Let me start by saying I have never been to Maine before, so I was not sure of what to expect.

Originally, the whole concept of going to Maine began with a belated wedding anniversary present for my wife. Ultimately, I was looking for a trip that was within the New England region (less than a tank of gas away) and for a place to stay where we could bring our "four-legged son" Kirby. For every other vacation we have needed to board our beloved furry family member, and we have always wanted to take a trip where we could bring the "entire" family. These criteria eliminated quite a few hotels. Luckily, we discovered the Captain Daniel Stone Inn in Brunswick, ME.

Apparently the hotel has come under new management, but based upon recent reviews (thanks Trip Advisor!) the new owners have only seemed to improve upon the already fantastic reputation it has maintained for several years. I called a few weeks out and reserved a room with a King size bed with a location request for the front side of the building (based upon a suggestion from a previous traveler; thanks again Trip Advisor!), and received a prompt email confirmation which was nice.

On the day of the trip we got a late start, which caused us to have a fairly late ETA ~ 9 p.m. We called ahead and were pleased to find out that depending upon our time of arrival, we would be able to either have our order waiting for us at the restaurant on site (10 Water St.), or available as "take out" which would be waiting for us in our room. I used to travel quite a bit (approximately 6 months out of the year) for work, and I have found that "boutique hotels" are usually a mixed bag. However, I must say that the level of customer service before we even reached the hotel far exceeded many of my experiences at some of the higher end "chain hotels" where I am usually treated pretty well because of my "platinum status". It seemed like every guest at this hotel is treated like they have "status" no matter how much money they spend at hotels on an annual basis.

Upon our arrival, we were guided into the hotel restaurant as the front desk staff volunteered to watch Kirby for us while we ate. Apparently the new owners had only recently taken over operations within the past month or so, and becoming "pet friendly" was one of their new policies. We quickly found out that Kirby was the first official "pet guest", and it was evident that everyone was super excited to have him there. My wife and I were very happy to find out that there were a bunch of animal lovers on staff, and we immediately felt that this was a warm and welcoming environment for our furry boy. It almost seems needless to say that dinner was delicious, and the service was on par with the rest of the amazing hospitality we had received thus far.

The next morning we woke up, grabbed a quick bite at the complimentary continental breakfast, went to the front desk and we were directed to a fantastic dog park that was a 5-10 minute walk down Water St. along the river. The park was a really nice "off-leash" fenced property with plenty of space for Kirby to run around. In addition, the facility also provided bags and trash cans so we could clean up after our guy if necessary. It was Saturday morning and it seemed like we arrived at "doggy happy hour" because there were plenty of new friends for Kirby to play with. We also noticed a paved running/biking trail that continued down along the river which appeared to go on for a few miles.

Afterward, we went back to the hotel and the front desk staff offered a few suggestions on places to go in the area, one being the LL Bean flagship store in Freeport which was a short drive away. We were also offered a few dining suggestions for the evening as well.

The next morning my wife and I decided to try the new brunch menu in the hotel restaurant and we were happy we did. We enjoyed another fantastic meal before packing up and heading home. Sufficed to say, the whole family had a great time, and we are already thinking about another trip back to Maine and plan to stay here again.

Room Tip: We followed other traveler's advice and opted for a room on the front side of the hotel. Nice view and no road noise.

Dear Jeff S.,

Thank you for finding us on Tripadvisor and taking the time to share your comments. We were thrilled to read that we provided you with a first rate experience. We also love to hear that our staff made such an impression on your stay. They help make the Inn and No. 10 Water the special place it is.

Your compliments on the “fantastic meals” you had in our restaurant are greatly appreciated and we’re glad you were able to enjoy our new weekend brunch. Our Executive Chef will be happy to read your wonderful review.

You were right when you said we were excited to welcome Kirby! It was a pleasure having him as our first “furry guest”. The new dog park has been a great addition to Water Street and we hope Kirby will be back to enjoy it again soon.

Thank you again for choosing to stay with us. We look forward to your next visit to Brunswick!

We stayed 4 nights at the Captain Daniel Stone Inn. It is a lovely hotel with lots of history and atmosphere but has all the modern conveniences. Our suite was spacious and well appointed. The bed was extremely comfortable. Staff were all friendly and helpful. There is plenty of parking and the hotel is only a few minutes walk to Maine St. We explored Brunswick and also found it a good base to tour around Maine as the Harpswell area, Bath and Boothbay are within easy driving reach. The hotel restaurant No 10 Water has delicious food and the bar is great as well. A very pleasant place to say in Brunswick.

I stayed at this Inn during my recent visit to parent's weekend at Bowdoin College. While it is a bit of a further walk to the campus, it is still in walking distance, and near downtown. The staff is friendly. The building is very quaint in a New England sort of way, and very nicely remodeled. The bedding, towels, robes, etc, were very high quality, and the 4 gourmet chocolates on the pillow a nice touch. I did not dine at the restaurant this trip, but there it is very cozy, and seems to keep a fire going in the fireplace.

Dear Carol M,

We really appreciate your choosing to stay with us during your trip to Brunswick for Parent’s Weekend. The Inn was thoughtfully renovated to be just what you described and we’re glad you felt it was quaint. We also know how important the small luxuries are away from home and we’re happy to hear you enjoyed the in-room amenities.

The cozy spot next to the fire in our restaurant is a guest favorite and we hope you’ll get the chance to enjoy it on your next visit!

We had a lovely stay at the Captain Daniel Stone Inn. The rooms were cozy and the bed extremely comfortable. The staff at the front desk was friendly and helpful. The location is walking distance to the restaurants and bars on Maine Street (check out the Broadway Deli for a fab breakfast). My one comment was that the restaurant closed pretty early - 8:30 p.m. Granted we stayed on a Sunday night, but after coming back after dinner had to go out again to watch the Sox game and have a beer. Nonetheless, it is a great hotel and one I would certainly recommend if you were traveling in Brunswick.

Stayed for one night, December 2012, I was 9 months pregnant and the staff were all very accomidating. Beautiful hotel, grounds, restaurant, etc. Room was corner wth queen, very comfortable bed, even for a pregnant woman, beautiful bathroom with clawfoot tub. We stayed with a groupon deal, no problems at all with it, ate at the onsite restaurant for dinner, atmosphere was great, food was even better. Brunswick is a great town too!
