“Perfection!”
Reviewed July 19, 2013 via mobile

My hubby and I just returned from our trip to Cancun where we stayed at this resort for 9 glorious days.

For starters, the service and staff are by far the friendliest I have ever encountered and I'm pretty well traveled. We were constantly greated by every employee eho passed us with a smile and a friendly "hola, Beunos Dias!" The staff really goes the extra mile to make you feel welcome, comfortable and wanted at the resort.

The Secrets Entertainment Team was amazing. They are constantly working to ensure that guests are having a great time and that there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained. From pool and beach volleyball to concerts at the beach and their fun, nightly shows in the theatre, there was always something going on.

The resort was immaculate! Never have I seen such a well-kept and perfectly manicured resort. This place is spotless and gorgeous. The ride into the resort is bumpy. It's a one-way road and it isn't the smoothest ride but don't let the rude in deceive you. Heaven is just around the corner.

I'm a super picky eater so I'll admit I wasn't in love with the food. But even as a picky eater, I was always able to find something at one of the many restaurants on site. Service is slower than I'm used to in the states but the presentation of every dish is delightful.

The beach! What more can I say. The beach is one of the most beautiful I have seen. Sand like baby powder, crystal clear and warm waters. Relatively calm waters as well. So nice and tranquil. On our last day there, my husband and I reserved one of the beach beds for an additional $40. Wish we would have reserved one long before and for multiple days. It was amazing.

The main lounge was a joy to sit in as of an evening. I really enjoyed the live piano music.

Be ware of nasty Mosquitos and sand fleas. My husband and I received many bites despite our best efforts to bathe in Off bug spray every evening before heading out. The bugs aren't bad during the day but once it starts to cool down as of an evening, they get really bad. Between the two of us, we went through a can if spray in a week.

We paid a little extra to book a jr. Suite swim out room. Although it was nice to have, we didn't really use it as we were more often at not at the pool or beach. Chairs can be a little hard to get at the pool, especially shaded ones so if you're planning to sit at the pool all day, head over in the AM to get a good spot.

Overall, I would return to this resort in a heartbeat!!!

Stayed 12-16 July. The resort was nice, but be aware of the rules before your purchase. Here are some things to know:

- No music at the pool was a killer for us. When we asked the "Pool Guard" about the lack of music he put his hand to his ear and said "If you listen close you can hear it." really!

- After check-in, they pass you off to representative that wants you invest in timeshares. Don't fall for it... they'll tell you you'll get $200 in resort coupons. My father-in-law tried to use one of these at the SPA and was denied.

- Couldn't get a reservation at the Hibachi restaurant to see the show... was told it was booked for the next 4 days.

- Mosquitos where bad and all four in our party where bitten even after applying bug spray. We asked the resort about spraying like other resorts, and were told they were a "Green" resort and didn't spray.

- Although the staff was nice, food was good, and beach was nice, we'll not be returning to this resort. We prefer the Excellence Playa Mujeres or Valentin Imperial Maya.

- Read “AVOID resort and beware of the rulesheets/pool guards” review below for their comments too.

First off, I must apologize for not finishing and posting this review sooner… We returned home to some family medical issues that had to be dealt with… All is fine now!
Our trip was absolutely amazing! Last year we decided to try doing an11 days & 10 nights, 2 resort visit to Mexico! We’ve stayed in Secrets Resorts before and have fallen in love with Secrets Silver Sands.
However, this was our first stay at Secrets Maroma Beach! Our expectations were very high and SMB did not disappoint what so ever!
Please bear with me on this review… I posted a live forum while on this trip from both SSS & SMB resorts and much of the information is based upon questions that I had been asked in the forums… Thus, the long review!

Entering/Check-in:
Secrets Maroma Beach is only a short 20-25 minute trip from the airport. As we exited Rt 307 we were driven down the main drive to the resort. The drive Y’s off towards SMB and you can clearly see you are about to enter a very special place by the brick paved drive and the very lush tropical vegetation. We were so excited! Once we entered the gate and drove up the driveway we came to the grand entrance. Where a doorman walked up to us, opened the doors and greeted us and told us our driver would be here at any moment! We both looked at one another and were somewhat confused “driver”? We both thought what driver? Moments later a gentleman arrived in a golf cart and said you’re bags will be taken to your room. I’ll be glad to drive you down to the Preferred Club! Following a winding narrow drive way passing the tennis courts we came upon a building with a thatched roof. Our driver walked us to the door and we entered the Preferred Club Building were escorted to one of the desks where we were instantly offered cool fragrant towels and several glasses of sparkling wine as we checked in. A gentleman walked over to us and I saw his name tag “Ivan”, I stood up and extended my hand and said you must be Ivan Santos the head concierge! We shook hands and he gave us a tour of the resort before showing us to our room number 2540…
Resort layout:
SMB has a very good vibe to it. The staff goes way out of their way to create a fun, pleasant yet a very romantic atmosphere. Everyone seemed very relaxed it may be because it attracts a certain group of guests. Not snooty, but upscale, not rowdy but enjoying themselves and having fun!
The main building is set in center stage of all the suite buildings. As you enter the lobby from the drive you will pass the private check-in desks and then step down to a beautiful sunken lounge. This entire area has large glass windows overlooking the resort and out to the ocean. To the left is the Rendezvous lobby bar with separate seating and tables available. Adjacent to the Rendezvous lobby bar is the Coco Café where all types of premium coffee and snacks are served. To the right of the sunken lounge are several shops and the entrance to Himitsu, the Asian inspired restaurant with their á la carte menu and four Teppanyaki tables. Directly in front of the sunken lobby lounge are doors leading out to a beautiful veranda that runs the entire length of the main building with tables and chairs seating areas also overlooking the entire resort and out to the ocean and large staircases on both sides leading down to ground level. To the left of the Veranda area are entrances to the Coco Café and Desires Lounge and to the right are the entrances to El Patio (Mexican cuisine), Bordeaux (French cuisine) and Portofino (Mediterranean & Italian inspired cuisine). On ground level below the veranda is the World Café Restaurant with international cuisine, this buffet-style restaurant offer a variety of dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The spa, fitness center and business offices are also located on ground level of the main building.
The resort is fairly large in the sense that they have a considerable amount of land. The resort is in somewhat of a U shape with all the buildings facing outwards towards the ocean. On both ends of the U are the preferred ocean front buildings. Note: It appeared that the suites above the second or third floor in all the buildings have nice ocean views. The first floor suites are true swim out suites, you step off your patio right down into the pool they look incredible! However, we prefer the ocean view especially the sun rises!
Directly in front of the main building, overlooking the resort grounds towards the ocean is a water feature that bubbles water up in to form a stream and slowly meanders down into smaller pools and widens as it flows towards and into the main pool. The main sidewalk follows both sides of this stream down towards the main pool & beach passing the Sugar Reef Bar, where there are tables with chairs and even a ping pong table placed directly in the middle of the stream. Off the main side walk adjacent to the stream are smaller paths that flow off in different directions to each building like branches in a tree. The entire resort is engulfed by lush foliage and well manicured flora, vegetation and numerous varieties of palms.
Rooms/Suites:
Ivan walked us to our suite #2540. It was a fourth floor suite in building #25 with an incredible view of the ocean! He showed us how everything worked and then called for Roger (our building concierge to come up). Ivan then introduced us! Roger was really amazing, he asked us our coffee and mini-bar and refrigerator preferences (all of which were correctly replenished daily). Whenever he saw us he greeted us by name and anytime we needed information or reservations Roger took wonderful care of us!
The suite was beautifully decorated in old world colonial style. As you enter the foyer next to the door is the wonderful Secrets Box (SB). This allows room service to deliver food and beverages and pick up empties without disturbing the guests. Several other features we loved! There was a “do not disturb” switch next to the SB. You simply press the button and a light outside notifies housekeeping or room service that you wish to not be interrupted, just don’t forget to press it before you leave if you’d like to have your room cleaned or attended to. In fact several times they did call us to confirm that we indeed did not want to be bothered, but that was good. The other well thought out feature that impressed us was a questionnaire that was placed on the foyer stand as we entered our room, asking what times we preferred to have maid service visit during the day and during the evening for turndown service. They were constantly cleaning, changing towels and replenishing our toiletries and were very accurate to the times we had requested…
The bathroom is located off the foyer it contained double sinks and a nice size jetted Jacuzzi. There were frosted glass doors on the shower and water closet (toilet) area with a fan. A privacy curtain which gave ample privacy separates the Jacuzzi from the rest of the suite. The shower had plenty of warm water and always very good pressure. The toiletry products were 8oz bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash and #15 sun screen. Toothpaste, tooth brush shaving cream, razor, a comb, shoe polisher, bath cap and even a sewing kit was also provided! The refrigerator (w/ Coca Cola, orange, Sprite, mini Coronas, OJ and water); mini-bar (w/vodka, rum and Jack Daniels) and espresso machine was stocked daily by Roger with everything we had asked for, or had been used up by us...
Our suite had a king size bed that was absolutely one of the most comfortable bed we’ve ever slept in! Across from the bed was a large armoire that had a nice size flat screen TV and drawers below for clothing, etc. both sides of the armoire had closets that contained clothes rods and hangers, an iron and ironing board and umbrella. The lighting was perfect throughout the suite. As you walk towards the balcony you will step down into the living room area which contains a business desk with all types of plug-in ports and a built in cushioned loveseat with mosaic tiles set into the stucco and a nice sized coffee table, there is a ceiling fan over this area. In front of the sliding glass doors to the balcony are large wooden louvered doors that are stained to match the room décor and slides open to let the light into the room. The balcony with an incredible view also had a built-in stucco loveseat with contrasting colorful cushions and pillows and an enormous mosaic tiled hot tub with old world fixtures… What an incredible view we were truly in heaven!
Turn down service was great, every night they would leave us the Sundial, an activity schedule with a list of activities, times, shows, music at the pool and restaurant schedules including the weather forecast for the following day! The air conditioning was plenty cool as the outside temperature was very warm and humid. The ceiling fan in the living room is a nice touch. Note: If the doors to the balcony are left open the air conditioner goes off!
Many of the buildings have true swim out suites, where guests step out of their suite onto the patio and several steps down into a semi-private pool. I believe these swim out pools may be shared by 4-5 suites. I never saw more than one or two couples using the swim out pools at a time, this seemed to set a very romantic atmosphere!
Pools/Beach:
The main pool is beautiful; it surrounds two open air restaurants (Oceana and Seaside Grill) this pool is where many activities go on (pool volleyball, music, aerobics, various games and other exercises). The Manatee swim-up bar is also located in this pool. There are plenty of chaises that surround the pools although on one occasion there didn’t seem to be any chaises available... By simply asking one of the pool attendants or wait staff…They were more than happy to gather some for us!
Incidentally, I do realize it may be annoying to some guests who like to reserve those chaises for the entire day whether they’re using them or not??? However, annoying as it may be SMB has a “no towel games” policy and they do enforce it, thank god! If personal belongings are left unattended for more than 30 minutes they are removed”! Bravo SMB!
On Saturdays a whole entourage of Restaurant managers, chefs, souse chefs & wait staff from the various restaurants came out and paraded around the pools (and literally in the pools on kayaks and floats) serving guests all types of exotic multicultural hors d'oeuvres and foods from around the world. What an incredible touch!
The beach was just mind-blowing! It is very apparent why this beach has been voted as one of the top beaches in the world! The fine white sand is soft like talcum powder, it never seemed to get hot. The staff was always trying to help you whether rushing you drinks, snacks or whatever you desired right down to finding you a chaise! The chaises have very comfortable cushions on them. Bali beds are also scattered throughout the beach and pool areas. Towels were plentiful and always available all day long.
The service was incredible at all of the pools as well as the beach… All of the waiters worked so hard! Muchas gracias to Benito, Marco, Eduardo, Lucy and Ana!
Restaurants:
Rather than do a breakdown of each and every restaurant I will simply say. Everything from the atmosphere, quality of food, presentation and the service was superior in every restaurant! Every dish we had was truly outstanding, gourmet and the presentations were incredible! I may be mistaken but the quantity seemed to be larger than expected. However, there were a several occasions that we were hungry for surf & turf… So we ordered a steak or other meat as the turf entrée and then ordered shrimp or another seafood entrée as our surf. The waiters were more than pleased to accommodate us. I cannot imagine how anyone could possibly complain about the quality or the quantity of food being served especially by the time you have all of your courses, in fact we rarely had room for deserts. Wine lists were simply offered, we were never pressured to purchase. Although I have to say their wine list is very extensive with an incredible assortment of world wines… We did enjoy several bottles of wine we’ve wanted to try for quite some time during our dinner and the prices were very reasonable!
Dinner is served from 6-10 or 11pm, no reservations required “ala carte” menus at Bordeaux - French cuisine, Ratatouille - Mediterranean cuisine, El Patio - Mexican cuisine, Portofino - Italian cuisine, Himitsu- Asian cuisine with two Teppanyaki/ hibachi tables (reservations are required for the Teppanyaki tables). The World Café – International buffet style cuisine. Dress code for men is: long slacks or jeans, collared or polo shirt, shoes, or closed toe sandals…
The Seaside Grill – Outdoors; grilled steaks, etc. Oceana – Outdoors; fresh local seafood dishes, etc. Dress code for men is: long slacks or shorts, collared or polo, no sleeveless shirt, shoes or sandals.
Breakfast & Lunch is available daily at the World Café and is buffet style. Lunch is also served “ala carte” at either the Oceana or Seaside Grill (I believe the only dress code for these restaurants during lunch hours are shirts, cover-ups, shorts/swim suit and sandals). Quite honestly the “Barefoot Grill” which is conveniently situated adjacent to the main pools offer such a variety of grilled meats & seafood as well as other snacks, munchies that its not even necessary to leave the pool area! They really do an incredible job!
My special thank you to Edgar at Himitsu; Pablo and Hector in Bordeaux; Edgar in Portofino; Maximo, Alejandro, Eliau, Antonio and Victor at Oceana; at Seaside Grill; Flavio at Himitsu and lastly but not to be forgotten Antonio and Freddy at World Café… I thank you all for your outstanding service and your genuine smiles everyday!!
Room Service is 24hrs per day. We took advantage of room service quite often. As soon as I woke up I would order coffee, fruit, toast and yogurt almost daily... Then at night after returning from dancing or a show we’d sometimes order munchies or snacks… They have quite a selection and really do an outstanding job and never once made a mistake with our order and it was delivered to the “Secrets Box” within 20 minutes!
Bars:
We frequented the Preferred Club Lounge quite often. After spending the day at the pools or beach, before dinner and after dinner on our way back to our room for a night cap… The bartenders Joel and Hector did a fabulous job and had a real gift of gab, not to mention made delicious drinks, especially our Grey Goose Dirty Martini’s! The Rendezvous Lobby Bar had a very relaxing atmosphere with entertainment on a nightly basis! However we spent more time outside at a table on the veranda with the beautiful views overlooking the resort and the ocean! We walked past the Sugar Reef Bar many times however never stopped to have a cocktail there although there always seemed to be people either playing ping pong out front in the stream or playing pool. Desires Discothèque always seemed to draw crowds for dancing after the shows or late night dinners… We never really had the opportunity nor the need to have a drink at the Showtime Bar as by the time we were ready to sit and watch one of the shows we were pretty much at full alcohol capacity and chose to have a break!
The Barracuda Bar is the walk up bar adjacent to the pools and was the main service bar where the majority of the waiters had drinks made for their guests. The Manatee Bar is the swim-up bar in the main pool that not only serviced waiters, but also the swim up clientele! And lastly the Beach Bar was conveniently located on the beach near the Water Sports Complex… We had fun just sitting on the swing seats enjoying a few tropical drinks or cervezas just to relax after a beautiful day on the beach!
The quality and the large selection of premium liquors was very consistent at every bar we went to. Every drink was excelente!
Activities/ Entertainment:
If you are looking to just relax and enjoy the pools and sun that’s always available there was never pressure to be involved in any of the daily activities... However, for an active vacation, Secrets definitely has you covered day or night! Daily activities on the resort included volleyball (both in the pool and on the beach), exercise classes, kayaking tours, Spanish classes, cooking classes, Bingo, Blackjack, Poker, Cooking & Martini classes and so much more! The entertainment staff is incredible and work so hard leading all of the activities all day. Then they show up at the dance club at night to help get everyone on the dance floor…
The entertainment was very good! While we did not watch all of the shows the ones we did see could easily compare to some of the top Las Vegas shows. Rock of Ages and the Cirque du Soleil shows were excellent. We especially liked the Fire Show, don’t miss this one either!
We didn’t take advantage of the spa although we had talked to other couples who said they received some of the best spa services they’ve ever had? They never pushed their spa services on you like they do at some resorts…
Service/Gratuities:
The service was far and above anything you could imagine, unless you’ve had the pleasure of staying at other Secret Resorts. I cannot say enough about the staff. Everyone was so friendly and genuinely interested in providing the best possible service. They go so out of their way to pamper and spoil all of their guests…
Even though this is an all inclusive resort and advertise as “gratuities included”, we always bring several hundred + US dollars with us in 1’s, 2’s & 5’s. We tip for excellent service! Not because we feel we have to, but because we want to… These people go to such extremes to provide us with such outstanding service in all areas… They certainly earn it and they deserve it... We tip our concierge, bartenders & wait staff for meals, drinks & room service… We tip housekeeping and maids (including turn down service), maintenance should we need them and the pool and beach attendants who provide great service to us. The tips never seemed to be expected or taken for granted but were always greatly appreciated.
Overall:
We have met so many wonderful friends at SMB we loved it and we will positively be back…
This resort goes way beyond the majority of their competition… Granted you can’t please everyone, everyone’s idea of perfection is somewhat different and everyone makes mistakes every now and then, after all we’re human right? However, we really didn’t see one thing that we looked at as a negative or bad experience and certainly not enough to complain about!
What impressed me the most was that SMB has such an incredible handle on what their guest’s are looking for in a resort… Every aspect of this resort seems to be so thoroughly thought out… So much attention seemed to be paid to the fine details in just about every aspect! And better yet… Every employee seemed to fully understand what their job was and all those details management wanted them to carry out to fulfill for their guest’s wants and needs!
For those of you who have any doubt’s… Forget about it! Just go!
Thank you & happy travels!
Paul

Please, if anyone has any questions feel free to message me and I’d be more than happy to get back to you as soon as I’m able!

Room Tip: We loved the views of the upper floors!

I've stayed at all inclusive resorts in Cancun and Punta Cana and nothing compares to my stay at Secrets Maroma. This resort is really hitting it's stride and offers above average service, facilities and food. Immaculate rooms and staff that go out of their way to make your trip unforgettable. I'm already looking to book another short trip before the end of the year. As some of the other posters can attest this place has set my expectations so high I think I'd be disappointed going anywhere else.

Note: This is truly a couples resort so if you're looking for a wild party type atmosphere this is not the place to go. If you're looking for nothing but relaxation in paradise book your trip today!!!

Visit Manuel at the Mexican restaurant; top notch service. Sasquatch and the rest of the entertainment squad will keep you entertained. Shout out to the services crew who kept our room immaculate and turned down the bed every night.

Secrets Maroma.... I miss you.

Room Tip: We stayed in the 2000 block, closer to the main buffet. I don't think there is a bad room locat...

Secrets Maroma

What can I say, this is an AMAZING place to stay and I would HIGHLY recommended this hotel to anyone and everyone. I stayed here with my wife for 2 weeks on our honeymoon from 27th June - 11th July and the weather was AMAZING yes each day there was a thunder cloud that passed by which you saw in the distance or the odd day when one actually came over the resort which would last 1hr or so then back to scorching hot sun again.

The staff were AMAZING there, they could not do enough for you.. We found that if you tipped or not you seemed to get the same level of service no matter what! so we decided that the staff that went the extra mile to give them tips as and when, and the service only seemed to get better when we did this.

The rooms and beds seemed sooo big and comfortable it was better than being at home loved it all we had just a tropical view, but for the little time you spend in your room we didn't care. Just a recommendation if you can I feel top floor in any building will be the best bet.

Food wise we loved ALL the food there everything is made to such a high standard the only restaurants we didn't like was the French (Because we had little choice that we liked on that menu, obviously this is a preference thing to each person) and the World Cafe (ONLY in the evening as we did not like the food we had there one night!) World Cafe breakfast is FANTASTIC and we LOVED Edgar who looked after us so much every morning and I made a good friend with him I miss him :(. Also we did not like the Hitmitsu restaurants main menu BUT the sushi menu is AMAZING!!!! We loved it...

The entertainment in the daytime was VERY good and the evening were amazing some days but certain shows I would quite happy miss if we went again. I cannot thank the following member of the excellente team... Big Willy, Donni, Minni, Manni, Harry Potter lol they were sooo lovely and made us feel so welcome EVERYDAY we loved every minute with them thank you sooooo much!

The Beach is STUNNING and cannot fault it in ANYWAY Caribbean at its BEST!!! amazing... And the pool is amazing with lots of loungers you just had to get one before 11pm otherwise you may struggle if you want to get close to the pool bar. They only criticism I could make is the pool bar seems to shut VERY early in the afternoon maybe an hour or so longer would be better! I would like to say a SPECIAL BIG thank you to Eduardo the pool attendant for helping us each day with loungers and medical care thank you again.

Overall this honeymoon for us was by far and away the BEST holiday I/We have ever been on this includes for me the Maldives, St Lucia and may other exotic locations to name a few.

Thank you soooo much for such a memorable occasion.

Room Tip: Any building TOP floor I would highly recommend as I feel the swim out pools were not worth the mone...

I have never written a review as i have never felt it to be necessary but this resort deserves a review.

Wow what can I say?? From the moment me and my husband arrived we were spoilt. Cold flannel on arrival, champagne at check in and pure royalty treatment. We stayed at the secrets maroma for 7 nights and never left once as the resort was just too beautiful to leave. Our room was decorated for our honeymoon and we received a bottle of champagne and flowers. The staff will do everything they can to help you and there English is perfect.

Me and my husband also had some treatments in the spa and used some vouchers to get money off for the Swedish body. (Best massage I have ever had) The romantic dinner on the beach is worth the extra cost and will be the most luxurious dinner for 2 you will ever have . We got our meal for $150 USD but it’s advertised at $250USD and was worth every penny. The experience was beautiful and so romantic. Now this is where my only criticism comes in. to get $100USD off and the meal and spa vouchers you will need to go to the lobby on you first day where a lovely member of staff will try and talk you into attending a "time share" walk around which will gain you a free meal on the beech. I felt they were very pushy with this and had to step in and make my feelings clear that i was there to relax not to feel pressured and stressed. After i was very firm i got the vouchers and walked away quite happily.

We ate in every restaurant except French and they were all amazing especially my favourite the Italian. (Gordon Ramsey eat your heart out). The pools are stunning although you do need to get there early to grab a good spot. The bar staff will come around to you and offer you drinks etc. you don’t have to tip but I would advise tipping $1 every other drink. This will also make sure they keep coming back : )

The entertainment is gold class and the team are so lively and full of energy. Each night there will be some form of entertainment / show and each one we went to was brilliant.

I don’t want to give too much away as you are obviously seriously considering going. My advice is GO and i guarantee you will love it. I am already looking at my next stay but i might try a different secrets location

We stayed at Secrets Maroma for our honeymoon in May 2013. The hotel staff is remarkable. The employees are extremely friendly and helpful. They will go out of their way to do anything to make your stay more enjoyable. Tips are not expected but HIGHLY appreciated. We gave the bartenders, waiters, and cleaning staff tips and they were very thankful and of course, gave even better attention to detail-- if possible. The hotel is VERY clean inside and out. They are constantly making sure everything is immaculate. They have great selection of restaurants- no waiting and no wristbands. The only restaurant you need reservations for is the Japanese restaurant if you want to sit at the Hibachi grills. They have an entertainment staff which encourages guests to play sports games and socialize. They are hilarious!!!!!!! Great shows at night. They have one lounge which seemed to be a little empty at night however, my husband and I still had fun with the good music.
