“Very Small and Not Well Lit”
Reviewed March 1, 2009

Contrary to the previous reveiws, we did not find this motel to be as nice as the rest of the folks seem to. We had a room with two beds, and it sure didn't look like the photo on the Website, which makes the room look very spacious. It was not spacious. All the furniture was very close together and there was nowhere to put your suitcase. We had to step over things once we put our suitcases on the floor and tried to unpack. The bathroom was incredibly small and dimly lit and had no amenities. The room itself was poorly lit. There was no place to sit for comfortably reading a book. As I recall, it was clean. It has easy access because you could just pull your car right up to the door. There was a small breakfast in the morning--nothing special. There was no internet connection. You have to go to the lobby to use your computer, and sometimes it's closed. My husband was about to walk into the lobby to use his computer, and the owner saw him coming, but left and locked the door anyway. The only reason we stayed here is that most of the inns and motels have 2nd stories, and I needed one with just one story. Otherwise, I would have made a different choice. It was quiet, though.

I've been visiting Camden for years but somehow missed this gem of a spot. Up for a weekend visit to the Toboggan Finals, I stopped at the Birchwood Motel and was pleasantly surprised. We got upgraded to an immaculate 2-bedroom apartment with panoramic ocean view (although the cottage looked cute too). Hosts Eric and Jenny made us very welcome and gave us tips for making the most of our stay. The price was right and the location perfect — quiet but still convenient to downtown Camden. A great getaway. (Icing on the cake....free Wi-Fi!).

The Birchwood is a wonderful "mom and pop" motel in Camden, Maine. It is about two miles out from the beautiful town, with a gorgeous ocean view. Eric is a very hard-working host, doing everything to make your stay comfortable and memorable.

The rooms are decently sized, the beds are very comfortable, but most important to me, the rooms are impeccable. A nice breakfast in the cozy lobby gives it that "bed and breakfast" kind of feel. Juice, pastries and fresh fruit are a very nice touch in the morning.

Eric recommended a top notch restaurant on the waterfront in downtown Camden, where he and wife Jenny enjoy dining. As much as I always want to try other restaurants, this one was so good, that my friend and I felt the need to dine there on both nights of our stay in Camden.

A nice bonus is that the Birchwood Motel is about ten miles north of another terrific Maine coastal town called Rockland. Also, it is very close to the beautiful Camden State Park, featuring the most photogenic views atop Mount Battie---a "must" for all visitors and locals alike.

Since this was my first time ever in Camden, I can't compare the Birchwod Motel with any of the other Camden motels, but I certainly felt that the price was fair. If you've never been to Camden, I highly recommend that you give it a try, and stay at the Birchwood Motel. You won't be disappointed! Parking is great, too---right outside your door.

Lovely location, well kept property; quiet, only 16 units. Very reasonable rates.

  • Liked — Very clean, well kept property, flowers blooming, helpful staff. Excellent view of Penobscot Bay.
  • Disliked — Lacked a few standard things...no tissues, no access to ice machine (had to call to get ice) Not enough lighting for reading at night

We had a most enjoyable week at the Birchwood. The owners were friendly and accomodating. It's not posh or plush, but quite comfortable and well worth the price. We'll go back there when we are in the area.

  • Liked — Hospitality from the owners, central location, easy to be there
  • Disliked — no internet access, no "bars" for cell phone (of course, that's what made it so restful)

My mother and I went to Maine on the spur of the moment without reservations. We were in Camden and drove by the Birchwood Motel. The price was much lower than other places we had stopped, so we booked a room. It was great! Plainly furnished but had all the necessities and was very clean. The motel has a lovely long verandah with chairs outside each room. The view is of the ocean with the forest in front of it.

The owners were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast (included in the price of the room) was served in the lobby and consisted of coffee and juice, pastries, and a bowl of fruit salad - a nice bonus! Our room with two double beds was about $85 plus tax, which is cheap in Camden in the summer. We would definitely stay at the Birchwood again.

The Birchwood Motel was a really nice place at a great price.

My husband and I arrived on a Wednesday morning after staying on windjammer for three days. We were hoping to register and take a hot shower in our room. However, I figured we would be turned away since we arrived so early. I was pleasantly surprised when our hostess said our room was ready and we could check-in early. She even gave us extra towels after we told her we had been staying on a boat for several days.

The room was clean and the bed comfortable. The breakfast consisted of fresh fruit salad, danishes, juice, and hot coffee. The view of the bay was beautiful. The hosts were wonderful, very friendly, and informative.

I would definately stay at the Birchwood Motel again.
