“Dinner overrated”
Reviewed July 28, 2006

The service at Hartstone Inn is very attentive, for example, one finds coordinated bath robes, ear plugs and umbrellas. The rooms are overly decorated , but somehow remain functional due to thoughtful arrangement. There are a few oddities, however. The breakfast is served at two times only, 8.30am sharp or 9.00am sharp. The dinner, served at 7 pm only, is fixed menu with no choice. Worse, the food at dinner when we ate there was mediocre and not exceptional at all. So skip the dinner but do appreciate the supply of ear plugs. You will need the ear plugs to filter out the street noise since the Inn is on the main traffic route.

  • Liked — Richly decorated, losts of thoughtful supplies
  • Disliked — Mediocre dinner
  • Tips/Secrets — Skip the dinner

My husband & I have stayed at this BEAUTIFUL inn 5 times now and each time gets better, thanks to the hosts, Michael & Mary Jo Salmon. Their business card has the quotation, "Elegant accomodations and gourmet cuisine in the heart of Camden village." Those words are hardly adequate to describe the magical experience every guest has when they stay here.
We highly recommend a stay at the Hartstone Inn, but it comes with a warning that, like us, you may never want to leave!

Before kids, we stayed here every year; this was our first time in four years. Our memories of it were wonderful, but if possible, on this past trip it was even better. Certainly the premises had expanded, and we stayed in one of the new suites in the new property. As with all of the other rooms we had stayed in, it was beautifully appointed but still warm and approachable. The food is simply exceptional, with new surprises in every course: I can't imagine a better breakfast anywhere. I have eaten at Michelin-starred restaurants that were not this good. If you have time, go for a package that includes a dinner; it is very good value, and gives Michael the chance to express his creativity in several more courses. Perhaps most importantly, the Inn remains a very intimate lodging experience and a particularly gracious one at that, with the tone set by Mary Jo herself. Finally, the beauty is manifested in every detail, from the bedding to the landscaping; the Salmons have managed the impossible task of being relentless perfectionists without losing their warmth and charm. The Hartstone Inn reflects this blessed balance, and it is a place not to be missed.

My husband and I just returned from a week long vacation in Maine. We spent two nights at the Hartstone Inn. When we arrived, we were greated by the assistant Innkeeper, Ruthie. She was extremely friendly. She showed us around the Inn. We were definitely amazed when we walked into our room. It was really beautiful and very spacious. We stayed in the Arbor Suite which is actually in a separate building in back of the parking lot. This was really nice because it added to our privacy. The gardens walking to the other building were just beautiful. The bed was very comfortable. The first night the room was a little warm (Maine had been getting a lot of rain and cold weather prior to our stay and the air conditioners werent in yet, but without even asking, there was an air conditioner in the window the second night. Breakfast each morning was amazing. The food was delicious and presentation couldnt be beat. The staff and the Inn were all very friendly. The inn's location is perfect. You could easily walk to restaurants and the water. If you're ever in Camden, Main, I would highly recommend staying at the Hartstone Inn!

My husband and I frequently stay at bed and breakfasts. We have stayed at many that all have their special touches- a great room, a great breakfast, a great view. Never have we styaed at a place where everything just came together so perfectly. camden is a wonderful town anyway so you'd be hard pressed to have a bad time, but the Hartstone Inn is clearly the creme de la creme. the room was absolutely beautiful- we stayed in the Orchid Room on the first floor in the front- and it was tastefully decorated. Everything you could possibly imagine needing away from home was there.

The meals are incredible. Let me say that again- INCREDIBLE!!!! The owner/chef attended the Culinary Institute of America. Best meal I have had in ages and I am hard to please as I have Celiac disease which means I cannot tolerate anything with wheat rye barley or oats. i let them know in advance and they were so accomodating. Tthey had even made me gluten-free cookies for my arrival. We chose to eat their for dinner and it was a feast- crab cakes with a sweet corn relish follwed by a salad with pears and maple vinaigrette. Blueberry sorbet to cleanse the palate and then an herb encrusted halibut dish with the freshest vegetables i have ever tasted.

Breakfast was more of the same- fresh fruit with homemade yogurt floowed by a baked egg souffle with ham and a "secret sauce." Best meal, best night's sleep and the owners were wonderful and friendly to boot. Can't recommend it enough!

This was our second visit to the Harstone Inn and it was absolutely wonderful. We chose to celebrate our wedding anniversary again in Camden and because of the Harstone Inn, it may become an annual tradition/trek. Everything is just perfect-- the location the food, the suites--you won't be disappointed!!

We recently returned from a delightful stay at the Hartstone Inn in Camden. The building is architecturally stunning, and the location is very conveninet for walking to the village shops and restaurants. There are lots of charming details and thoughtful touches throughout the Inn. The most notable aspect of all, however, is the amazing food. I don't know which we enjoyed more--the breakfasts or the dinners! Everything was creative, flavorful, and artfully presented. We also appreciated that the style of service was friendly yet professional. So if you are traveling to Camden, be sure to stay and dine at the Hartstone Inn. We are looking forward to a return visit ourselves!
