Such a cool little island. We kayaked out and if you leave from Laite Beach, it's a very short trip out to the island. It is open to the public and you can roam freely on the island. It has all kinds of little trails and there is a lighthouse on the island that a woman lives in. The coolest part (besides the view obviously) was probably the giant swing that sits in the middle of the island.

This lighthouse was hard to find and but was beautiful. I took a lot of pictures of the lighthouse. I found 5 lighthouses.

If you're looking for a short and safe island adventure head out to Curtis Island. It's a good stone's throw from the mainland. Rent a local kayak or sweet talk some local mariner. The island is pristine, has a fantastic lighthouse overlook a bluff, and a trail that circles the island. You can easily pass a few hours wandering about. If the friendly lighthouse keeper is around, she'll let you up into the light and tell you some interesting tidbits about the island and lighthouse. There's a beach to beach your kayak. Be sure to circle the island on your kayak too.

We have a couple of small boats, a rowboat and a canoe, and a major reason is to have a way to get out to Curtis Island park for a picnic on a nice summer day. It's so great to sit in the noontime shade of the old lighthouse and watch the schooners, fishing boats, and yachts coming and going out of Camden Harbor. Our grandkids love to explore around the back trails of the island. When they were younger we even buried "pirate treasure out there and had fun digging it up again with astonished friends two years later. Put your rowboat or canoe in the water at either Laite Beach or the Steamboat Landing boat slip, put your luch or refreshments aboard and head out!
