“Beautiful space, fabulous food, and genuine staff!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2013 via mobile

I've been to Frontier a few times now and it is top of my list for southern Maine lunching and dining. The views over the river are spectacular, and make dishes like fish tacos, butternut squash ravioli, and veggie burgers slide down with extra enjoyment. The staff is always friendly, informed, and positive. Frontier is a gem and should not be missed when you are in Brunswick.

“Always on the list when in the Portland area”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2013

The Frontier has become our new "go-to" lunch restaurant when visiting our family in Portland. Have sampled many items on their menu and not one regret. My recent favorite is their version of a grilled cheese, the Mozz. I don't often eat this decadent sandwich, but the Mozz is well worth the indulgence. Whoever came up with the idea, particularly using the basil pesto, gets my thanks. My husband usually eats the jerk chicken tacos and says the mango salsa is terrific. This winter we've made a habit of also visiting the indoor Farmer's market which is in the same mill building. Makes for a great day out. And the market always has a wonderful selection of local produce, cheeses and miscellaneous goodies.

“Hippy Dippy Vegan Goodness”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2013

The Frontier is a unique, eccentric, artsy, hippie loving good time. It is also rather hard to find if your not familiar with it. Its Located in an old mill shared by a few other business's in downtown Brunswick and if you use the front entrance to the building then you need to walk down a few hallways past office spaces and other random rooms before you find the entrance. Once that adventure ends a new one begins when you enter the cafe. One part restaurant, one part movie theater. The restaurant is actually pretty large but still has a nice personal feel. The menu, much like the rest of the place is unique and varied. It features many vegan and vegetarian dishes. One such dish was the Vegan Nachos that Simone and I shared for our appetizer. The Nachos were served with Blue Corn Tortilla Chips with a mildly sweet and spicy Mango salsa, re-fried black beans and a chunky Cashew "cheese". The Cashew cheese tasted more like Cashews then cheese with hints of roasted red peppers. The "cheese " definitely did not melt....however it was still a oddly tasty dish but not your traditional nachos, and I'm sure it was much healthier then the local taco bell. After the Nachos I decided to have some real meat and ordered the Sweet Rachel sandwich with fresh roasted Turkey, sharp Gruyere Cheese, house made creamy slaw, sliced Granny Smith apples and Russian dressing on Sourdough. It was very good, the bread was lightly toasted, the warm turkey was cut thick and the cool slaw and apples added the perfect sweetness. The sandwich was served with fresh cut shoestring fries. The fries were not very crispy but were respectable. Simone stayed with the Vegan theme and had a unique earthy Vegan Harvest "Meatloaf". Tempe and Lentils are mixed with Polenta to make this and it came in the shape of a cupcake. It had the consistency of a traditional meatloaf and was good but tasted heavily of cloves and allspice..It was drizzled with a sweet maple curry flavored glaze and served with a bright purple beet and celeriac root mash. For dessert we had went with two choices. Homemade chocolate truffles ( made by the wife of one of the cooks our waiter told us) and Carrot Cake. The cake was just okay, It was dense but the cream cheese frosting was not as sweet as I would have liked. The truffles were very good, rich and creamy and delicious. Although they are not normally on the menu I'm glad we had the opportunity to get them. So the reviews here are mixed. I loved the atmosphere, the Nachos were strangely enjoyable, the sandwich was very good, the fries were underwhelming, the loaf over seasoned and dessert was good but not excellent. Overall I'm going to give this three stars. I probably would try this again, especially in the summer to enjoy the outdoor patio and perhaps a after dinner movie and I may even have the Vegan not quite cheese Nachos a second time

“Great Ambient and Amazing Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013 via mobile

A restaurant, a bar, a cafe , a movie theater and a gallery under The same roof. Beautiful decor and view to the water electric station. Excellent beer selection. Try the allagash, a Belgium white beer locally produce in Portland.
Lots of vegetarian options! The nachos as simply amazing! The hummus is also very good. The marketplates are a bit overprice for what you get.
Fridays and Saturdays they only accept a limited amount of reservations, the rest is for walk-ins. Busy hours between 5:30 to 8:00.
Service is very good!

“Interesting place, fun menu”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 13, 2013

Beautiful building - renovated mill overlooking the river. The menu was interesting, but not quite top notch. Started with a cup of lamb stew - tasted like a good beef stew - no lamb flavor at all, but a nice hearty dish. Same sort of issues with the sandwich - a Rachel with turkey, gruyere, apple - should have been yummy - nicely grilled sourdough bread, but the flavors were drowned out by too much dressing - all I tasted was Russian dressing. I'd definitely go back - good hearty food, lots of gluten-free and veggie selections, nice atmosphere ... but a couple of changes here and there could make it really special.
