I scheduled a trip on the Appledore for my family of 7 while vacationing in Camden, Maine and unsure of things to do during our stay. I simply chose the Appledore because the gentleman I spoke to on the phone to get some information was extremely helpful and polite. The boat ride turned out great and everyone enjoyed themselves. Although it did drizzle for a few minutes and get pretty chilly, the crew offered ponchos to everyone which helped (and so did the cash bar!). The crew of men on our trip were very entertaining and gave us some good history on both the boat, and their sailing experiences. I would definitely recommend this ship to anyone who is looking for something fun and different to do when in Camden, Maine.

There are numerous options for sailing schooners in Camden. All are about the same price ($35) and vary in size and age. We chose the Appledore for one reason...they have a cash bar!! This was a ton of fun. The crew were great, particularly J.C. who was like a monkey climbing the masts and mixed STRONG drinks. We did the sunset cruise which was a blast and beautiful. Do it!

This was a $35 cruise that didn't include any food or drink, but did welcome passengers who brought their own, and is the larger boat tour available at that price. We were joined by several friendly passengers and three crewmembers. The captain's comments ran a little heavily toward pointing out the homes of the rich and famous that line Camden's harbor, but this harmless gossip was outweighed by interesting stories about the boat's and its crew's prior adventures. And the experience was well worth having, as the rain held off until just as we were docking. We watched the sun set, mallards paddle around us and porpoises dive in our wake. The air smelled wonderful.

We rode the Appledore 2 (86 foot schooner) out of Camden for a sunset cruise in early July 2007. It had been sprinkling off and on all day, and I was worried that it might rain. Well, it did. It was nice as we left the dock, and cleared up as we returned. But for about an hour and a half, we were *soaked*. But we were prepared for that possibility. We brought hats and raincoats. We wore warm clothing because we thought it might get chilly after sunset out on the water. We never left the bay, so the water wasn't terribly choppy, but they did reach 12 knots, which allowed us to really move, and tilt at a good angle. I enjoyed the thrill, but my husband calls it the "devil boat". I think the other passengers expected much better weather because they were dressed in shorts, t-shirts, and flip flops. They were frozen. The crew only had blankets to offer them (I think they usually just cancel the trip if the weather looks bad). The blankets got soaked. The crew explained some basic sailing as we left the port and one passenger helped raise the sails. We saw some seals. The sunset was actually spectacular. I think the storm clouds helped in that respect. We couldn't see the Curtis Island lighthouse very well though. I think that was due to the sun setting behind it. I would recommend that small children not go on this cruise. They do have a liquor license and a nice selection of beer and wine. I would highly recommend it to couples and boat lovers. If you go for a sunset cruise, dress warmly and regardless, be prepared for rain. I brought a plastic bag to put my digital camera in, just in case.
