Hello Everybody! here is the fussy gal's review!
Hubby & I have just came back from one week at this very exotic hotel.
We picked this destination due to the fabulous beach reviews and proximity from airport and a strong desire to meet a coati. Here is the good & the bad.
Because it was our 10th anniversary and because we travel to the south at least 2x year at 4 or 5 star hotels for the past 10 yrs, we are quite critical & did not hesitate to upgrade to Priviledge Ocean View suite; since we wanted the acces to tapas beach terrace and sea views we paid the extra $.
We also let the hotel know of this special event & they were kind to give us a bottle of bubbly that we happilly gave away to staff for their great service.
Other than that no real treats (extra dinner , etc)
We have had stays in a many hotels that had offered us a beach dinners - lobster, champagne, sunrise breakfasts, etc just for booking priviledge so no special attention there.
The check in for priviledge is separate but our room was ready only at 2.30pm - more than 1 hr after we arrived, since check out is at 3pm ???We went to eat at the terrace and waited 40 min for a hamburger but no complaint there the views are stunning.
Do not bother to pay for Ocean view room unless u are in the villa right on the beach, because all you will see is the top of palms and sweaty pool lovers.
Unless you love tree top views, you will be trully disappointed to be paying extra to say hello to leafy greens in the morning. Also make sure you waky waky at 6am to reserve a spot in the shade they are scarce after 8am in the priviledge beach section.
Maid service was fantastic !! lots of water, products and very quick, plus lots of fun towel animals (dont know why but I never get sick of finding them upon my return at the room!!)
We left 1-2 US / day for her and she was trully happy to receive some cosmetic products like mascara / conditioner ...
BEACH is breath taking, and after seeing more than 20 in my Carribean travels, this one is way up there close to the Cuban's Cayo Santa Maria one.
Trouble with this hotel is that in front of privil. beach section there is lots of motorized jet ski - sports activites :( The smell was horrible we complained twice to the hotel but no change.
They were there every day even though they are not affiliated to the hotel.
Secrets hotel is on the far right and was very peaceful compared to our place. We regreted not booking there afterwards. Buffet food was terribly dissapointing especially first few days, no fruits (we are in MAY people !!!) other that papaya wich I personnaly find tastes bad, pinaple and some honeymelon, apples were the star of the week.
Compared to Dominican or even Cuba were you have watermelon and mangoes galore, this was pretty surprising especially so close to summer.
Thank god for omlettes and cappucinos!
Mexican coffee is quite good so do not hesitate to purchase some for back home. Stay away from buying stuff on the beach - the 925 silver is really just some knock off metal and the cigars are fake.
They have 2-3 a la carte but the only decent one is the Italian, splendid staff, super clean, no reservation required and you can usually get in less waiting time than the other 2 .
We went to the Steak house at 7.30 but ended up sitting down at 8.45pm and had our first entrée at 9.10pm 9and it was not what we ordered)
After we were served to bloody steaks at 9.20 when having order well done we just got up and left. So we ended up eating at the lobby buffet for 4 nights (yey priviledge)
They called us 2x in the room for quality review and were given a review card during a dinner to fill out, wich we found soooo annoying. If you care about our opinion, we think its more respectful to ask us upon departure but their approach was bothersome and intrusive, especially when they called us in the room. It NEVER happend to us in any hotel.
Overall this hotel is saved by the friendliness of staff and the location - animal lovers will be enchanted by the setting. However lack of prestige for priviledge clients - NO ROOM SERVICE! - poor managment for a la carte and poor breakfast choices will mean that unfortunately we will not return but trully appreciate mexican hospitality and culture in general.

Room Tip: Higher floors have less bugs!

This will be our fourth trip to the Mayan riviera ( we have stayed mostly at Secrets resort) and If your not going during peak season wait to upgrade when you arrive at this resort. We upgraded to a oceanfront suite ( one of four) for only a third of the price. Suite 7004 is amazing! The view, the comfort and privet beach was worth every penny and the reason I gave this resort 4 stars. The food was good but not very much variety if you stay for a week. If you decide to go on an excursion I recommend the Coba tour with the repelling and zip lining, Very fun!!!
Definitely stay at this resort if you want to spend most of your time in the ocean ( no coral reef when walking in) and upgrade to a second floor ocean suite.

We stayed at the Catalonia Privileged Maroma from May 9 to May 19. This is one of the best resorts we stayed at. We have been to 12 resorts in Riviera Maya. This resort is about 30 minutes from the airport.

Playa Maroma is the best beach we have seen in Riviera Maya, white sand with no rocks and no shells. The wather is turquoise. You can walk for at least an hour in either direction. Clear water, but no snorkelling off this beach, to many waves.

This resort is very Mexican, with a lot of colours. The hotel grounds are beautiful. You can see birds, iguanas, coatis and we saw a monkey. It takes 5 minutes to walk from the beach to the lobby/Main Buffet, the main walkway is in the "jungle" with a nice "spa" music and the sounds of birds. You walk to your room through a narrow path through the tropical forest.

I think that there are only 2 rooms facing the ocean. We were in one of them in building 6, (room 6323 and 6324). There is also one small villa in front of building 6, with ocean front rooms (probably 2 rooms in the villa). Building 6 is the only building facing the ocean, building 4 is behind. The beds were comfortable. WIFI worked in the room and was included in the privileged. There is no way to lock the door once in the room to ensure that the cleaning people could not just walk in with their card, which they did one night at 9:45 pm.The safe is free. There are drawers in the room.

The food is good, although not the best. Before 9 am, you can only have a cup of coffee in the main lobby, it would be nice to have it available at the bar beside the beach. There are 3 restaurants and 1 more for privileged (Tappas), plus one buffet open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and one buffet open for lunch beside the pool. No dinner reservation is necessary.

It can't walk to take the collectivo on the highway from this resort, the road is to far.

There is a bar between the beach and the pool and a snack bar with Ice Cream, milk shakes and crêpes. There are also fresh juices beside the pool, starting at noon.

You get a light purple wristbands (privileged) when you arrived. Most of the people from France had a red band, blue/green for Italy…

The Animation team worked long and hard hours. Thank you to Jesus, Brenda, Marcia, Amouri, Alice… There are 3 different animation teams… One team is paid by the resort (4 animators, Jesus, Branda, Alice, Amouri), One team is paid by a Travel Agency from France (look voyage) very large group of animators, and the last one is from a Travel Agency from Italty (also a very large group)… Each group is trying to make their guest feel special, so if you are from France or Italy you will be happy, if not it takes a few days to understand why it feels different… I would prefer that they hired local staff, like all the other resorts… The French and Italian's animators were nice, but their job is to make their clients happy… It would be nice to have more Mexican music at the lobby, since it is Mexico…

We had a Privileged room, that includes:
Access to Spa wet area (one small jaccuzi, sauna and steam room)
Exclusive area at the buffet (same buffet for privileged or non privileged)
Beach towel service in the room (beach towel are in your room when you arrive, after that you get them beside the pool)
Pillow menu
A free diner in the Terrace Lounge and Tapas Bar (we tried the Tapas Bar and we went to the buffet after)
Lunch at the Tapas restaurant (we had lunch their only once, it took more than an hour to get our lunch, we were a group of 6 so we could not eat on the terrace outside, after that we ate at the lunch buffet by the pool or at the main buffet beside the lobby)
Early check-in and late check-out upon availability
Bathrobe and Slipper
Coffee pot
Free safe
Free WIFI
Exclusive area on the beach (I think that the privileged section on the beach was nicer, more space and with palapas, in the regular area the chairs are packed under a long canopy …, this is for me the only real advantage to pay for privileged). The privileged section is in front of Building 6.

Overall, the resort was a good resort and I would recommend it for anyone.

This is a place you think you and your loved one are alone! Its a great place to rekindle the Love between you and your lover. Clean beaches, soft sand, great service and fresh fruit juices blended to your taste right on the beach.

When I arrived I was expecting a little chaos, but everything went smoothly at this hotel; Minus the allergy incident which I'll talk to you all about later.

Important note, this is not a party hotel, this is a place for Family and lovers to have a safe and enjoyable time.

The beach is the main attraction and the hotel is very good with its service quality and room cleanliness. Expect to walk, as it is a large hotel, but with the smooth sounding spa music in the background playing almost everywhere you are hypnotized to take your time. Really enjoyed the flow of the hotel, not at all busy and everything you need is at your finger tips.

OK now for the real TIPS
Do not lose the towel CARDS, it will run you 35$, when you return your towels make sure you return them before 6pm or take the towels with you to your room ( I don't advise this because you will bring in sand fleas) but the beach is clean and there are no sand fleas....I don't take the chance.
Mosquitos come out at 7-8 in the morning and at 8-9 at night, you will be attacked so try not to eat at this time or hang out in the lobby. The beach is the safest place as there is enough breeze to keep the buggers from landing on your body...
Do not get the privilege package, (waste of money) the only true difference is that the room is equipped with a nicer armoire and a bed. you also have towel service and a special section on the beach reserved for privilege guests but honestly not worth 240 bucks...
keep your money and spend it on a message like I did, the spa and the messages are great. 2 can get a message at the same time.
The hotel also offers romantic dinner on the beach...worth getting

Overall this is a hotel that you can bring your family, and or lover. During the day you have entertainment fun on the beach and around the pool, but if you do not want it, you simply find a place to chill under the sun on the beach...no one will bother you.

there is a club but nothing to rave about, the bars are full of alcohol and no long line ups. there is a vending machine that serves some food but often doesn't work and the midnight snack bar IS A MAJOR FLOP, s make sure you don't miss dinner or the buffet which is spectacular.

ALLERGY WARNING
if you suffer from food allergies you have a problem, the hotel is equipped with allergy cards written in three languages, and the staff is aware of allergies, except they don't care or take it seriously at the restaurants. YOU MUST MAKE SURE TO SPEAK WITH THE CHEF DIRECTLY. Not the hostess or the waiters, as they don't seem to communicate the urgency or the allergy warning properly to one another, even though they speak the same frigg'in language!

There is a creperie and ice cream desert bar open almost all day....

Room Tip: any room is good do not go for the upgrade, waste of money...unless you like to choose your pillow comfort...

We returned from the Playa on May 18th. Had a great time. The beach was absolutely beautiful! LOVED the beach!!! We read all the reviews before we went and chose this place based on what other said. My honest review. A perfect family place. If you are looking for a beautiful beach with a nice hotel then this is a great choice. The rooms are a little tired BUT very clean and large. The restaurants are exactly what you would expect from an all-inclusive. The bars were great although we felt they could have had more bar staff...The pool was kept at a warm temperature and loved that is had shallow areas for relaxing. Al la carte were on a first come first serve basis. There were 3 and you could go a total of 4 times.
We did not upgrade to the Priviledge so not sure what the benefit it.
I would totally recommend this property.
One con - the lack of watersports.

Ages of travellers - 4 in their 40's and 4 teenagers,

Room Tip: I believe the rooms closer to the beach may be being upgraded. We stayed in the Tulum building which was closest the the lobby and farthest from the beach. Room 1113 had a huge balcony!
