It's a bit chilly in early October in Maine, but we decided to pile on some clothing and take a cruise anyway. I'm certainly glad we did!
We took the Kennebec River - Bath Cruise which was a 3 hour, 44 mile tour across Boothbay Harbor, up the Kennebec River to Bath and the Iron Works, past the historic Civil War era fort, and 6 or 7 lighthouses. We saw porpoises and seals in the harbor and 3 bald eagles along the river. The narration was easy to hear and was informative and funny. The route was a big loop, so unlike a lot of tours there was no backtracking, and traveling up the river there was always something to see and photograph on each side of the ship. The ship was clean and appears well-maintained. The captain handled it beautifully. I can't recommend this tour enough!

Watch watching at times can be hit or miss, however during our recent trip to Maine in Sept 2012 we hit a bonanza of whales and other mammals. The trip was about 3 ½ hours in duration, the boat was fine and the crew was fantastic. Up front they communicated to us if we didn’t see any whales that we would be given a free ticket to be used for another whale watch in the future (no expiration). The “naturalist” conducting the tour has very knowledgeable and helpful and we seen about 20-30 whales, sea otters and about 100+ harbor seals. Overall I would recommend this as we had a great time.

My boyfriend and I did the 11:30 whale watching tour on October 1. Unfortunatley, we did not get to see any whales (we did see some dolphins though) and although the crew was friendly, its a bad time to go in the fall. We did enjoy the trip 20 miles out into the ocean, but after 3.5 hours of seeing nothing but water it gets a little boring. They do serve snacks and beverages (along with great bloody marys) on the boat, but if you are taking this tour after Labor Day I suggest you take a book or magazine to kill some time with. We were told by some of the locals that after a certain time in the year (fall) your chances of seeing any whales goes way down. I wish that someone had told us and we might have been able to spend the time doing something else. I say this knowing that Cap'n Fish's has no control over the whales, I just want to let others be aware before they spend the time and money on a tour during the off season. Cap'n Fish's did give us a "rain-check" ticket because we didn't see any whales, however being from Oklahoma I doubt we will get the chance to use them.

My husband and I went on the whale watching trip. It was beautiful! Luckily we opted to sit in the front of the boat even though it was chilly outside but if we had not sat here we would not have seen the one whale that was spotted through the whole trip. It was an amazing site in the distance and we left even happier when they told us since only one whale was spotted we all got free stand by tickets that NEVER expire! What a great company!

Only saw a small whale, but the trip was beautiful, and were given tickets for a different trip good forever.
