Happy to see another restaurant in Bucksport! I really like the atmosphere and feel of the restaurant. Neat decor. Also friendly and enthusiastic staff. The food was a little disappointing- the descriptions on the menu sound amazing, but everything we got was underseasoned, and the vegetables were an afterthought. Next time, I'll just go for drinks.

Just up the road from the Lakeside Inn and it was a style of restaurant (in an older Victorian home) that we like.

The Black Sheep Tavern is relatively new in Bucksport. Jay Feldman, the owner opened last fall for a few months and then reopened this summer and plans to continue serving dinner on Tuesday through Saturday from 5-9 until late fall. This little bar and restaurant is located in an white clapboard house right on Main Street in downtown Bucksport. The two front rooms that face the street have been converted into a nicely decorated six stool bar and 20 seat dining room separated by pocket doors.
The regular menu, which you can see on their website, has a small but varied selection of entrees that includes pork tenderloin, baked haddock, seafood pasta, an Angus burger and Maryland crab cakes. They also have nightly specials. We went on a Wednesday evening. There were several people at the bar but we were the only customers in the dining room for the first 20 minutes. We were warmly greeted by the owner. The waitress was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the menu selections. Service was excellent.
We decided not to have the fresh lobster, wilted spinach and tomato appetizer special...although it sounded wonderful . Instead we each had a small house salad which can be added to any entree for just $2. The greens and vegetables were local and the creamy homemade dressings were delicious. I had the crab cakes and my husband had the baked haddock. Both were served with mashed red potato and green beans. The entrees were fresh and well prepared. Spicing was interesting but a bit timid. Portions were small but adequate and left us room to split a dessert. Our choice was a very decadent triple chocolate cake.
The Black Sheep Tavern is a great new option for more upscale dining in this riverside mill town. Prices are fair for the quality of food and level of service provided. We look forward to visiting again to try some of the other menu choices.

My husband and I like to go to at least one upscale place while on vacation and this was our pick this trip. The decor is very nice and very comfortable. The food was a bit on the pricey side and my husband was disappointed at the one small crab cake he got for an appetizer. We are not big eaters like some people we know but this was a really small portion even for us. The table and silverware and plates and presentation were great and the food wasn't the best we have had but everything we ordered was very good. The menu is not extensive but I would guess they prefer to keep it that way so that they can concentrate on quality. The waiter was great but hovered a bit too much. All in all, it was a pleasant evening and we definitely will go back.
