Owner description: Maine's oldest lighthouse - and one of the most picturesque and most frequently photographed in the U.S. - has been in operation since 1791. Although it is closed to the public, you can stop by the adjacent museum, enjoy the grounds which include a beach, lawns and picnic areas and view boats entering and leaving the harbor.

Cape Elizabeth is a beautiful community outside Portland and the lighthouse is a real gem. Beautifully maintained on the outside and a nice little self-guided museum of the history of the lighthouse. The lighthouse is located in a lovely park with spectacular views of the rugged coastline and open ocean. This is a must see.

Portland was a stop on our recent cruise on the Carnival Glory. My cousin lives in Cape Elizabeth, so she picked us up and brought us to the Head Light. It was absolutely beautiful, especially on the sunny day we went. It also wasn't very crowded. There are walking trails and a playground for children.
