Swan House Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #16 of 19 Camden B&B and Inns
Reviewed July 25, 2011

We stayed for 4 days over the 4th July holiday period. This B&B is a convenient 5 minute walk from the town centre where you will find a good choice of restaurants etc. Camden itself is a charming pretty town well worth a visit. I shall not go into the accommodation as this is already covered by previous reviewers. I must comment on the standard of breakfast however. Pastries are freshly baked every morning to a standard a french patisserie would be proud of and tasted every bit as good. Cooked breakfasts were prepared with fresh ingredients, varied daily and tasted excellent. Hosts Lynn & Ken were most helpful and a good source of information when seeking out the local attractions. Hidden highlight: "shootin the breeze" with Ken and the other guests over coffee in the morning.
Overall. About as good as it gets.

My wife and I booked a room at Swan House at the last minute and they were able to accomodate us in the high season (July) in Maine. We had stayed at several other B abd B's during our recent Maine vacation. This one was very pleasant and the accomodations, as my wife described them, "Cute as a doll house". I've had experience with residential renovations and I was impressed by the quality of the finish of our suite. The bathroom was modernized so that it was up to the quality of a decent hotel bathroom. Previously we had stayed in several B and B's on our trip which featured "decorator" claw foot bath tubs equipped with an add-on shower curtain inclosure which made the morning shower routine cumbersome at best and quite an adventure getting in and out of this kind of bath/shower set-up.This was not the case at Swan House as our suite had a stall shower, which was small, but preferred to the other type of arrangement we had earlier in our trip. It was quite warm this year in July on the Maine coast and the A/C was able to keep the room quite comfortable for us. They do feature free WiFi which at some more exspensive accomodations we were charged for this service. The breakfasts were always quite good and the variety of breakfast items available each morning was impressive. Lyn and Ken Kolh are very friendly and gracious hosts. We'll make it point stay here any time we visit Camden in the future.

We hope that you enjoyed the remainder of your vacation and that you will return to visit with us again someday. It's always a pleasure to have such upbeat guests as yourselves, here at the inn.

We come to Camden each year in June to celebrate the end of my teaching year. Our former accomodation had gone out of business so we were in the market for a new place this year. We stayed at the Swan House one night and wished we could stay longer, but we were already booked elsewhere the other 2 nights. We stayed in the smaller Leda room in the main house, and it was beautifully decorated in blue and white. Although the bedroom was small, it met our needs as we are on the go constantly when we travel and basically just use the room to sleep and shower. The bathroom was a good size, and the bubble bath soap for the claw foot tub was a real treat. Lyn and Ken were both very helpful in communicating with us when we booked and checked in. We wanted to get an early start the next morning for a day trip to Acadia National Park, so we told Lyn we wouldn't be at breakfast which is served at 8:30. We wanted to leave by 7:00. When I looked at the breakfast room, it made me really want to stay and enjoy some of the delicious cooking I had read about on the website. She told us coffee would be out by 6:30, and we told her we didn't drink coffee. So she asked what we liked and had some juice and milk ready for us. She also put out some delicious blueberry muffins, apples, and bananas for us to take with us on our trip. She had cookies out when we checked in, and they were delicious. Upon our return to Atlanta, I emailed Lyn about the beautiful Tiffany lamp in the bedroom as she had told me that one wasn't an antique and I was hoping to buy one like it. She took the time not only to send me the information about where she had gotten it, but she also did some internet research to try and locate one for me. That definitely is over and beyond what I would expect. They both have the caring and people-pleasing personalities for what every bed and breakfast owners should have. We will definitely be back next year to stay at the Swan House!

Thank you for taking the time to write such a great review. You were delightful guests and we look forward to seeing you again next year. Guests like you two make us glad that we're in the B & B business. About that Tiffany lamp . . . . it may take a little while, but my goal is to continue the search and find you one just like it.

I've been traveling to Maine for many years. My experience at the Swan House couldn't be improved. The Kohl's immediately made me feel like family. The rooms are charming and clean, each one different from the others. Every need is graciously taken care of in a timely manner whether it's scheduling a sail or locating a nail salon, restaurant, or hiking trail.

Breakfast is so delicious and filling that you can skip lunch. Besides coffee, tea and juices, today I was served blueberry muffins, almond squares, baked grapefruit, spinach quiche, bacon, and toast. Homemade granola and other cereals were also available.

The inn has a great location, close enough to walk to town but far enough away so that you can't hear the downtown noises.

A snack of tea and cookies is available in the afternoon.

Lyn and Ken are keenly interested in their guests. I am so comfortable at the Swan House that I have chosen to return year after year.

Room Tip: The loft has two queen beds.

It's hard to believe that you've been visiting with us for the past thirteen consecutive years. Time flies when you're having fun, and we always have fun when you're with us. You bring so much positive energy to the other guests at breakfast by sharing your enthusiasm about your travels in Maine. We're very fortunate to have you as a loyal return guest at The Swan House. Thank you so much for the lovely review!

My husband and I had a much needed night away from our kiddo and The Swan House was just perfect. Lyn and Ken are the kindest hosts, and the breakfast and treats they offer were delicious! The peaceful locale has beautiful landscaping and woods surrounding the property, making it feel very private. It is only a very short walk from town with excellent restaurants, shopping, and walks along the waterfront. Lyn and Ken were eager to help us make our short getaway as relaxing as possible, with suggestions for restaurants and local hikes. It was the best deal around. So glad we found it!

We hope that your mini getaway proved to be exactly what you needed. Sometimes all it takes is a day away with a change of scenery and some quality time alone, to refresh and relax.

We LOVE staying at the Swan Inn. This was our fourth visit! The breakfasts are wonderful. Lots of food and different breakfast items everyday. Blueberry pancakes one morning, eggs another. Fresh baked breads and pastries and wonderful homemade granola! The rooms are fresh and clean. Each one a little different theme. We stayed in the Trumpeter this time. It has its own deck to view the wild turkeys out back and skylights to let in the light. The Trumpeter is in the Carriage House in the back - very quiet and private. Great hosts, too!

Room Tip: Easy to book online and to see each room!

We have just spent 2 weeks in Maine and Massachusetts staying at 8 different B&Bs, inns and hotels from $168 to $615 a night and this was far and away the best in terms of value, comfort, cleanliness, location and friendliness of the hosts. The Swan House is like a cosy Swiss chalet in a lovely quiet spot among the trees at the foot of Mt Battie (we climbed it from the B&B before breakfast) yet just minutes away from the centre of Camden (10 mins on foot, 2 by car) but without the traffic noise of other B&Bs. We had a huge beautiful room with 2 queen beds (we had our 21yr old daughter with us), private bathroom, sofa, tables, chairs and fridge, patchwork quilts, fantastically comfortable and space to spread all the stuff from our six heavy bags! Lyn and Ken were absolutely delightful, charming and informative hosts and the breakfasts were the biggest and the best we've ever had. Lyn is a true star in the kitchen - heavenly homemade granola, hot muffins, pancakes, baked eggs, crispy bacon, french toast and luscious fresh fruit salads. And then she packed up extra muffins , biscuits and granola for us to eat on our onward journey. We had only booked for one night but it was so good here that we decided to book again for a night on our way down from Northern Maine a week later and when I went to pay after the first night Ken said "oh, don't worry, you can settle up when you come back next week" so that's what we did - but what trust! Lyn and Ken are a lovely gentle, softly spoken, delightful couple and I have to say that I think the ridiculous comments in some other reviews say much more about the writers' own personality problems than they do about the Swan House - and one in particular suggests he has spent more time in institutions other than B&Bs.
