We were there for a week arriving on May 26th. It is by far the most woderful trip we have made. Service was just excellent, food was great in all of the restaurants, did not have to wait too long for our food and great quality, all à la carte without reservation restaurants at night. We had gone to Leblanc-Cancun and this matches the quality of the Leblanc.

We politely declined meeting for the timsharing meeting and they politely accepted our refusal.

The beach is by far one of the top beaches in the world, perfect sand, clean and even with the rain we had over the week they kept serving full drinks and even food on the beach.
Non of the staff is expecting any tips, which I gave only when they went over the top for us. We had a beach front room, which was great and our concierge even upgraded us, without us asking, to the honeymoon suite for the last day.
Don't mind the comments about the flood and mud in some swim up pool. I was there for the big tropical storm, had a few discussion with the staff and the last time they has seen such a big storm was once last year, and the previous time in 2005. So yes, there was water over each area where there is grass ( like 1 feet) and on the road to get out to the main road, but this is exceptionnal and should not effect your decision to stay. Even on the main road in between Playa Del Carmen and Cancun, there was flood.
Rooms: Great, clean, mini bar included even room service, quiet, well just perfect!
Would definitely go back again and would recommend Secrets to anyone.

Ok... this review is simple. Nothing fancy.

Was just there last week and there was a big rain storm...
the entrance to the resort was flooded and could not drive up the driveway. Had to leave our rental car out by the entrance and then wait for their SUV to come get us so we could check in. Even when they did pick us up the suburban was almost underwater as well.

Swim up rooms? more like swim up mud bath. Rooms flooded because of the rain and all the mud from surrounding plants filled pools to rooms.

Food was mediocre... Food at Asian restaurant was bad.
Italian and French restaurant was mildly acceptable.
Brunch at World Cafe was fine, nothing fancy.
Seaside Restaurant had the best food in the resort.

Maybe it was the rain, that made it a bad stay. But for what you are paying to stay there, it should amazing.

If we come back to the area, will definitely not stay here again.

We just stayed at this resort for 5 days with another couple. At check-in, we requested that our rooms be close to each other. This request was not accomodated and we were told that the resort is not that big. We were no where close to each other. "The mini bar in the room is re-stocked everyday" - well, only after you call and request it and you may have to call twice. We were on the 3rd floor of our building and the elevator only worked 1 day so climbing the stairs got really old.
THE MUSIC!! It was just awful. It would be nice in the spa or trying to nap but not out by the pool or at the bar in the middle of the day. There was no upbeat music at all!! Another couple that we met while there brought a Ipod and speaker to the bar. The music was not loud and all there seemed to be enjoying it. Within about 20 minutes, an employee quickly and not too politely told them they had to turn it off that it was not allowed.
THE ENTERTAINMENT!! BORING!!! Except for the Elvis impersonator. He was actually very good and quite funny. There is basically no entertainment during the day around the pool or even at the pool bar.
I have been to a number of all inclusive resorts and I have always been able to order a bottle of champagne with room service for mimosas. NOT HERE! They wanted to charge me $25.00.
THE FOOD!! The breakfast buffett was okay and had a nice variety. The lunch buffett was just terrible which only left one restaurant for lunch unless you wanted a half cooked hamburger from the grill. Dinner was good but very very small portions. The French and Italian restaurants were excellent.
I have stayed at Excellence Resorts in the past and am kicking myself for not sticking to them in Riviera Maya. I will not be staying at Secrets anymore.

We were staying down the road with another couple at Valentin, and our friends were getting married at Secrets Maroma. The travel agent for our friends mentioned that we might have to pay a fee to enter the resort for the wedding, but we just couldn't conceive that this would be the case given the fact that our friends were already paying a fee for the wedding services and food, and we were not there to use any of the hotel facilities, only to attend the wedding and reception. However, when we arrived, there was someone from the hotel there waiting for us, ready to charge us $100 EACH...what??? Yes, the 4 of us ended up having to pay $400 total to attend a wedding for which the bride and groom already paid. We shared our thoughts on how unethical this is with a manager, but he simply said this is the policy of the owners and that there was nothing he could do and that he would be happy for us to post a poor review on TripAdvisor. We dearly wanted to be a part of our friends' big day, but for us, it was not financially possible to stay at Secrets Maroma, so we stayed at a more affordable resort close by. We weren't going to NOT pay the fee and miss the wedding after we made the trip down for the big day. Secrets Maroma really takes advantage of guests and of the bride and groom. What's more, it started to rain after the ceremony, and it took the hotel staff almost 2 hours to move tables inside. This threw off the timing of everything. The bride and groom were cutting the cake as we were eating appetizers, first dance during first course, and then we had about 10 minutes to dance before the hotel made us stop the music, even though it was their fault that everything was delayed 2 hours....I would NEVER plan a wedding at this resort. Very very poor.

We just returned home from an eight-day stay at this all-inclusive. The property was very nice (there are a few rough edges here and there if you look) as was the staff (our concierge, Roberto, went above and beyond) and the food was very good too (we liked Oceana, one of the two less formal restaurants near the beach) the best - great grilled fresh fish. There was a massive tropical rainstorm while we were there and because the road in to the resort from the highway (2 miles long or so) is not paved (they have begun laying down cobblestones near the highway),and because there are no ditches or sewers or the like, the road became so flooded that it was essentially impossible to leave the resort for a full day. CAUTION: If you stay in a "preferred" room expect to be aggressively solicited to purchase "ownership" which is more or less akin to a time share. Regrettably, we agreed to attend the presentation. Ultimately, after spending 3+ hours in the process, we were asked to buy an ownership for close to $70k. They were admittedly plenty flexible and negotiable and we actually came to an agreement in terms. We then went to the beach for an hour and came back to sign the contract. We did not sign the contract for multiple reasons you need to be aware of. First, even though AMR Resorts owns Secrets, Dreams, etc., the party we were asked to contract with was "GBS International," a company we had never heard of and a company based in Anguilla (AMR Resorts is based in Pennsylvania). Second, in the contract, GBS Int'l was identified as a "mediator" which really meant that they would have facilitated connecting us to resorts, etc. had we signed. Third (IMPORTANT), the contract included waiving ALL POSSIBLE claims against the mediator, and then went on to also waive ALL POSSIBLE claims against the "suppliers" (AMR and anyone else that would have been required to provide us with service under the contract. THAT'S RIGHT, PER THIS CONTRACT ONE HAS NO REMEDY WHATSOEVER (I should note that the contract does address litigation - if suit is filed it must be filed only in the Domincan Republic ?!?!).

Room Tip: Building 27 is ocean front and provdes a beautiful view from second or third floor.

The resort is a fantastic resort once you get over the long and uneven road to the main entrance of the hotel. You are greeted by friendly and helpful bell staff, immediately followed by the excellent front desk.

We had booked a swim out room but in all honesty don't waste your money - whilst room was lovely you are likely to become a mosquito target immediately and the swim out area is nothing special. We changed to a penthouse suite and it was amazing with private sun deck and views out over the ocean.

The staff at this resort are excellent -we had the worst rain I have ever witnessed yet they still managed to make the resort safe, clean and enjoyable.

The food is excellent even the French which we felt was the least enjoyable during our 12 night stay. The Asian is excellent and we highly recommend as we ate here 3 times!

Where the hotel lets you down is when it comes to replenishing items in your room such as shampoo, coffee cups, glassware etc. We had no shower gel until we took from spa and regularly had to take shampoo from the trolley after our room had been cleaned no fresh coffee cups at all. Trivial I know but 5 star resorts make this happen here it did not in the 12 days we were there.

Overall an excellent resort with great staff, foodand drink. Would we return in the future - yes but we hope they sort out the room servicing issues.

After exhaustive research, my wife and I went with Secrets Maroma for our week-long trip to the Yucatán Peninsula mostly because of the great reviews here on TripAdvisor. It didn't disappoint.

The food. It's great. We enjoyed every one of the restaurants -- some of our best meals were the Veal Chop at the French Restaurant, the Lamb Chop at the Italian Restaurant, most things at the Mexican restaurant, and the Salmon at the seafood grill. We like our proteins cooked rare, and the chefs nailed it every time. So, this rumor that the food is "pre-cooked" is absolutely false. Unlike most people, we didn't dig the hibachi. I recommend paying to order a bottle of wine off the list at least once -- the house wine is okay, but it gets a little tedious after a week.

The room. We paid for the upgraded swim-out room. The room was really nice, but the swim out part wasn't that great. I kind of expected to be able to "swim out" to somewhere, but these pools run between the rooms in your building. So, you can swim back and forth in front of other people's rooms / porches, which becomes creepy real fast. We did like the room extras, like the sparkling wine, incense, DVD, and pass-through room service door. Never used the in-room Jacuzzi (who does?).

Activities. Here's where I think Secrets Maroma separates itself from the competition. The activities are amazing, and the activity staff is almost impossibly enthusiastic. My wife wanted to veg-out on the beach, but I like having things to do. I could take little breaks from the relaxing to hit the batting cages, ride bikes, and play beach volleyball. Didn't have time, but wanted to do the sea kayaking, sea dancing, and beach soccer. The activities were super fun and well organized / executed. Most other places I've been, they have a beach volleyball net set up, but no one plays. At Secrets, there are always 2 organized games per day. The evening shows were fun and didn't take themselves too seriously.

The scene. I really enjoyed the vibe at Secrets Maroma. The people at the beach were young and fit, the pool was more of the party scene, and people dress up for dinner in the main restaurants. My wife and I are in our mid-40s, but we relate better to the younger set and felt right at home.

Location. Maroma beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and is even nice for the Yucatán, but it is isolated. Getting a cab to Playa is $50 round trip, and our excursion required a surcharge because we were so far away from everything. If you don't plan on leaving the property, it's perfect, but you are in the middle of no where.

Misc stuff. If you have access to the premium club, make sure to ask about the top-shelf options (they literally hide the best bottles -- aged whiskey, tequila -- behind lesser bottles). Stay in one night and watch a DVD -- the options are lame, but it was fun to stay in one night. Organize your excursion separately -- Secrets does not offer the best price or options at the property (I recommend Adventours). Schedule your massage for an hour after you want it because they make you come an hour early for the hydro-therapy.
