Owner description: Maine's oldest lighthouse - and one of the most picturesque and most frequently photographed in the U.S. - has been in operation since 1791. Although it is closed to the public, you can stop by the adjacent museum, enjoy the grounds which include a beach, lawns and picnic areas and view boats entering and leaving the harbor.

Only a short ride from our hotel - gorgeous! Bring your wallets as the adorable gift shop has a wonderful selection of items and it also helps to keep the area as beautiful as it is! The staff is great and is definitely prepared to provide a wealth of knowledge on its history.

Living in Florida most of my life, I love going north for vacations. I was on a mission to find this light house! It took a bit of time to find it from South Portland, (were we were staying,) but it was well worth the time. I even asked if it was for sale! (Like we could really afford it )LOL. A must see!

Just a lovely place to see in person.....so impressive well-kept with lovely views! There is a little cape walk next to the museum shop which is a wonderful way to really see the lighthouse and ocean views.

We decided to visit several lighthouses during our tour of New England and we thought Portland Head Light was the most worthwhile.
It takes a bit of time to get to the light but once you are there the views make up for it!
If you like picturesque lighthouses this is in our opinion the best to visit

Our visit to the lighthouse was a bleak and overcast day. It was cold damp and spectacular.
The beautiful sound ofcthe lught house "whistle" welcomed home the mariners from the days at sea. A sound that would have been comfortibg to those of days gone past pre gps and radar.
The sea reminds you that she is in charge and stark reminders of her power tell you of those who challenged but sadly crashed along the jagged rocks.
A great place to stop and take in the ocean rest and snap some holiday pics.
