I am kind of sorry to see Bet's on TA since I thought it a hidden treasure. Bet's is the "Best". The minimally coated, quick fried, fresh haddock is outstanding. The half order is not really a half , but half a fish, sweet, tender, and flaky. I think about it and anticipate getting back there every year. We usually are in the area in September, but this year we will be in Boothbay in July. I hope Bet has time to joke around with us this year.

Bet's motto is do one thing and d it well. She fries fish and potatoes. The fish is the freshest haddock and the potatoes are hand cut french fries with a few hand cut potato chips in the mix, you can get a fish sandwich but the fish and chips is the real star here. I have a huge appetite and I can only finish her 1/2 sized fish and chips. The fish is the freshest, flakiest and most delicious haddock I've ever tasted. The fish is served from the counter of small building where the food is prepared, drinks are gotten from a vending machine. The place is pretty funky, with a mermaid motif and outdoor picnic tables for customers. Prices are very reasonable and the food is the bomb. Just down the road is the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens; a great day trip for adults and children, topped off by yummy food at Bet's...all without fighting the crowds in the main tourist crowds in the area. They are/wereclosed on Mondays and the hours are somewhat limited, so get there during the heat of the day. I don't know of a phone number but the address is Boothbay Common Boothbay Center, ME 04537 Try it, you WILL be glad you did.

This is an authentic Maine Fish-shack, with picnic table seating only. Bet is the owner and fries all of the fish, which she gets from the family fishing vessel. The only item on the menu is fried haddock, with or without french fries. You also have a choice of tarter sauce or her "Special Sauce" which is her own dill sauce. You can order fish and chips, a fish sandwich or a "Dish of Fish" which is just the fish, no bun, no fries. That is the way to go to enjoy the pure essence of fried haddock. The fries are not frozen fast food fries, but hand-cut, that day, from fresh potatoes. They taste great and the locals understand that they tend to get limp because they are not reconstituted or breaded like frozen fries, but tourists tend to complain about that. Bet is very busy, and works really hard in this hot little shack, standing over vats of hot fat. She has a great personality and sense of humor, and enjoys chatting with friends if she has a moment to spare. But she does not have time for those who don't know what they want to order. The menu is simple! Fish! Order up as soon as you get to the window! Cold drinks are available at the vending machine behind her shack. This is a cash only operation, and you will find most of the local outdoor workers grabbing a quick lunch here. Bet's is located right on the Boothbay Common, a lovely and typical New England town green. She is open from 11-2 for lunch and 5-7 for dinner. Beware of Thursdays in the summer, as the Farmer's Market is also on the common, and makes for a bigger crowd and difficult parking.
