Owner description: Maine's oldest lighthouse - and one of the most picturesque and most frequently photographed in the U.S. - has been in operation since 1791. Although it is closed to the public, you can stop by the adjacent museum, enjoy the grounds which include a beach, lawns and picnic areas and view boats entering and leaving the harbor.

“Maine's Oldest Light House”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2013

Portland's Head Light was the highlight of our trip to Maine. Beautiful place for pictures...rocky shore, ocean view, and you can eat in the dining room or sit out at the picnic tables and enjoy the scenery. There's a great gift shop, along with a museum which is in the former lighthouse keeper's quarters. It's located along the shore of Fort Williams Park, where you can picnic, hike, watch ocean views, and even play sports. The park is open year round and there's no fee. There is a fee for the museum, but well worth it.

“Great Pictures and Adventures!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2013

My boyfriend and I decided to visit the Portland Head Light while in Maine because it looked so beautiful in all the photos we'd seen. The views in person are more spectacular than any picture could capture. I love photography, so I really enjoyed how scenic the area was, but we also loved climbing around on all the rocks and cliffs surrounding the lighthouse. We spent a couple hours exploring. A must-see if you are visiting Portland!

“Iconic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2013

Commissioned by George Washington, Portland Head Light has been in continuous operation since 1791. It is one of the oldest lighthouses in the United States.

The term "iconic" seems over-used these days, but PHL truly is iconic. It is widely regarded as the most-photographed spot in Maine and is a symbol for the beautiful coast of Maine. It is extremely picturesque and has attracted many great artists, including Edward Hopper.

The site offers great views of open ocean, some of the Calendar Islands of Casco Bay, the ship channel and Portland's east end, several other operating lighthouses, and the shoreline of much of Cape Elizabeth.

The park in which PHL is located (Fort Williams Park) is open from sunrise to sunset. It is free.

Your trip to Maine is not complete without a stop at Portland Head Light.

“Gorgeous Lighthouse location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2013

On our first trip to Maine we wanted to photograph and visit some lighthouses. What a beautiful, scenic spot. We took lots of lovely photos. Surrounding scenery is gorgeous. This has become our favorite lighthouse so far. Amazing to see the foghorn.

“Picture Perfect”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2013

The PHL is an excellent scenery locale with water traffic entering Portland Harbor, colorful and all that you'd expect along the Maine Coast. The nearby Fort Williams can in itself be a destination for hiking and history. Also, this is very close to outstanding Inn By The Sea!
