. Everything is always super clean and you would never know that we were in a pet-friendly room. We have a few more trips planned to the Inn by the Sea. We haven't been there during high-season (summer) or in the middle of winter, but would like to try both times of year.

My family of 5 stayed in a lovely suite this past spring. The hotel was recently refurbished and the rooms are stylish and very comfortable. The staff is delightful if somewhat overly familiar- not cool professionals like you might find in a city hotel. But I liked their warmth. The restaurant is tasty and elegant, but a bit too formal for families with young children. We went to a delicious and informal local place down the street called The Good Table. It was too chilly for the pool or beach but both were really attractive and the beach is truly gorgeous. I lived the little cocktail lounge for morning coffee and afternoon tea. Yummy cookies at bedtime were such a nice touch. We had a great stay!

To get to our room from the lobby, we had to go up a half dozen steps, down a hallway, then down half a dozen steps, an inefficient design. The air conditioner in the room was wake you up loud. The suite we occupied was very nice with two spacious rooms and a small patio overlooking the pool. The net is that we felt the place was over priced.

On the other hand, the food was pretty good and the staff was generally helpful and friendly. The suite we picked had two rooms with a small patio overlooking the pool. It was also 15 minutes from Portland by car. Although you could walk to the sea, it's about a quarter mile from the hotel over a narrow boardwalk through a marshland and barely visible from the hotel.
