“Glad I Went”
Reviewed September 9, 2012

I went to Richard's this past Friday night with my husband, niece and brother-in-law. I was a little hesitant to go to a German restaurant because we had gone to Germany a few years ago and I wasn't really crazy about the food we ate, especially sauerkraut... Not a fan.

I didn't have to worry. Richard's has a "continental American" menu as well as a German menu. I did order off of the German menu but there was no sauerkraut in sight - whew. I had a lovely chicken breast marinated in wine with tarragon and mushrooms. The noodles were very good as well and the bread is very fresh and flaky. In addition to rolls, they offer you pretzels and mustard, which is a nice treat. My niece had the ravioli special of the night, and she is not a big eater, so the rest of us were happy to sample from her plate - it was really good.

The portions were just the right size, and the service was attentive, but not rushed. I'm surprised it has taken us so long to try this restaurant, given how good it is, and we would go back.

“Authentic German but bring a coat”
Reviewed August 27, 2012 via mobile

As one who has spent much of the past 20 years in Germany this was a home from home. Good German food, beer and wine. Cheerful service. That it was very busy on a Monday night says it all.

“Great authentic German food in a relaxed but attractive dining room.”
Reviewed August 27, 2012 via mobile

We lived in Germany for a few years so were interested in a German restaurant in Maine. The story (moved from Mannheim in 68; married a local) was charming but the food was even better! Herring in sour cream not to be missed, if you like that kind of thing. Nice fresh beer and very Germanic wine list. But best of all the currywurst was spot on. Only one other place weve tried in America gets it right (blaue gans, in TriBeCa, if you want to know). Worth a stop for that alone!

“More or Less”
Reviewed August 21, 2012

We did not have reservations to this establishment. The proprietor seemed pained that we showed up and dared not to have a reservation. Empty tables were visible but he insisted they were taken. We were seated at a small table which was fine with us. The server was very pleasant. She offered helpful suggestions as to what certain menu items were. The puff pastry with scallops/shrimp was disappointing. It was empty with a couple small scallops/shrimp on top, floating in a bed of what tasted like cheese sauce. On the other hand, the mushroom soup was good. The schnitzel was very good but the goulash disappointed. The bread/pretzel basket was good. We found the whole experience just average.

“Guten Appetit!”
Reviewed August 21, 2012

"Guten appetit" or "enjoy your meal" is a fitting server's remark when your plates are placed on the table at Richard's. We eat often in Brunswick, which has a number of good restaurants, and Richard's is among our top three. If you are a fan of German cuisine, Richard and his chef sons deliver the goods from schnitzels to spaetzle to sausages to red cabbage. It is authentic German cuisine complimented by a wide variety of German beers and wines. However, it is not exclusively German as they also serve some fine American dishes as well. Owner and chef Richard often greets and checks in with his customers. The servers are courteous, knowledgeable, and efficient without being intrusive. The kitchen does not keep you tapping your foot wondering when you'll be served.
Richard's is right on Maine St., which is the main street in Brunswick, and parking is in the rear. So, if you are visiting Bowdoin College or the Joshua Chamberlain museum, to name just two of Brunswick's attractions, pop into Richard's for lunch or dinner. Just as your meal begins with "guten appetit", you will be saying "danke" when finished.
