Owner description: Maine's oldest lighthouse - and one of the most picturesque and most frequently photographed in the U.S. - has been in operation since 1791. Although it is closed to the public, you can stop by the adjacent museum, enjoy the grounds which include a beach, lawns and picnic areas and view boats entering and leaving the harbor.

“The National Symbol for Maine”
Reviewed March 13, 2013

This is the most photographed lighthouse in Maine and it rests on the rocky shore with the (free) park. We have taken pictures from our boat and it gives you a different perspective. tour boats do take you out from Portland Harbor. In the summer a local artist has paintings of the lighthouse for sale (reasonable) and there is a very small gift shop. Motor Homes can easily park. A large are to walk along the shore as well as within the large grass covered areas. A nice place for a picnic with family. A cheap day on the ocean which is rare in Maine. Bring your camera and have fun.

This lighthouse was commissioned by Washington himself. Super park, super view of the opening of Casco Bay. Come out on a Sunny summer day with your kids, come out for a picnic. Gorgeous.

“I could sit there for hours!”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

I visited in January 2013 and October 2011. The gift shop of course was closed in January, a little snow on the ground, and that gave the lighthouse a very pretty look. There were very few visitors and the entire grounds had a peaceful feel to it. The sky was clear and by simply walking to the other side of the lighthouse, the views change a lot but are equally beautiful. Plan to come to this place anytime you are in the area and take a lot of photos, you won't regret it. It reminds me of sitting on top of Diamond Head on Oahu and staring at the sea. A peaceful, easy feeling....

“A must see for tourists and locals alike”
Reviewed February 15, 2013

No matter what time of year, this is such a great place to visit. Always lots of photographers trying to get that perfect photo. Bring your lunch and spend the day as this place is open all year long. Winter brings out the families to go sliding in the park. Take some time to enjoy the entire property surrounding the lighthouse.
