Owner description: Maine's oldest lighthouse - and one of the most picturesque and most frequently photographed in the U.S. - has been in operation since 1791. Although it is closed to the public, you can stop by the adjacent museum, enjoy the grounds which include a beach, lawns and picnic areas and view boats entering and leaving the harbor.

Lovely spot to take in the Maine coast. Make sure to take the cliff walk once you have visited the lighthouse.

My wife and I visited this charming lighthouse and park on a recent business trip to the area. We really enjoyed checking out the ruins that surround this beautiful, scenic light. There are ruined shore batteries and other structures that have been used over the centuries to defend the Portland harbor.

It was a neat experience sitting on a rock bench that purportedly was were Henry Wadsworth Longfellow sat while composing his poem The Lighthouse. A visit here is definitely worth the time. Particularly near sunset when the colors are spectacular.

You can drive or take a tour from Portland, like the trolley, to see this famous lighthouse. It was built at the directive of George Washington starting in 1791. It is surrounded by Ft. Williams, which has picnic areas & hiking trails. There is a museum, bathrooms, & gift shop at the lighthouse. We thought it was the highlight of Portland.

We love lighthouses. We have planned several vacations around visiting Michigan lighthouses so when we planned our trip to Maine we included as many lighthouses as time would allow. Portland Head Light was a highlight. Portland Head is as beautiful as its many pictures and more spectacular in real life. Portland Head Light is a beautiful lighthouse for pictures. The rocky ocean shore and rolling grass surroundings add to the beauty of this lighthouse. An enjoyable afternoon.

There are two lighthouses at Cape Elizabeth -- one is open to the public (the larger Portland Head Light along with Fort Williams) and one is now privately-owned (called Two Lights now). The Portland Head Light besides the lighthouse has a cliff walk that is fabulous.
