“Most amazing fish!”
Reviewed February 19, 2013 via mobile

The authentic Kerala dishes are the best here. Especially the fish they make in banana leaves. Thali meals are amazing. Worth tickling your taste buds with appam and stew. One star missing, as the service was not as quick as one expects to be. But, food is always good.

Sad to say, you have to look closely to see hints of what was grand.

Room: Overall this property is just tired and in need of a top to bottom face lift. We stayed on the second floor facing MG road in a large spacious room, triple glazed windows and stone quiet. The decor is right out of 1965 and just has this look of being worn out. Our room smelled of mold, and after 2 nights so did all of our clothing. The charge for WiFi was just ridiculous. Check in or out to early or late and there is a fee. The mini bar in our room held water bottles that were refilled it was easy to tell because the lids did not match the labels and one was scotch taped on! Our TV system had 2 boxes, 3 remotes and no instructions.

Restaurant: Great food!, when it came. I understand Indian time but this was crazy. We were part of a group of 12 that ate our evening meal there twice. The waiters are not a lot of help with the menu and no meal was with out several orders that were just plain wrong. There does not seam to be any rhyme or reason as to how the food arrives. It just seams to show up at random, and in bits and pieces. Part of your meal would arrive with someone else's main course. Having sad that it tastes great! The breakfast buffet is well worth the money and no waiting. Coffee in the morning appears to be self serve and most of the waiters were all trying to learn how to make an omelet.

The location of the hotel was very centeraly located, we stayed here for 2 nights the rooms were comfortable & nice.
The staff was also very helpful & food was the most delicious , we were told by many to have dinner at this place & they were also not wrong on that. The food was extra special especially the non-veg , we loved it & would love to eat again at this place.

We were also upgraded free of cost from normal room to suite room for no extra cost.

Room Tip: Suite room was quite good with good outside road view...

Sometimes in India, you just want to escape. Could be from the heat, the dirt, even from some people!
The Grand is a place to do so. Comfortable accommodation and good food. Not too expensive and situated in the centre of Ernakulum on MG Road.
40 minutes drive from the airport (32 KM) and five minutes from Ernakulum Junction Railway Station.
The restaurant can be busy, get in there early or the local lunch crowd will fill it up. I believe there is a good bar but I was unable to sample it!
If you want to take the local ferry over to Fort Cochin, 15 minutes walk or 5 minutes in a rickshaw.

We stayed in the Grand for 9 nights in january. The rooms were spacious and nice bathroom. The beds and pillows were the best we have ever slept in in India. The foyer is drab and in desperate need for comfy armchairs. We found that the food in the restaurant was good, but the service slow. unless your the hotel managers friend. He was the most arrogant man.The rest of the staff were fine.It is a good location, with the bus and the railway stations only minutes away. Also many tuk tuks outside. They are cheap.Dont get ripped off by the in house travel desk.HES on a big cut.Every staff member wants to be tipped.Try not to fall for it.All in all ,nice place.

Room Tip: Ask for room with windows that open.

The Art Deco style of this hotel is almost trendy although some of the room furnishings are a little worn. The restaurant is stylish and obviously a favourite venue for locals as well as residents but I found it a little over-priced and half of the items on the menu weren't available. Hotel staff are courteous and helpful.

The drawback for me was no 24-hour check-in/check-out so I had to pay extra for late check-out - this could be a disadvantage for others too, especially as this hotel is convenient for the station and closer to the airport than the Fort Cochin options. Also the wi-fi wasn't working and is expensive even when it is working.

In total, this only just scrapes in at a '4-dot' rating for me - it would be 3.5 if I could - above average and charming style but could improve.

I stayed here for 5/6 days from 23rd January 2013.
The food in the Restaurant is very good. There is a wide choice of local and European dishes. Breakfasts are served barely warm but I think that is a local custom. One of my few complaints is the attitude of the younger waiters. I was twice delivered the wrong item. Each time there was no apology and once there was no replacement.
At reception it was again the younger staff who appeared disinterested and who would quickly answer "I don't know" rather than seek an answer to an enquiry. The more experienced staff were efficient and friendly.
The tourist desk was seldom manned.
My room was vast and kept spotlessly clean.
Laundry service - first class.
I was in the bar a couple of times and found the atmosphere just too dark.
The ancillary staff were particularly helpful and friendly.
There were no brochures for local attractions and the official tourist office is some distance away. It is worth a visit, however, because the officer there is very knowledgeable and helpful.
All in all I had an enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: This could be a good centre for touring the surrounding area. If forced to categorise it I would p...
