We have just got back from our honeymoon - half of which was at secrets Maroma Beach - it beat all of our expectations. We are from the UK and booked via Virgin Holidays (don't forget to ask for an NHS employee discount if booking with them) the virgin team recommended the resort as it is popular with American visitors so standards are kept very high (as opposed to the hotels/chains that are usually more well known with Europeans such as Iberostar and Barcelo). We were not disappointed - there were lots of extras for honeymooners and it was perfect from start to finish. Immaculately clean and friendly. The beach is stunning - little fish swimming about - water sports all included. It is not a 'mega resort' so it feels much more personal and you get to know people.

The food was excellent - in the evening there is no buffet- all 7 restaurants are al la carte and of excellent quality. We didn't go to the Asian or french restaurant as we live in London so we have these as regular options when at home. The Mexican restaurant El Patio was lovely. The World Cafe is worth a visit too - 4 courses - each of which perfect. Breakfast and lunch options good and varied. Also if you arrive late or are tired at the end of the day room service is also included! You could have breakfast and dinner in your room every day if you wanted!

The entertainment was great - the entertainment team are not pushy but are around all the time with activities to do if you want. The shows in the evening are of a good quality (a couple of cocktails first and they seem even better!) There were a few moments where you felt you were at Kellerman's and there was a slight holiday camp feel - but only very momentary - the Scottish bloke who won the karaoke reached almost celebrity status for the rest of the week!

The only very slight negative (and to be honest this is very slight) is that despite having a 50% DEET containing insect repellant we still got bitten by Mosquitos every night. The room service team leave the room doors open while they are cleaning your room and so we assume that's how they got in. But that really is the only negative.

We did not pay the extra for the 'preferred club' rooms - from what people Said who were in them the only extra worth having was the better view - although they got extra cafes and snacks most said they were using the main areas anyway - so may not be worth the money.

So book and enjoy! You will never want to go anywhere else again.

Just returned from 9 nights at Secrets Maroma. A really fabulous resort. Had room no 1710 which was standard size ocean front swim up and in our opinion best location in the resort. Patio had sun until about 2 pm and then we headed to the beach. Our pool was shared by just 5 rooms and no one in the other rooms used it so felt very private. Well worth the swim up if you are preferred ocean front as great location, big patio and 2 sun loungers. If you do not get ocean front do not take a swim up room as they only have 1 sunlounger and the patio area really small! Beach Kabana was well worth the $40 for the day - I would do this instead of swim up. We had one of the 2 storey ones which we loved. The entire staff were marvellous and service faultless. They had set up tables in the evening around the pool which were very romantic and private - you could have one if you ordered a bottle of wine! Much cheaper option than romantic dinner as the wine is from $30. Preferred club in my opinion had only one benefit which was the better located rooms. WIFI is free in all rooms now and Preferred club lounge really lacks atmosphere so really could not see the benefits. Would recommend this resort and will go back again.

Room Tip: Room 1710 is ocean front and very private. Any room in block 17 would be good.

This was our second trip to maroma and it was wonderful. When you go request building 24 so you can have the best Concierge. Our concierge's name was Jean and he was fabulous. He was able to get us a cabana twice at the last minute. Another standout was Antonio, the manager at World Cafe. Antonio planned a special dinner for us and his chef(s) did an excellent job, their food and service were extraordinary. In order for the trip to be perfect stay away from the vacation club sales pitch, they say it is 90 minutes but it was 4 hours. If you avoid the vacation club people you will have a perfect trip.

Room Tip: Ask for Concierge Jean!

Just back (19th) from two fantastic weeks at this resort. The near 15 hours travelling from the uk could have been better, but it was worth it. From the check in to check out everything was first class. The employees were always smiling and friendly. The rooms were spotless, sometimes cleaned twice a day. The pool, beach and grounds were immaculate. The food was faultless, even the buffet had so much choice. Our favourite was the Asian restaurant and the most friendly of waiters there was Pedro, who sorted out a special menu for our last night which was not asked for but was fantastic. The lobby bar of an evening was staffed by three of the friendliest barmen i,ve ever met, and i,ve met a lot, so thanks go to Elesandro, Santiago and Angel and also the waitresses, especially Lidia. And last but not least our concierge, Yanine, who was always available with a smile and assistance.

Couple of downsides. First is a major one, imo . Why do the management insist on having staff pounce on guests as soon as they check in? Please be aware that these staff are solely there to mislead you into attending a sales pitch for timeshare. If your not bothered, then the (presentation) lasts for ninety minutes, but is quite intense, we were actually advised to "stick it on your credit card" and worry about it later! If you can afford it, great, but PLEASE management, stop this.
Second, its not as peaceful as it could be as there tends to be a lot of groups/ conventions that tend to congregate around the pool area. not too bad as they tend to get that drunk that they aren't about in the evening, anyway there are lots of quiet areas and the beach is far enough away.

All in all, my wife and I loved it here and would recommend to anyone.

Management, PLEASE STOP THE SALES PITCH.

Room Tip: Higher rooms = less mosquitoes, noise and a better view.

The "entertainment team" spoiled my vacation. There is a group of people that come on the beach and by the pool yelling "beach volleyball" or "kayak race" for about 15 min before the event. Then every other day the entertainment team brings a big speaker and sets it on the beach for water aerobics that lasts 45 minutes. You cannot nap at the pool or beach or hear the waves because of the yelling. While my husband and I do not drink, we have gone to Valentine Imperial and Spa Adventura and never had this problem. It was a drunk fest but it was not the drunks that were the problem. They advertise 13 pools but there is only one pool area. The hammocks are in the same pool area. There is no where on the property to get away from the loud noise and the yelling. Most of these type resorts have another pool that is quieter or at least some of the outside beds in a quiet part of the property.

The rooms are really nice. We stayed in a penthouse room that had an outside bathtub that we enjoyed. The customer service is below average. The first night we were asleep at 10:00 p.m. and the house keeping tried to come in to turn down our bed. We had locked the door so she couldn't get in but she tried three times by slamming the door open. We talked to security to see who was trying to come in our room and they did verify that it was housekeeping. Then the next day we came in for a nap at 2:00 and our room had not been cleaned so I turned on the do not disturb light so they would not wake us. They called while we were sleeping and asked if we wanted our room cleaned. That happened twice. I do not see the point of the light if they are going to call and wake us up. We love coffee and were excited about the espresso machine in the room but getting the coffee was a chore. They do not refill the coffee when they clean your room so each day you have to call and ask for some. They came three out of five days with us calling once and sometimes twice each time. My thought is ...don't put the machines in our room and then make it a chore to get the coffee. If it is that valuable then just remove the machine. You also have to call separately for incense and bug wipes.

The beach was the best I have seen in Mexico but nothing to see if you like to snorkel. They serve drinks and food on the beach which was nice but doesn't make up for the entertainment team yelling "beach volleyball". There was no chance to relax because of the staff. The people playing beach volleyball were not the issue (even the really drunk people).

I thought the chocolate shop was going to be fun. It was not, you can only get desserts between 400 and 600. If you asked for it at any other time the staff simply says "finished". Who wants chocolate before you eat dinner. The coffee was good from the shop.
I read the reviews about the food and expected something great. It was the same food that the other resorts have. We have stayed at the Rose Hall in Jamacia, Sandals in St Lucia, Galley Bay in Antigua, and two all inclusives in Mexico and it seemed about the same to me. I do not mind because I do not expect food out of the country to be the same as some good Tennessee cooking. The only place I had great food was a LaLuna in Grenada.

I hate to be the only negative review but I am telling the truth if you do not want a rowdy drunk fest then do not go here. We make a joke that the two people on the key card laying on the beach in a restful state were really just passed out. There was not relaxing on that beach. It was like Panama City Beach in Florida, jet skis, speed boats, people doing water sports, people hooping and boats right along the swimming edge.

Flying back from a wonderful week-long vacation at Secrets Maroma. I have nothing but good things to say about the resort and the people who work there. Our days consisted of getting up, hitting the gym (which was big enough, as long as you got there somewhat early), and then to World Cafe for buffet breakfast. Breakfast included omelet station, crepe station, smoothies, and lots of other options (including lots of mexican food which seemed like they shouldn't be eaten at 9am). We would then head out to the pool area to spend the day. This is when the real fun would begin. There was always a full schedule of activities throughout the day. We would play beach volleyball at 11, followed up by pool volleyball at noon. The activities were run by the "Excellente" entertainment staff. This group of guys (and one girl) really made the entire trip for us. They were all great, energetic people that let you know what was going on and encouraged you to participate in the events. Manuel (aka Bambi) and Alfredo (The Mexican Harry Potter) were our favorites, as they were so genuine and fun to be around that you felt like you were hanging out with friends. The rest of the crew (Ferminator, Donny Osmond, Sasquatch, Manny, Mexican Chocolate, and the others) were also a lot of fun.

Lunch was either chips, guacamole, fajita, and grill items by the pool, a buffet, or the Seaside grill. I would recommend rotating between all three options for variety. Afterwards, there would be other activities if you wanted (mini golf, ping pong, archery, tequila tasting, the crazy game) or pool/beach if you didn't. It was never an issue to find seats around the pool and there were friendly servers who would walk around and bring you drinks. A couple days we got a cabana on the beach. It was a covered hut with sheets on the sides and a mattress with pillows. It was a good option to be on the beach but avoid the sun (it was very hot all week long with only about 10 minutes of rain on one day). Eduardo was always walking around to make sure you were doing well and would cheerfully bring you anything you needed. We would even get food delivered right to the beach (although it would take a while so you should allow some extra time). It was $40 a day for this, so not worth doing every day (especially since there are plenty of other places to sit and food/drink service everywhere), but it was fun to do at least once. There are some that have a top level as well if you want the option of being in the sun.

Dinners were consistently good and the servers were all very efficient and friendly. They only take reservations at the hibachi (which was good food, but not the most skilled chef I've seen.. the lady flung her spatula and knocked someone's water glass over), but we didn't really have any issue walking in and eating whenever we wanted. The one exception was the French restaurant Bordeaux. We tried to go there the last night, but didn't want to wait for 30 minutes since we wanted to attend a show. We liked the Italian restaurant and ate there twice, but World, Seaside, and Porto Tino were all quite good. One night there was a Mexican fiesta outside which was also worth going to. If you like eating outside, I would highly recommend bringing bug spray as there were quite a few bugs that would bite.

For any of you not great at escaping reality while on vacation, there is WiFi throughout the resort. It works quite well in the lobby and rooms, and even reached to the pool area and some of the closer areas on the beach (including the cabanas). It seemed to temporarily disconnect quite a bit, but it was certainly sufficient to stay connected and check email.

We attended several of the shows at night. The Urban show was really awesome. There were breakdancers and this guy who did a crazy beat-box thing with his voice. The Secrets Idol show was entertaining (but will depend on the contestants on any given night), and the Rock Show was fun and good music. After the Mexican fiesta was an outdoor fireshow which was entertaining. The one show I did not like at all was the Mayan one on our last night, so I would recommend finding something else to do (pool, ping pong, darts in the sports bar, hanging out in the lobby, etc.). If you like dancing, there was always something going on in the disco after the show. The entertainment staff was there late into the night (and still as energetic as ever) to keep the party going.

I only have one complaint, and it is in regards to Apple Vacations, which is the travel agent we booked with. We were supposed to receive a $400 room credit, which we were planning on putting towards a massage, dinner on the beach, and the beach cabanas. However, when we got there, we found out that they were actually several different vouchers that could only be used in a certain way. You could get $10 off a bottle of wine (which ranged from $40 to $300), $40 off certain spa services, or $20 off beach dinners (which were $150-$200). So, all in all we actually used only $40 of our $400 credit, and still ended up needing to pay about $300 plus gratuity for a couples massage. The spa was very nice, but it seemed expensive, especially when I originally expected it would be free. I felt this was extremely false advertising and I wasn't happy with how it was presented. I didn't factor this into my overall rating, since this seems to be an issue with Apple Vacations, and not the resort specifically. However, I felt it was worth noting. Apple seemed to handle everything else well (airport transfers, the one trip we took which was a ride into Playa Del Carmen, airline tickets, etc.).

So in conclusion, I would highly recommend this resort. The facilities have everything you need (gym, pool, beach, ping pong, billiards, batting cage, basketball, tennis, putt putt, etc.), the food was quality (not the best I've ever had on vacation, but we were satisfied at all our meals), the service was friendly, and above all the entertainment staff was fabulous.

Room Tip: If you want a swim out pool from your room, get one on the ground floor. Otherwise, it seems like th...

This is hands down, the best resort I've ever been to! My husband and I were married there just last week and had about 20+ guests come with us.
The Beach is PERFECT, no seaweed, clear water, powdery white sand that barely even gets warm let alone hot, and if you go out about hip deep you will be surrounded by what I think are white angelfish :-)
The Rooms are very nice, the beds and pillows are soft enough for a good night's sleep, no issues with hot water nor water pressure... the preferred rooms are the only ones with a decent view of the water. our 'ocean view' was a view of some distant water over the trees. The preferred rooms don't have much else worth the extra expense other than the better view though.
The Food was excellent! My favorites in order were: Italian, Our private reception dinner from the silver menu, French, Steak, Fish, Mexican... The Mexican wasn't great but everything else was amazing! The buffet, World Cafe, is open for breakfast and has everything you could ever dream of wanting! No reservations are required for dinner and unless the resort is booked solid, there aren't any issues with getting into wherever you want to eat.
The Service was perfect! You are on vacation, you don't carry your own luggage and if you try to from room to room, someone will stop and help you. There is a concierge in every single building to help you with whatever you need so you don't have to go all the way up to the lobby. Our concierge was wonderful and so amazingly friendly all the time! The whole staff will greet you with a smile and a greeting in English, no matter what their normal job is. Even if they aren't all happy 100% of the time, they sure seem like they are with all their smiles!
We separated from our family and friends for some privacy to another resort (ERC) which in it's own right is a great resort, BUT, everything was just a step below Secrets.. the quality of food, the strength of the drinks, the service, the water and beach full of seaweed, etc. Again, a very nice place that just wasn't quite as incredible as Secrets. If you're debating between another place and Secrets, I HIGHLY recommend Secrets! I've never written a review before, but I couldn't help myself in sharing my views of this place :-)

Room Tip: Preferred rooms are the only ones with a decent view of the water or beach, but the other preferred...
