Small but worth the trip after waiting in short line. Food is made from scratch so be patient. Will return on next trip to Maine.

Had my birthday dinner here with friends one of them Greek. Lovely dinner great waitress. Definitely need a reservation. Will be back.
We just bought a getaway place in a nearby town and started exploring Brunswick's food culture. The options include a lot of inexpensive ethnic restaurants that seemed more tuned to the budgets and tastes of college students. Without a reservation we stepped into Trattoria Athena, a cozy little oasis of rough wood tables, a 4 seat bar, and maybe 30 seats all total. We managed two seats at the bar (this was Parents Weekend at Bowdoin, so the town was hopping) and were warmly greeted by Ashley, who walked us through the Greek and Italian menu. While the two owners have French and Irish names, one had a Greek mom and the other an Italian and they have put a fresh contemporary spin on the dishes of their upbringing. Thre is so much mediocre Greek and Italian food out there, usually making up for shortcomings through portion size. This was refreshingly the opposite. The kitchen uses a lot of fresh, local products, and the flavors were more nuanced and interesting. For example, a ravioli that was filled with beets and ricotta and flavored with cinammon and nutmeg -- a lovely fall take on the dish. The staff is friendly, made great wine suggestions (especially on the Greek side of the list, largely unfamiliar territory for us), and made us feel like old friends. So one weekend into our new Maine adventure, we have found our go-to place.
My boyfriend and I dined here on October 23rd, a Wednesday night. We sat at the bar and asked the bartender about some of the wines, she was wonderfully well informed and made perfect suggestions. Everything on the menu sounded awesome so we decided to get a few different things to share. The owner then came out to talk to us and see if he could help us chose. It was awesome to see an owner so passionate and smart about the food and the restaurant as a whole. We tried a few of the things he suggested and everything that came out was perfectly cooked and balanced. We asked more questions about dessert and drinks and had such a fun time with the staff. Eating out should be an experience and this restaurant as a whole provides a fabulous experience. And at the end of the meal we realized that we hadn't put salt or pepper on any of the dishes and we hadn't even thought to. We will be back very often and would recommend it to anyone.
Superlative and innovative cuisine with very personable service. Perfectly integrated Italian and Greek menu. Fresh local ingredients, intense but nuanced flavors. I would go here often if I lived in the area.
