“My Maroma”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2014

We just returned from 8 days 7 nights - It was amazing. The beach was gorgeous. The water was perfect. We read many reviews before we left and went with a very open mind. We too had some issues with our reservation. We booked a Privilege Superior Ocean Room and when we checked in we had a courtyard view. When we met w/our Apple Rep he spoke with the front desk and they said the soonest they could move us was day 4 of our stay and offered us a Lobster dinner & couples message for the inconvenience. Long story short we were move to a Suite on day 3 and it was awesome. The staff was great, the food was way above average for an AI resort, the drinks were not weak, the grounds were beautiful and very clean. Tried all the restaurants except for the Italian and enjoyed all of them, even returned to the steak house twice. My husband was thrilled that he was not required to wear long pants and no reservations were needed (first come first serve) so we could decide last minute where we wanted to eat. Our favorite place for breakfast & lunch was at the Terrace (Privilege only). In a pinch even Room Service was amazing. WiFi throughout also another plus. The only complaints I have are they really don't explain anything at check in. We were lucky enough to meet some people who had been there a few days and told us the ins & outs. If you want tiki hut on the beach be prepared to go down between 6 - 6:30 a.m. The beach bar was located between the beach & pool but easy access and very quick. Several times a day they would have staff bring drinks around the beach and take orders - very nice unexpected service. Lots of activities at the pool and on the beach but they are not pushy if you choose not to participate. We were very pleasantly surprised and can't wait to return.

Room Tip: If you book and pay for a Privilege Superior Ocean Room, which I strongly suggest, make sure that is...

The place is really pretty. The beach is nice. The staff are nice. Our check in was a nightmare. We had privileged check and it was bad. Had a room with a wall on the balcony that you could not see over. Food was average. I would go back to this only if the price was really good. We paid $155 a nite which was not bad but would spend a little extra for a better resort. We have stayed at catalonia royal tulum and it's much nicer .

What a beautiful place and a super great value! The powder white sand was to die for! The grounds were so beautiful! Everything was clean and well kept. The open air lobby was so relaxing and beautiful so we spent time in the evenings and our last few hours before our shuttle arrived to take us back to the airport there. Very nice!

The staff were all very friendly although at times a bit challenging to communicate, it certainly gave us more appreciation for others coming into our country not knowing the language. The bartenders at each location were amazing!

Be prepared to walk! Although tiring at times, we looked at it as an opportunity to exercise off our meal and beverages. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet so got a chance to walk a way after eating too much. The drinks were very tasty and they would add alcohol if you asked. I found that if you didn't drink rather quickly and before it "unfrose" it didn't taste as well so I just drank those faster.

We were in building 6, closer to the beach and restaurants which was good but far from the lobby, shows and buffet. Our favorite food was the Mexican restaurant hands down. Best guac ever!

It was difficult finding covered seats on the beach unless you got there super early in the morning but by mid day a few spots started opening up so not too bad. The entertainments staff were fun! A few members of our group participated in a beer drinking contest against the staff which was really fun, the shows were decent and the beach dance party was a blast! Who knew dancing in the sand was so hard to do yet so much fun!

My wife and I visited this resort in March 2014.

We paid extra for the exclusive options, and we went to the smaller check-in office closer to the beach side of the property. As others have indicated, it is a long walk down a really pretty jungled path to get from the front lobby and buffet area to the pools, shops, and restaurants near the beach. Since we are walkers anyway, we really enjoyed the walk and our room was in building 4 which is close to the beach.

The room was very clean and comfortable and the bed was nice as well. The wifi at the resort was great; we had good coverage not only in our room, but even at the pool! I made an IP call to the US from my phone using the wifi while laying on a pool lounger!

We are not drinkers and ate mostly in the buffet. Not being foodies, it doesn't take a lot to satisfy us with the food. We found the buffet to be about average for an AI - not as poor as the Rui Santa Fe in Cabo, which was probably the worst, and not as good as the Iberostar Bavaro in Punta Cana, which we found to be among the best.

The staff were uniformly pleasant and provided good service, although one day they forgot to do our room, so we had to ask for spare towels. The shops were decent. The grounds were nicely maintained and the garden areas in the courtyard of our building were particularly pretty. The pools were clean and very nice. The entertainment staff was a little bit anemic compared to the Iberostars we have stayed at.

The beach was very nice with a good palapa selection as compared to some other resorts that have few palapas - this is for the privileged side, the regular side had no palapas, only tree shade. This alone would be enough for us to choose the privileged option since it wasn't much more expensive.

The beach was really nice and there were many large angel-type fish in the water - we even found them to be a big aggressive at times, brushing our legs as if they new humans might have food to feed them.

We took long walks on the beach in both directions. To the right are a couple of resorts, then a walk to a point with a tall metal tower that is slowly being reclaimed by the sea. It seems like there is some sort of park that way since there were trash cans along the beach once past the tower. To the left the beach gets very dirty with debris and trash which is unfortunate. There's an abandoned resort that didn't appear to have ever been finished - I'm guessing it might have been getting started when the economy crashed and it was just abandoned. It looked like it has been many years since it was touched by anybody.

There were lots of coatis on the path to the buffet and it was very interesting to watch them. At this resort they have large nets coverig the open-air buffet, which we suspect is to protect the buffet from birds and coatis.

This resort is far from towns - we took a cab to Playa del Carmen one day. The food is decent, the beach is great, and the resort is clean and well-maintained. It's not the best place I've ever stayed but it is relatively close to the CUN airport, so it's a good choice for a fairly budget trip, especially if you are low on time to go further down towards Playa or Tulum.

Room Tip: The privileged building(s) are nearest the beach and provide exclusive restaurants and palapas in a...

Great place, highly recommended! Travelled with 2 kids, 4 and 7 who spent all day swimming in the awesome pool, playing at the super nice beach, and ate crepes & banana splits from the conveniently located snack, cafe, bar :) Good food and very friendly staff. Perfect place for families and couples wanting to relax in a great atmosphere!

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2014

We stayed at the Catalonia in April. We brought our two kids aged 5 and 3 and were slightly leery after reading the reviews online. We have travelled to Mexico several times but this was a first for our kids.
Every time we have travelled to Mexico we have had some kind of "tummy troubles" and given it was the kids first time there we came prepared. I have to say that my preparation was a waste of money because the food turned out to be fantastic and nobody had any hint of issues! To be honest, this was the best resort I have been to in terms of food. We stayed as Privileged guests and ate mostly at the buffet and the Terrace (very much recommend). The Terrace had the most amazing views and the food was very good.
We were concerned initially that the kids may be bored with no kids pool or water slides or that the pool would be crowded with adults. Wrong again. The kids had an absolute blast and seemed to have a large portion of the pool to jump and play. The resort was apparently fully booked but we never had any issues with crowding at the beach or pool or even the restaurants which was awesome. We never seemed to wait more than a few minutes at most getting drinks and there were plenty of staff serving around the pool.
After reading the online reviews we were really hoping to score a room in building 6. The girl who checked us in was super friendly and yeah we landed a room in building 6!! From previous experience at other resorts we have always gotten a ground floor room and have always had issues with bugs. When we were told our room was in building six but was on the ground floor we were leery again. We went with it and never had even a hint of issues with bugs! Our room backed right onto the pool and was super convenient with the kids.
We did notice the reviews were accurate in terms of the high number of European guests. We had no issues with this and found everyone to be super friendly...that is until a large group of French guests turned up on the resort. We found these French people to be rude and arrogant. There were several times when we were getting meals that they would cut in front or stand in large groups blocking food or pathways. So frustrating. There were several other guests we spoke with that seemed to be sharing a similar experience with this particular group. We tried our best to keep our distance and overall it was fine.
My only real complaint of the resort itself was the fact we were told right from the start they only accept pesos on the resort. Having brought only US cash we used the currency exchange booth at the resort to get some pesos for tipping etc. The exchange rate they used was quite a bit different ($11us vs $13us everywhere else) so we got a bit ripped off there. That being said, it's our fault for not coming properly prepared. Where it choked me a little was later finding they do accept US dollars and I ended up losing quite a bit of money in the currency exchange. Oh well, lesson learned. But just FYI, if you end up in the same scenario, they do accept US dollars at the resort despite what they tell you.
We really enjoyed the fact that this was a smaller resort. Other resorts we have been to have been large and very extravagant. This resort was quite a bit different. We found it was easier to start getting to know other guests and staff as we would see the same people over and over. Our kids made numerous friends and it was easy for them to connect with each other day to day as the resort was small enough to do so. This resort seems to attract older adults and young families with kids. Having travelled during spring break we didn't see a ton of young adults or have any issues with partiers on the resort.
I would definitely stay at this resort again. I would recommend it to anyone travelling to Mexico who has reasonable expectations. Anyone who wants to stay at a large grandios resort where they will can sit on their butt and be waited on hand and foot may have issues. Anyone who expects a resort of 1000+ guests to make food exactly the way you are used to eating it in whatever country you come from and not realize there are 999+ other people that are going to having different tastes that a resort has to appeal to may not be happy anywhere they go. But, if you are looking to relax, are prepared to get off your butt and get your own drink once in a while and maybe have to spend a moment or two in line to do so, if you understand everyone's options regarding food are different, and are ok with walking then you will do just fine at this resort.
Overall in comparison to other resorts this one had the best beach (hands down it was the most beautiful I have ever seen and doesn't even get hot which is nice for the kiddos), the best rooms, the best food and the best value. Compared to what I paid to stay at the others compared to this one, Catalonia wins no question.

Room Tip: Building six is closest to the pool and beach. The farthest from lobby and buffet.

Check- in/Room-
I'm a very easy going, easy to please traveler, so for a hotel to lack achieving this is not a good sign. My girlfriend and I stood for 5 nights as "Privileged" guest. Didn't have to upgrade to it as we originally booked "Catalonia Privileged Maroma." We expected so much more if they're going to put such a title. From the minute we arrived we had a poor experience. NOTE TO ALL!!!! You will NOT be allowed to check in before 3pm. Doesn't matter how much in advance you booked, you won't be getting keys to your room until 3pm. The walk from the hotel lobby to the pool/beach and in some cases your room(depending what building your in) is LONG!!!!!! You do get to see birds and small animals along the forrest walk but to walk that every morning to get to the main buffet hall for breakfast gets annoying. Once our room was ready, we were completely disappointed with the room. Now again, I'm easy going and don't intend on spending much time in my room while on vacation but to say the room was out dated is an UNDER STATEMENT. The bathroom was horrible, no tub, just a stand up shower comprised of concrete and tacky tiles. There wasn't even a shower DOOR to stop the water from going all over the floor when we showered. Instead we laid a towel on the floor that was soaked after each shower. The drawers were old and unattractive. Everything about the room was unattractive and old. The air conditioning is very weak, so if you're just arriving from outside you need an immediate shower to feel the cool from the A/C. The bed was comfortable and that was the only room positive.

Pool/Beach-
If it were not for the beach this hotel would have gotten 1 star from me, they only get 2 stars from me because the beach is one of the most beautiful I have ever been to. The water is amazing as you would expect from Mexico but the beach itself as in the sand is gorgeous. No rocks, no shells, nothing for you to prick your feet on, definitely a pristine beach. The hotel offers a romantic dinner on the beach package which I purchased as I wanted to propose to my girlfriend in a very special way. The dinner which was a pre fixed lobster and steak entre was amazing. Our personal waiter Alexander was great and it was truly a memorable amazing experience.
As for the pool, it was also enjoyable, its nice to have a deep end(7 ft) in a resort pool which you don't come across very often. But there's no swim up bar, what resort in Mexico of all places doesn't have a swim up bar?! So either load up with 3 drinks at a time or your going to be going in and out of the water for drinks often.

Bars/Restaurant-
The entire hotel is very understaffed but you notice it most in these areas, there was almost always a line at the bars and its because most times there was only one person making drinks. At the restaurants which I can only rate the Italian one as that's the only one we had dinner at is also understaffed. You'r unable to make reservations as you can at most resorts instead you show up and either be seated or are given a wait time. We were given a 30 minute wait time yet when we finally got a table there were plenty of tables available (again horribly understaffed). The food there was mediocre at best. Can't rate any other as we being our normal selves would catch a cab and leave the resort to Playa Del Carmen and would have dinner there a couple nights of our stay.

Room Service-
We ordered room service twice, the first time it came pretty fast considering it was ordered at 4am but the 2nd time when it was a more common time of 10pm we waited 80 minutes for the food to come! We were just told "there are a lot of orders and he'll be there soon."

Overall-
The hotel is outdated, in need of a massive renovation and I would NOT recommend it. If you're looking for an Eco friendly hotel, we met 2 nice couples staying at the Sandos Caracol Eco Resot who only had great things to say about it. So maybe that would be a better route for Eco friendly hotel. The only positive from our hotel was the beach, Maroma beach is known to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Riviera Maya. Aside from that, I will NOT be back to this hotel and if you're reading this review looking for insight, trust me when I tell you to stay away and book elsewhere on Maroma beach.

Room Tip: Its either the honeymoon suite or bust in this hotel

Dear Valued Guest,
We would like to thank you for expressing your views on TripAdvisor. We deeply regret not meeting your expectations during your stay at our hotel. We do value and encourage guest feedback as it allows us to make improvements and helps us to maintain consistent high standards of customer service.

First of all we would like to clarify you that check-in time is at 3p.m., even so, we always do our best effort to give rooms before that time, but not always is possible. However, our clients have the access and are allowed to use our facilities from the first moment, and we explain the time to come back to get the room keys. We are very sorry, but unfortunately no matter how long time before you reserve your vacation, we work according with our policies.

We are very sorry if you were not pleased with the structure of our hotel, it has the “hacienda style”, the main walk between the lobby and rooms to the pool/beach area is one of our main attractions in our hotel, many people found it very agreeable and enjoy a lot the walk, but of course it is a personal opinion.

The decoration in the room is modern , but it keeps the Mexican style in the bathroom area. In our brochures we do not specified that we have tubs, in this case, it seems you had a wrong idea of what we offer. All the rooms in our hotel have showers.

About the A/C conditions, at your arrival we fix the temperature according with our standards, after you get in the room and for the rest of your stay, It is you who managed the controllers and fix the temperature you prefer.

Concerning the food quality, we truly regret not having been able to satisfy you, all our restaurants offer a great variety of food, we offer different kinds of cuisine and our chefs are always more than happy to assist our clients and do their best efforts to please everybody. As for our system for dinner, we have a main buffet open from 18:00 to 22:30hrs., and four a la carte restaurants with the same schedule, none of them required reservation, our policy is "first in, first served", so the hostess in the door always explained the clients the timeout to have a table available for dinner.

We cannot force our clients to stay all the time in our hotel, when they decide to go out, it is their decision the activities they want to do.

Overall, our Guest Service staff is always available for assisting our clients and we are sure that if you would have mentioned your discontentment to us, it would have been a pleasure for us to help you and this situation could be ended differently.

We certainly will take seriously your feedback and see possibilities to improve and make sure to provide the best service to our clients.

Yours sincerely,
