“Really fun fancy dim sum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2014

My husband and I shared a fantastic meal at Tau Yuan. Everything is small plates and you order a bunch and then share, and everything was absolutely delicious, even the things I didn't really want to try. Yum yum yum. I had the Japanese citrus custard for dessert and it was one of the best desserts I've had in a while. Light and tasty and just delightful. Dinner here is an event; come with a group and try everything on the menu!

“Touring China from Brunswick, Maine”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2014

During the winter of 2014 the restaurant featured family-style Sunday meals which offered an informed introduction into regional cuisines of China. Our first visits were in April for the Shaanxi and Yunnan menus. The Yunnan selection was more successful than the Shaanxi, perhaps more in reflection of the nature of the noodle heavy Shaanxi cuisine than as a consequence of Tao Yuan preparation. Each meal consisted of 9 or 10 offerings in four categories: cold, dim sum, hot and dessert. The price was $38 per person, which seemed quite fair for the quality and quantity.

Highlights of the Yunnan dinner included: a superb charred eggplant and tomato starter, fabulous potato pancakes, and sautéed king trumpet mushrooms. The crossing the bridge noodles, a famous Yunnan dish, were not as satisfying as those we had had a year before in Kunming, but that was the only dish of the evening with which we could find fault.

For the Shaanxi night we liked the rice noodles with celtuce and chili, the rou jai mo (tomato, beet and ground beef sliders), and the long life noodles with tomato and egg.

The staff was courteous, and the owner, Cara Stadler, was charming, informative, and impressively knowledgeable. The room is pleasant, comfortable and unobtrusively decorated.

The regular menu, which we have yet to try, is pan-Asian based. Ms. Stadler indicated that she puts her own twists on traditional dishes. Her resumé includes a private dining restaurant in Beijing as well as jobs at Laris on The Bund in Shanghai and Gordon Ramsay's restaurant at Versailles.

“BEST NEW CHEFS IN THE COUNTRY?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2014

WOW! Indeed Cara Stadler is and hearty congratulations to you and the entire staff at Tao Yuan - including the wonderful and charming front-of-house-manager Emma Hamilton - as voted one of Food & Wine Magazine's Top Ten Best New Chefs 2014!!!

I can second that after yet another splendid meal this evening with my wife and a very dear friend (in her words, "a virgin to Tao Yuan") who couldn't stop raving about our chef's choice tasting meal.

One word describes it all: EXQUISITE!

Congratulations.

“Delicious!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2014 via mobile

This is our second time dining at Tao Yaun and both experiences were wonderful. We came for a Sunday night family style meal highlighting Sichuan cuisine - amazing. A nice touch, the chef/owner has stopped by every table at the end of evening each time we've been in. She clearly cares to know if diners enjoyed their meals. Of course we will be back.

“Fusion of flavor”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2014

We are fortunate to have many fine restaurants in Brunswick Maine. Perhaps our finest is Tao. The chef provides a spectacular variety of flavors both new and familiar that keep my wife an I returning again and again. This is small plate preparation of quality taste and presentation. It is not all you can eat Chinese buffet. I can't state a favorite because the menu changes constantly.
I just have to echo the other reviews by stating if your a "foody", this is your place.
