Friends from Rockport suggested the Hartstone Inn to celebrate our Anniversary.. I had asked for Veal if possible and they did a wonderful Veal dish. Everything we had was superb and the atmosphere and service were outstanding. It was well worth a trip from Masssachusetts and we will certainly go back again and again. I would love to stay there sometime. We have eaten in Restaurants all over the world and I would compare our meal at the Hartstone with a wonderful place in Paris.

This is one of the best dining places in the area. When you make a reservation (a must in the summer) you can let the person taking the reservaton know if there are foods you can't eat. Menus are posted on the website each week.
The food is excellent - prepared and presented beautifully.
A tip is added so you don't need to add one. Drinks are extra but the dinner is a set price. The service is excellent and Michael always comes out to see how you are enjoying your meal. We eat at The Hartstone on a regular basis and are never disappointed. I highly recomment it.

We went to Hartstone this evening on the basis of the reviews that we’d read. One set menu is not a problem for us (though worth checking beforehand that you can eat what is going to be offered, as another reviewer mentions) and having a prescribed sitting time isn’t either … but I feel strangely deflated after a meal that should have been a highlight of our trip. We arrived at 7pm, sat down by 7:05pm, began eating around 7:20pm and left after 4 courses before 8:45pm. It felt like a military exercise in efficiency with little soul or feeling … and good meals should always have something of that in both the food and the service. The starter was OK – while the smoked tomatoes were good a pairing with the crispy duck (and not with cheddar grits – which don’t readily translate for a non-US customer) it was a bit sloppy and didn’t really waken the taste buds. The salad was good (dressing excellent) though no particular finesse in presentation. The Maine blueberry sorbet was excellent. The main course (of lobster stuffed with crab meat) was good. The dessert of Grand Marnier soufflé was also good though too big and needed to be paired with something else as well as the orange crème anglais. However, it was the service that let it down. While definitely efficient it was too fast – each dish followed without time to savour what had just been eaten. A 20% gratuity was automatically added to the bill, taking away the discretion of the customer to judge and reward the quality of service. As we left, there was no-one to show us out and thank us for coming. As Dale Carnegie (excuse the name drop) observed in “How to Win Friends”, “make people feel important”. We felt like a support act … or is it just that I’m British?

This is a delightful and friendly place with a very accomodating staff. The minute you arrive you feel at home and you could tell that the room had a special touch. The food was excellent and served by the owners. They are hard working people and it comes through in all the details. Excellent value and a perfect location to see Camden which is a storybook town. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and I am sure you will too.

My wife and I recently spent our 30th anniversary dinner at the Hartstone Inn and enjoyed every minute of it -- from the variety foods in our five-course dinner to the attentive and friendly service. The food was, of course, outstanding. But it does help to know ahead of time what is on the menu for the night of your reservations. We opted out of lamb on one night for lobster on another. Check the Inn's website a day or two ahead of time for the menu. Overall -- truly a fantastic dinner. Kudos to Chef Salmon and his staff.
