Last August, my husband surprised me with a trip to Playa del Carmen - Secrets Maroma for our anniversary for 8 days and 7 nights. This trumped our original honeymoon in Cozumel! I had such a wonderful time at Secrets, I want to go back just to visit the wonderful people we met and relax on the beautiful beaches. We took time to island hop between Isla Mujeres and Contoy as well as visit the heart of Playa. Amazing! The food was great at every restaurant, room (top floor, ocean view), was excellent, and service was outstanding!!

A big thank you to the following people who made our trip worthwhile: Citaly, Martha, Lucio (server), Gretel (hostess), Denisse, Rosanna, Raimundo (concierge), Felix (server), Frederick, Sergio, Jean (front desk), Leslie, Ismael, Reina, Manuel (Bambi), Monica, and Daniel. A special thank you to Joaquin (doorman) and Alfredo who went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. We hope to see you all again soon!

Room Tip: Ocean view is a must. But I don't believe there are any rooms above the 2nd floor that don'...

My wife and I stayed at Secrets Maroma Beach for 5 days at the beginning of March. We've been to several different resorts in the Riviera Maya and found this to be one of the best.

We stayed in the Preferred Club and had a swim-up room. I'm not sure if the Preferred Club is worth the extra money. The buildings closest to the ocean were all Preferred Club and you got access to the Preferred Club itself with private check-in, a bar, and an area where a continental breakfast was served in the morning and appetizers in the afternoon. Since we've never stayed in a non-Preferred Club room, I don't have anything to compare it to. The only difference I could see is that you may stay in a building further from the ocean and you would have to check in at the main lobby rather than the Preferred Club.

Our room was on the ground floor but despite this, the room was still very private thanks to the landscaping. If you are looking for a view of the ocean, don't get the swim-up. I believe the ocean would be clearly visible from any room, whether it is billed as ocean-front or not. The resort isn't extremely big and the buildings are arranged in a horshoe shape that gives them all view of the ocean, assuming you are on the upper floors.

The water in the swim-up pool was relatively warm and was in the sun about half the day. Our room was nicely decorated and the bed was comfortable. Housekeeping was extremely unobtrusive and made up the room at least twice a day. We used the mini-bar frequently and it was re-stocked every day. Except for the occasional noise in the passageway outside the doorway, we never heard any other noise in our room.

A nice feature is the "secret compartment" that allows room service to be delivered without letting the waiter in the room. A "do not disturb" light is controlled by a switch on the inside of the room. When the light is on, room service is simply left in the pass-through compartment immediately adjacement to the door. This worked nice in the mornings when my wife and I would go to work out in the gym (the gym was fine, nothing special). Before we left each morning, we ordered breakfast and left on the "do not disturb" light. When we got back from working out, our breakfast was waiting for us in the compartment.

The main pool is a fun and active area. I thought the pool itself was a bit on the cool side but we heard they got a lot of rain the night before we arrived so that I supect is why that was the case. There are plenty of lounge chairs around the pool and floats available to lounge in the pool. I didn't see a lot of people being chair hogs or trying to reserve chairs for long periods of time. The pool staff was fairly active in picking up abandoned towels both around the pool and on the beach. There were plenty of umbrellas around the pool and shade huts on the beach to escape underneath when we needed a break from the.

Maroma beach is the best beach we've ever visited, and we've seen quite a few around the Caribbean. We stayed at another resort on Maroma beach twice previously so knew what to expect. The sand is soft white sand and the ocean looks literally like a postcard. There were plenty of chairs either in shade or in the sun and a full staff of beach waiters. The waiters were hard-working and brought refills most of the time before we even asked.

We had lunch at the poolside restuarant twice. The food and service were great. We also ate lunch at the poolside grill. There were lots of great options ranging from pizza and burgers to fresh fish and salad. It looked like more than a few people had their lunch brought to them on the beach.

The dinner restaurants were awesome. I thought the food was gourmet and better than the food in any other all-inclusive we've visited over the past several years. We ate at the French restuarant, which we liked the best, the Italian resturant, Mexican restaurant and Japanese restuarant. We sat on the patio at the Italian restaurant and had painfully slow service. But our experience was the opposite at the other places so I assume it was just a fluke. The portions in each of the restaurant were not overwhelming so we didn't feel like pigs enjoying an appetizer or two as well as dessert. During peak times (7-7:30 or so) there was a wait but you could take a pager and have a drink in the bar.

The bottom line is we really enjoyed the resort and wouldn't hesitate to return or recommend it to others.

Room Tip: I don't think the swim-up room was worth the extra cost.

The resort is good. Food is good, beach is good.
Unfortunately, by the end of the stay, we were cheated.
Bought their vacation club membership.
The discounts offered by vacation clubs sound appealing.
But before you sign up, check out if you will have any real savings.
When we looked at the staton on the market, it became cear that 25% dscount offered is not enoug to compete with the packages offered by the travel agencies.
We paid $7000 for sham membership that is essentially worthless

Wow. We had just spent a disappointing week in Cuba and were delighted when we arrived here. This place is top notch with nothing to fault it.

Everything from the rooms to the beach and the food and the staff is all five star.

We cant wait to come back.

Room Tip: The Junior suite is a good option, well worth the extra.

My wife and I, with a party of five close friends, have recently returned from a 14 night holiday to this resort. As a group, we have cruised in the Caribbean visiting a number ports of call in Mexico but we had desire to try a land based holiday in Mexico and chose the Yucatan peninsular as the best option. The hotel was chosen by our group following much discussion and research on the accommodation options in the area. The very positive reviews on trip advisor and the fact it is an adults only resort was the 'clincher'.
Note that this review is the personal opinion of my wife and I, and not that of the group as a whole.
Following a long flight to Cancun we were pleased with the speed in which we were processed through immigration. The only problem we experienced was caused by Virgin Atlantic in the availability of immigration forms on the flight which led to a number of passengers being kept on board the flight for almost an hour whilst the issue was dealt with. Fortunately for our party we had completed our forms during the flight and as a result were not inconvenienced.
We had arranged a private taxi transfer to the hotel and arrived a half an hour after setting off from the airport. On arrival at Secrets Maroma we were given a cool towel and whisked away to the Prefered Club Lounge, by golf cart, to complete the registration procedure. At this point we had a problem with one of our party, a single lady, who was to be accommodated in another building some distance from the rest of us. This was totally unacceptable as we were travelling as a group of friends who wanted to be located near one another. Following much discussion and a final acceptance by the registration staff of the unsuitability of the proposed arrangements, it was finally agreed that she would be moved into our accommodation block within two days. NOT A GREAT START TO OUR HOLIDAY !.
Our room was in accommodation block 27 room 2722 and was a Prefered Club Oceanfront Junior Suite. It was of adequate size and kept very clean each day by our maid. The bed was very large and equally comfortable. The room was provided with everything you would require including little things like toothpaste and Suncream. Each block had a Concierge to look after us and ours was named Cesar. He was very helpful and always sought to ensure we were enjoying ourselves.
This hotel is located on a beautiful beach and has plenty of sun loungers and a number of Cabanas for rent. The beach service was excellent although we did tip a number of times to ensure this continued. The pool area again was well provided with loungers and shades and as the beach area was well served by the pool and waiter staff. Good toilet facilities and plenty of drinks available either at your lounger or indeed the pool bar.
The all inclusive arrangement was particularly good for our party with the restaurants were in the main very good. Our favourite evening restaurant was Portofino, and we ate there on three occasions. Brilliant Puttanesca pasta dish and excellent Spagetti Bolognese are highly recommended. Our main issue with the restaurants was that securing a table for seven people was very difficult. On a few occasions we had to seek either the assistance of our Concierge or Prefered club manager to assist in securing a suitable table at a sensible time!. We could not fault the restaurant staff but the system they have to work with is not helpful to larger parties. Apparently you cannot book a table a day or two in advance and had this facility been available it would have certainly benefited us. SECRETS MAROMA PLEASE NOTE !.
The preferred Club lounge was used a number of times, Bombay Safire gin and Disaronno (personal favourites) were just some top line drinks being available. We also used the club for breakfast on a couple of occasions when we only wanted something light. A real find for us was the coffee lounge in the main building which also served proper HOT tea and nice cakes.
The entertainment was a bit hit or miss for us as I think the target audience, quite understandably, was mainly from the USA. However we did enjoy the Elvis and Beatles tribute with the Sensual dance routine being very good. The entertainment staff worked hard to please everyone.
My overall impression of the hotel was very positive and I think that was strongly influenced by the attitude of the staff which was very efficient with the service being delivered with what I believe was a genuine smile. The all inclusive set up was very good with a very good food and drinks package. The lovely sunny weather and warm seas always helps though !.
Would we return to this hotel ?. We would consider it strongly if we returned to this area, but there are so many other places we have not visited yet.

Room Tip: Arrange private transfer if it fits your budget.

We visited Secrets at the end of January, and had organized a group of 18 friends to celebrate 2 50th birthdays. We had been to Secrets 2 years prior and had loved it!
The staff is lovely, polite and helpful. Always smiling, and trying to please.
The food was also very good. We liked the Italian restaurant quite a lot, and the grilled shrimp, fish and ceviche at the pool restaurant was wonderful. We loved breakfast, and found favorites there each day.
We were in a Preferred suite facing the beach, and it was heavenly. It was our second time staying in the Preferred suite, and I honestly thought our friends rooms, vs the suites, which were swim up rooms near the Preferred Club were just great too.
The preferred club is a nice refuge form the resort, and the check in experience there was nicer than in the main lobby..."would you like some sparkling wine?" Um, yes please!
We never once we approached by timeshare sales people...maybe we never ventured into the lobby at the right/wrong time.?

Our only issues were with dinners. We had planned for 6 months in advance, and never once had been told that we would not be able to sit either together or near each other. The manager accommodated us by saving us 2 tables at the outdoor Mexican night...which was nice, however, not much of a stretch as the event was set up with table tops of 10 anyway, so they didn't go out of their way to ever accommodate our large group.

Each night we would meet for drinks, get our buzzers from different restaurants, and wait for tables...sometimes 2 hours. When we asked for a table for 8, it never could be arranged...even if the table next to us was empty! They would sit us at 4-top tables, and we would wait 15 minutes apart.
Our takeaway was that either they were understaffed in the restaurants, and could not serve 8 at the same time...odd because the pool was staffed well...OR, they were trying to promote a quieter dining experience.
We made it work for us, but it would make me think twice about going with a large group. We saw a wedding group often when we were there...not sure how the dining arrangement worked for them.
The only other critique...at a place this high-end, where you can order Grey Goose and Ketel vodkas if you ask for them, the wine list of house wines really needs to be improved. It was ridiculous that their house wines were so poor. It really doesn't cost much more for them to find some decent mid-range wines to offer.
My massage was so great at the Spa that I went back for another! Yes it was expensive, but boy, it was great!
Other than that the service and experience was lovely, and our group had a great time. We hope to return to this Secrets, or try another.

Room Tip: Preferred club is nice..the second floor and up suites facing the ocean are the only ones that see t...
