“Love the Riviera Maya”
Reviewed April 24, 2014

On the whole, we loved this resort. It was clean, well laid out and we appreciated it's smaller size (400 as compared to 1000 rooms). Six 2 and 3 story buildings, each with garden courtyards are where the rooms are located. Never was there any party noise. Loved that the jungle completely surrounds each building. The beach was AWESOME, with natural palm trees for shade instead of cheesy grass huts. Great pool, lots of activities to join into if you wanted to. We only ran into 1 difficult situation when the service was so poor in the a la cart restaurant that we decided to leave to go to the buffet instead. We politely told the hostess that we were leaving because of the poor service and simple did so. Not expecting anything more to come of it, we were surprised by a phone call from the head of food services to find out more about why we decided to leave. They were extremely gracious and apologetic, and treated us to the finest meal we have ever had the next night as compensation. (in the upgraded restaurant). We were impressed. Beds were comfortable and room was clean. The only other disappointment was that the room we had (on the third floor) had a 5 foot high wall instead of a railing on the balcony. Being only 5 feet tall, there was absolutely NO view off our balcony. Only 24 balconies are like this of the 400ish. We asked for another room that could overlook the courtyard, but another was not available until the next day. We decided to stay because it would mean packing up and repacking, and carrying our things ourselves (No elevators.) We declined the offer to move.
Exceptionally nice buffet, in atmosphere, food and service. (Thanks to the young fellow, Victor that served us breakfast every day.)
We would definitely return with a request for a first or second floor room.

Room Tip: Courtyard facing rooms are preferable, first or second floor as there is no elevators. Balconies wit...

We just got back from a short trip (4 nights) to the Catalonia in Playa Maroma. We really enjoyed our stay. Let me start by saying that I got the privileged upgrade which was only $25 per person for the entire stay. Definitely worth it. We got a room in Building six. I called the hotel 2 weeks prior to arrival and asked for a room in that building. It is the one closest to the beach and the pool. We are divers so it was nice to be close to the dive shop as well. The room was very clean. First I was worried about being on the ground floor but never saw a bug the entire stay. Having privileged access also meant we didn't have to wait with the check in. There is a separate check in area which was very quick. We still couldn't get into our room until 3pm though. Another perk of the privileged upgrade is that you don't need to worry about the towel keys. You can just get them when you need them. What surprised me the most was the quality of the food. It was all excellent, starting with the breakfast which we mostly had on the Terrace at the beach. It was served at the table and the views were amazing. For dinner we always ate at the restaurants where we didn't have to reserve a table. All first come first serve. We never had to wait. The Italian and the steak place (tortuga) were better than the Mexican but they were all great. The filet was done perfectly to temperature. The hotel guests are mostly from Europe which may be why they have great Espresso everywhere. A life safer for me. The dive shop on site was not very busy so we basically had mostly private dives. The dive masters are mostly younger guys from Europe. Antoine, Luca, and Basile were all great to dive with. The local dive sites were not that great, compared to Cozumel where we dove last summer, but we still had fun, even saw a spotted eagle ray. If you don't dive you will really enjoy the beach which is very clean and goes on forever. You can walk into the water without worrying about standing on something. Just nice white sand. Overall, I really recommend this place. We never go back to the same hotel twice but I might have to make an exception for this one.

We stayed in the honeymoon suite room number 4211. We purchased in advanced the "privileged" status.

The upgrades included a FREE Mini-Bar refill daily, the swan sculpture towels everyone posts, slippers, bath robes, a FREE Massage, dinner at The Terrace Restaurant and a Continental Breakfast. Privileged guests also get their own area on the beach, the pool and The Buffet restaurant, although there was no enforcement at the beach and pool. Room Services is also FREE which is good if its raining and you don't want to leave the room.

Tips:
We brought $100 in American singles to last for an entire week and used them to tip for everything. It really is weird to see no one else tipping, we felt like outcasts, but the staff really do notice who are the tippers and who are not. We walked up to the bar and within seconds had frozen margaritas. As well as more Modelo's for the mini-bar, faster coffee service at the buffet. A small amount of tipping will really make your time more pleasant and they happily take the American dollars. If you don't want to bring money with you they have an ATM on site that charges about 31 pesos per 200 taken out of the machine. It only pays out in Pesos, but they also have a currency exchange station that was pretty straightforward. As of this writing we received $11 pesos per USD with no transaction fees. Do this instead of going to the airport where they will rip you off.

The Food:
Hits & Misses on quality and taste. Naturally, the local dishes tasted much better than most of the rest. We really liked the buffet considering this because if you don't like something, just go and get something else. The buffet area includes some home comfort foods like several styles of pizza, a sushi bar, and salad bars. There are also chefs preparing food that you can ask for a certain way if you want to wait. For the enjoyment of "getting back to the beach" the buffet fits the scene perfect. We had breakfast-lunch and dinner daily there, and the servers will always take care of you for drinks. The Terrace restaurant however really is exceptional quality, and we had a FREE steak & potatoes au gratin dinner included in our package and it was very enjoyable. But it is an extra charge from the all-inclusive.

The Drinks:
Really annoying that the ONLY beer served in the entire resort is Corona Draft. You can get Modelo beer cans in the room service but otherwise you are left with liquor and mixed drinks as your choice. The service at all the bars was outstanding. Again, probably helps to tip. There is a night club called Cats that is open 11-2am nightly.

The Beach:
Amazing sand, amazing ocean, it really is perfect.

The Staff:
Very good service overall. The pool staff play games like Bingo, Volleyball, and other small activities. Bell boy service back and forth from the hotel to the main entrance was swift. Waiters and bartenders were pleasant.

The Resort:
The complaints we have were limited to the fact there is no air conditioning in the lobby, buffet area or bars. And it does get very humid it becomes quite uncomfortable. The pool had no swim-up bar which like 99% of all inclusives seem to have as a staple. Do not drink the water, they leave water bottles right next to the bathroom sink, take the hint as use them to brush your teeth. They have plenty of local tourist companies stationed inside the lobby, including our shuttle from the airport, and we used them to tour some Mayan Ruins.

Overall:
Very happy with our stay for the cost. There are plenty of other resorts in the area that cost twice as much.

Room Tip: Free Room Service

We stayed at this resort from March 30-April 6th. The overall experience at this resort was wonderful. We were having our wedding here so we had a large group. Upon arrival everyone was very friendly and very accommodating to our large group.

The walk from the lobby to the pool was quite far. We have a 2 year old so sometimes we just ate at the snack bar by the pool instead of walking all the way back to the buffet. The buffet was large and there was always a good variety for everyone. We had a few people with different food allergies and at all the restaurants everything was clearly labeled. Also if you let your server know they were very helpful. I personally did not like the steak restaurant but I know many of my family and friends did and went back a second time.

Pilar helped us with our wedding. She was amazing we could not have asked for anything different. She was there all the time to help and the day could not have gone any better!

We used the photographer from the hotel and let me tell you he was fabulous. He made sure we had every pose we wanted and the pictures turned out amazing. I would recommend him to everyone. He was on time, very professional and made everyone feel very comfortable.

I wish we were closer to playa but other than that the overall trip was fantastic. One of our friends had to go to the hospital and the resort staff was amazing offering anything from a phone to snacks while we waited for news. They also told us to negotiate the price of the cabs before you go in the cab. This helped a lot when travelling to and from the hospital.

Room Tip: We were in building 6 I loved the location close to the beach and pool. Not loud at night

We were supposed to go to C. Tulum, and were forced into this one. Obviously under-staffed. They worked hard, but I often had to get our coffee and water. Buffet would run out of food. It is dominated by Europeans, not good or bad, but it felt isolating as an English speaker (weird, I know, I'm in a foreign country, what do I expect?). The privileged was a JOKE-- all standard upgrades at other resorts. We didn't pay for it, it was a "reward" for being bumped from the better resort. Rooms are old. Food is OK, other resorts have better. If you have kids and it's the right price, it'll be nice. However, it is by far not one of the better resorts in the area.

We spent last week at the resort and loved it. I cannot say how much we love the Mexican experience. We have been traveling for to many years now and it seems we always have Mexico in our heart's. I love every thing about this resort, sure we have stayed in more expensive places but we fell in love from the moment we arrived. Why? The people that work here made our stay most enjoyable, from the lawnspeople, to the maids and to our beach waitress Jessica. Yes contrary to some reviews there is beach service and good service to. Jessica was great always there when our glasses were empty.
We loved the activity team, they just keep going all day and night. Very friendly always approached us to see how were doing. We even went one night to the disco for a beer drinking contest had a blast. Loved the Europeans and Canadians very friendly, I loved talking to them. The beach what can you say one of the best I have ever been to. No problem getting lounges on the beach or around the pool. Food was good can't complain
Drinks were good I don't think they were watered down. Wife would confirm this.
My wife and myself are both in high pressure management and love people.
This is why I luv this resort, whenwe are on vacation come hell or highwater we will have fun and we did at this resort. We will come back next year only this time for two weeks
