“A gem!”
Reviewed May 30, 2012

Just got back from an east-coast road trip (tail end of our honeymoon) that involved an overnight at the Williams Pond Lodge. My husband and I had only planned one night in Bucksport, as it was a midpoint on our drive back to Toronto. We both wished we could have stayed longer!! Williams Pond Lodge was an unexpected gem! Between David's incredible hospitality (and determination to fatten us up) and the beauty of the location, it was a real treat. Comfortable, extremely clean rooms with a gorgeous view of the pond that I was able to kayak the next day. Clearly, a lot of thought was put into the creation of the Lodge. Our experience convinced us that we need to come back to Maine, plan a longer stay and explore the region when we have more time!

I can't imagine ever staying at any other B&B in the Bar Harbor region after the wonderful experience we had here at Williams Pond Lodge. Firstly, the location is gorgeous. Williams Pond is so peaceful - the lodge includes a large part of the surrounding woods and the primary sounds are woodpeckers and cheerful songbirds that gather by the water. Although the owners have committed to solar energy sources and natural products, you will never feel like your comfort was compromised. The bed was pure luxury, the rooms were absolutely immaculate and you could see how much love and care the owners put into even the smallest details of the interior design. (e.g. wood carved moose shower curtain rings, hand drawn faux-birch paper light switches!) There are so many charming features in both buildings. Loved the gas fireplaces. There is perfect sound insulation between the two cottage rooms (treehaven & cobb hill), an interior hallway actually separates them. The bathroom is flooded by light from the ceiling window, and the shower is quite spacious and has a seated area. The only weak spot was the shower head - water pressure was good but limited for a large stall. There was natural soap provided (but no shampoo).
The guests are welcomed to enjoy any of the collection of kayaks (singles & doubles), row boats and canoes - lifejackets are provided, even in kids sizes! We spent hours quietly kayaking around the pond, watching the sunset... it was blissful.
Now one of the best parts - the owners and their exceptional hospitality. David and Dominick are two of the most genuine and kindest people we've met. It was an absolute pleasure to meet and chat together as we sampled David's sumptuous desserts - I'm not even a very extroverted person but they immediately made us both feel welcomed as though we were old friends. David's culinary skills are at a professional level, and everything we ate was outstanding, from smoked Maine trout with sour cream and dill, to homemade mango smoothies, to fruit salads with hand picked Maine wild berries, gourmet cakes, handmade(!) clotted cream. It was overwhelming how much delicious food he baked everyday. They were both also gracious enough to invite us back in each evening for tea and dessert. It was well above and beyond most high-end B&B experiences.
The surrounding woods were also a rare pleasure. We were informed that the grounds provided some of the most untouched native flora in New England. If you are interested in what species populated American forests centuries ago, this is the place to discover it. The location is also notable among birders for a nearby heronry. But this place is for everybody, whether you're interested in nature or just some peace and solitude.
I went there with both my partner and family members and those who thought they were too city-oriented to enjoy the location, actually left wishing they could have stayed longer. We look forward to going back. My partner still can't stop talking about David's shortbread cookies....

Room Tip: Treehaven is just slightly more private than Cobb Hill since its side windows are over the woods, wh...

We were looking for peace and solitude and found it in this B&B. A great, remote spot in the woods and off the grid where you can listen to the calls of the loons or take a leisurely kayak paddle on the peaceful, quiet lake. The rooms are super clean with an obvious eye to detail.
David's breakfast's and desserts are second to none. He is a most congenial and gracious host
with your comfort uppermost on his mind.
It was a great, relaxing weekend and we'll do it again!

Room Tip: All 3 rooms are well appointed and beautiful. The room in the main lodge has a great view of the lak...

Williams Pond Lodge is a great experience. My husband and I have stayed at all different types of B and B's but this isn't your "normal" B and B. It is really a "boutique", rustic cabin with all the necessary amenities. We arrived late, in the dark and the dirt road was difficult to navigate. In the daylight it was easy. David was there to meet us. He is very caring about his visitors, and he takes great pride in the Lodge. He made breakfast each of the three mornings we were there and each was delicious. Scones, granola, fresh fruit and yogurt, waffles, German pancakes, smoked trout, sausage, bacon...

The pond is beautiful. Wish we saw more wildlife. Because it was early April, there was not much open when we travelled to Acadia and Bar Harbor. It rained on and off for the time we were there. Needless to say, we were bummed out. We were there more for sight seeing and shopping and travelling through Maine, but if kayaking is your thing, and the weather was more cooperative, it would have been a whole different experience.

Would like to go back during the warmer weather. It is a great location. Easy travel to Belfast, Searsport and Camden to the south and Acadia and Bar Harbor, and Bangor to the north and east. We even ventured a little further to Moosehead Lake...snowed and we saw two moose on Easter Sunday!

Room Tip: Would liked to have stayed in one of the upper rooms. The cabin room is downstairs (basement) with a...

Wife and I stayed at the Williams Pond Lodge two nights April 4th and 5th. Like all the other guests David goes out of his way to treat you not just as a guest but as a friend. He is very witty and has a great sense of humor, very upbeat guy for sure. Breakfast was wonderful; fresh fruit, yogurt and homemade granola followed by baked German pancake and smoked trout and lots of coffee. And a selection of scones, baked breads and other good stuff. No need to worry about having lunch. Wife and I hiked for the day and didn't need any lunch and then stopped for dinner at a restaurant David recommended in Ellsworth which was delicious. Beautiful setting, very serene and immaculate rooms and bathrooms. We stayed in the treehouse room and loved it. Had a gas stove to take over the morning chill and large bathroom with a skylight over the shower. We're looking forward to another trip maybe in late May. Location is very central to Belfast, Ellsworth, Blue Hill and Acadia so works well as a base to explore. You won't find any place better in the area I'm sure so don't waste your time looking.

Room Tip: Treehouse room is great but all rooms look very nice.

It's hard to recall a place where the experience gets any better than this. Let's start with David, the host. He's funny, welcoming, gracious, and a wicked good bagpiper (upon request). He bakes the most amazing cookies and breads, and breakfast is always delicious. Lemon ricotta pancakes with blueberry sauce, sausage, and fresh fruit comes to mind, but we are never disappointed and certainly never hungry. There is always a pretty tin box of homemade shortbread in the room, treating us when we arrive. The rooms are immaculately clean, tastefully decorated in Maine camp style with a cozy gas stove to add ambiance. The location is beautiful and well off the beaten path. We only travel 45 minutes to get to Williams Pond, but it's a true retreat when we arrive. Always, always, we enjoy laughing and sharing stories with other guests as David skillfully facilitates great interactions for those who choose to join in. More than an innkeeper, he becomes your friend and favorite family member before you go.

This is our third trip in three years to Williams Pond Lodge. We love the guest rooms, the views, the idyllic pond side setting, but most of all the host David. His breakfasts are legendary. He is always thinking about his guests and is very accommodating. He knows the area well and can send you in any direction you want to go, depending on the experience you're looking for.

We have been here as a couple and also have rented out all the rooms with family members. It's great either way. With only 3 guest rooms and 21+ acres, it makes a wonderful private retreat.
